buying fitted shirts changed my life

click here to start exploding (ledge), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:34 (six years ago) link

Is there a medium fit? I need to find something between wearing a balloon with a collar and wearing a corset.

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:35 (six years ago) link

Try different brands I guess? Some give chest/sleeve measurements as well as collar size.

Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:38 (six years ago) link

Maybe I just need a thinner neck!!

Jeff, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:39 (six years ago) link

if you want to be super anal you can get a measuring tape and take some basic measurements on the best-fitting shirt you have to compare to web sizing info (or be even crazier and bring your measuring tape to the store too). i've taken to doing this with things like leg openings on pants.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:05 (six years ago) link

i don't think that is super anal, i think that is just good sense. shopping online without knowing your preferred measurements is a complete crapshoot

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:09 (six years ago) link

SUPER anal is keeping your measurements in an evernote doc so you always have them available on your phone, not that i know anyone who does that

i bought a custom shirt from these dudes http://www.blacklapel.com have not recieved yet, will report back

the thing abt all the custom clothes sites is none of them really have the best style but we will see i feel like they should be able to handle a white dress shirt, itd b rad to be able to get some cool ass costom suits of the nets or w/e tho

i feel like custom / MTM shirt sites have become a huge trend in men's online retail in the past 5 years or so, there are SO MANY

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:47 (six years ago) link

yeah there are tons. do let us know about your experience w/blacklapel, jho.

i got a shirt made for my wedding at a mtm shirt tailor in boston (they basically follow the web model in that the sewing is done in hong kong, but someone measures you irl) and i was a little disappointed that the resulting shirt still had tons of billowing in the back when i tucked it in. kind of soured me on the cheap-ish mtm concept. i just bought an off the rack shirt from these guys - http://www.ledbury.com that fit me perfectly through the torso (which is kind of a big deal because i'm not a small guy and really don't need any fabric pooling near my waist).

unflattering photos but u get the drift

tailor can also have shirts darted if u really insist

idk i tend to buy 90% second-hand so maybe i'm just less demanding / go for a more classic silhouette

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:53 (six years ago) link

obvs weve gone pretty far toward things being super tight and fitted and im sure things will swing back the other way, like steven alan is selling 'tradiational fit suits' as we speak, but i think generally just having something that is m/l the right shape reguardless of whether its tight or loose is not too much to ask, i mean the thing abt the military tuck is its designed for a uniform which by definition is not tailored

Stylish people, help recommend me casual jackets!

For most of my adult life I've vacillated between hoodies, shirt jackets, parkas, and peacoats. A couple years back I picked up one of these Carhartt jackets

https://images.homedepot-static.com/productImages/7498fa23-15a0-4f3a-b39c-970604247d14/svn/canyon-brown-carhartt-work-jackets-101492-908-64_1000.jpg

which is comfortable, durable, protects against the elements, and fits well. However, I always feel like a park ranger while wearing it and there are a couple things that really get on my nerves (the zipper going all the way up and the angled cuffs on the sleeves).

Any suggestions for basic, stylish, durable jackets?

☮️ (peace, man), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 14:26 (three months ago) link

hoodie to shirt jacket to parka covers a wide range of conditions and temperatures!

are you just shopping for one jacket? if so, what temps and conditions do you want it to cover?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 15:27 (three months ago) link

I could be shopping for multiple jackets! I could turn into a real jacket fiend, for sure. Thinking about general fall/winter temps between 20s-40s.

I've tried to just search around for "jacket" and educate myself but this thread is so fucking huge that even though I'm able to get it to fully load, the ctrl-f function doesn't work properly.

I've always loved Barracuta G9 style jackets, def good if you want to make your look a little more "grown up," although they are def a bit old-mannish. Not sure if they're warm enough for your needs. Allen Edmonds has one of them on sale right now (although the green is not my thing), and a few other nice-looking jackets on sale as well.

i was gonna say a harrington g-9 type, i have this in beige https://jumpthegun.co.uk/category/harringtons-and-jackets/raglan-sleeve-harringtons/ and it's held up for a few years. def a Dad Jacket

adam, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:29 (three months ago) link

carhartt makes a ton of other casual jackets that don't look as "park ranger"

color choice makes a big difference too

marcos, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:35 (three months ago) link

man we're almost at 10,000 posts. maybe time for a part 2 to this thread.

the barracuta g9 is a fantastic jacket but its sweet spot is weather in the 40s to low 60s. for 20s to 40s (and if you're not planning on constantly being in driving rain and sleet) i like patagonia's lightweight down jackets.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:37 (three months ago) link

Always wanted one of those ribbed all-weather Rab jackets, even if they're not super-stylish and literally everyone wears one (or a knock-off version)

some sort of big parka is essential if u live where it gets to 20, northface pategonia somth like that u can get them on sale this time of year, ll bean etcs a lil cheaper, uniqulo even cheaper, or u cld go more menswear with norse projects apc etc, also worth looking into ebay etc for used stuff if youre gonna go w the outdoor brands since that shit lasts forever and often has a lifetime warrantee

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 17:50 (three months ago) link

FWIW I've been mostly wearing one of these since I bought it at costco last year for like $65 -- it's good anywhere from cold to mild weather and in rain, and I like the cut of it a lot. I haven't even used my down parka this winter, but I don't get cold very easily.

It claims to have "thermal coil technology" -- IDK what that is but it does seem warm for a relatively lightweight jacket.

Apologies if this was covered upthread, but how do you all find online stores or reliable resources for clothes? It seems like a good time to support smaller businesses and I need some stuff, but I’m also bored by a lot of clothes. There is also only one good menswear store within a 70 mile radius of where I live (and of course it is closed for the time being), so online is necessary. I’m looking for general recommendations but here is what I need right now:

1) jackets! For late spring/early summer (I am in the northeast). I don’t mind paying a little extra for something that lasts, but I want something that is both for everyday use but has some character. I’m also looking for a second jacket that’s light but a little longer that I can wear while riding my bike. Everything seems too long or too short for that.

2) Shoes. I’m not much a sneaker guy but I can be persuaded. Again this is sort of for everyday but something that looks good and can maybe take a little wear. I’m also looking for good (maybe waterproof?) hiking boots. Seems like I’m going to be found a lot of that now...

3) T-shirts. I wear a lot of t-shirts but it’s hard to find well made ones. I am not afraid of patterns in the least.

4)Pajamas ! My wife got me a pajama set and I’m really into those now, but a lot of them are a bit too dad-like (NB I am a dad, I just prefer not to dress like one). Where to find?

Things I don’t want:
- any more denim
- plaid
- khaki

pophatte (admrl), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 18:57 (two months ago) link

Again this may have been discussed, but it seems like a lot of menswear brands (in the US anyway) are all about beards, railroads, battered guitar cases, whiskey, etc. What are the other aesthetics for dads-but-not-DADS?

pophatte (admrl), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 19:04 (two months ago) link

can you share some places you've shopped in the past and gotten stuff you like? or brands you like?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 19:19 (two months ago) link

Hmmm...that’s a good question! I bought a few things from Frank + Oak (https://www.frankandoak.com/) that I liked a lot, but lately they haven’t been exciting me as much. I used to go to American Rag (https://americanrag.com/) when I was in Los Angeles. I sometimes like James Dant (https://jamesdant.com/) when I go to Indianapolis, although they have a lot of the beard thing going on. And I go to the aforementioned Jackson + Connor (https://www.jacksonandconnor.com/) here in Western Mass, which I like, but it can be pricey.

I think I’m mainly curious about how people find filters and “curators” for clothes info now. A lot of this has to to with me getting old (and trimming my beard)...

i need to check out jackson and connor next time i'm in northampton (whenever that is given current circumstances)! i had no idea there was a menswear shop in thornes marketplace.

admittedly i'm not paying attention as closely as i was a few years ago but i get the sense that the beard/workwear thing is finally passing. that american rag site is pushing a lot of patterned shirts and stuff that seems to take its inspiration for 40s/50s casualwear. i've noticed the same thing at todd snyder which has become my favorite brand for a lot of basics; their spring collection has like bowling shirts and tipped polos and loud prints.

i know what you mean as far as needing to find new filters/sources of inspiration. i'm kind of set on heritage pieces and even pre-pandemic i was WFH so much that i don't need a ton of presentable clothes. but i still enjoy seeing what's new and picking up cool stuff here and there.

for your list i'd fall back on some classics for a few of the asks. the barracuta G9 is the perfect spring jacket. i feel great every time i wear it. for everyday non-sneakers i'd look at american-made moc boots. i am going to need to revisit t-shirts myself and find some good ones for the coming warm weather. my endless supply of gray j. crew v-necks is getting pretty worn.
