love bites is rad
I don't really think of Winds of Change in this category, even though it is the Scorps. it's fun to whistle to in the car though so *shrug*

"Love Bites" does exactly what it sets out to do. Joe Elliott's meek vulnerability on "When we make looooooooooooove", the wall of voice harmonies that come in on the pre-chorus, and the monstrous chorus....boom.
sadly, on Spotify, they only have a shitty live version of it.

is "Hysteria" a power ballad? I hope so. That thing glistens.

Yeah I prefer 'Hysteria' 100 x more than 'Love Bites', and I love that whole album a TON.
'Hysteria''s awesome.

I consider it one. at least with Def Leppard ballads, they knew how to do em right, with delightful bombast.
I know it ain't cool for us metal headbangaz to admit we like Hysteria but well I do... a lot. it's a great pop album.

the thing about "I'll Be Over You" is just how wonderfully over the top it is, just imagining a bunch of well-to-do studio musicians rock stars laying out their 15 year old melodrama without any irony.
Some people live their dreamsSome people close their eyesSome people's destinyPasses by
lol 'destiny'
and then I like how Lukather sets it up in the pre-chorus to be like "but y'know, I'll be ok with the next line"
It takes some timeGod knows how longI know that I can forget you
and then hits you with the punchline

I just looked at four undergrad textbooks on popular music or rock music. The only one that lists "power ballad" in its index is Covach's What's That Sound?. All he says is "[ i ]n a power ballad, the singer ... is given a chance to display his sensitive side, as the song often begins with a quiet expressive section, before the heavy guitars and drums enter to pump up the arrangement." He gives "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" as a representative example. This is pretty close to how I understand power ballads: the soft-loud contrast seems important to me. So in this sense, "Hysteria" wouldn't really be a power ballad in the way that "Love Bites" (or "Bringing On the Heartbreak") is. I don't know that there's any real hard-and-fast definition, though.

textbooks that don't cite Home Sweet Home as the textbook-definition of a power ballad are suspect imo
every rose is a ballad but it's kind of on the limp side ie lacking POWER

'every rose' and 'silent lucidity' and 'when the children cry' and 'more than words' err too much on the side of sensitivity, you need to have less wimpy 'why is the world sad' proselytizing or james taylor begging and more 'momma let me tell you' type testifying.

Hush now, don't you cryWipe away the teardrop from your eyeYou're lying safe in bedIt was all a bad dreamSpinning in your headYour mind tricked you to feel the painOf someone close to you leaving the game of lifeSo here it is, another chanceWide awake you face the dayYour dream is over... or has it just begun?
There's a place I like to hideA doorway that I run through in the nightRelax child, you were thereBut only didn't realize and you were scaredIt's a place where you will learnTo face your fears, retrace the yearsAnd ride the whims of your mindCommanding in another worldSuddenly you hear and seeThis magic new dimension
I- will be watching over youI- am gonna help you see it throughI- will protect you in the nightI- am smiling next to you, in Silent Lucidity
[spoken during solo](Visualize your dream)(Record it in the present tense)(Put it into a permanent form)(If you persist in your efforts)(You can achieve dream control)(Dream control)(How are we feeling today, better??)(Dream control, dream control)(Help me)
If you open your mind for meYou won't rely on open eyes to seeThe walls you built withinCome tumbling down, and a new world will beginLiving twice at once you learnYou're safe from pain in the dream domainA soul set free to flyA round trip journey in your headMaster of illusion, can you realizeYour dream's alive, you can be the guide but...
I- will be watching over youI- am gonna help to see it throughI- will protect you in the nightI- am smiling next to you....

I always hated how Tate said "of life" in an intense whisper, as if he had just blown our minds with that 'out of nowhere' metaphor.
or how in live performances, he would point as his head, indicating, when he sang "in yr head"

Like, those are not power ballad lyrics, you get that? These are power ballad lyrics:
I never needed love like I need youAnd I never lived for nobody, but I live for youOooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with youMaybe it's the way you touch me with the warmth of a sunMaybe it's the way you smile, I come all undoneOooh, babe, lost in love is that I feel when I'm with youBaby, oh I get chills when I'm with youBaby, my world stands still when I'm with youWhen I'm with youI never cared for nobody like I care for youAnd I never wanted to share the things I want to share with youOooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with youBaby, oh I get chills when I'm with youBaby, my world stands still when I'm with youWhen I'm with youBaby, oh I get chills when I'm with youBaby, my world stands still when I'm with youWhen I'm with youWhen I'm with youWhen I'm with you...
Maybe it's the way you touch me with the warmth of a sunMaybe it's the way you smile, I come all undoneOooh, babe, lost in love is that I feel when I'm with you
Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with youBaby, my world stands still when I'm with youWhen I'm with you
I never cared for nobody like I care for youAnd I never wanted to share the things I want to share with youOooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with you
Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with youBaby, my world stands still when I'm with youWhen I'm with youWhen I'm with youWhen I'm with you...

I actually agree: it was a really weak example for Covach to use! "Bringing On the Heartbreak" is my go-to example.

And a few people were attacking it on grounds of not being a good power ballad or not as good as "Heaven" when I think it's going for something completely different.
I have no problem with calling "Jet City Woman" a power ballad.

only if the lyrics were
"Awww, baby, I can't remember anything (about last night)Can't tell if this is true or dream (you here by my side)Deep down inside I feel to scream (in ecstacy)This terrible silence stops me (oooooh babe)"

OTM.
The irony is, of course, that I'm being anal and hairsplitting about power ballad criteria immediately after demonstrating that there's no real accepted definition.

Sister Christian is retroactively redeemed by that scene in Boogie Nights.
Sister Christian was redeemed for me because my best friend's brother was named Christian and we mercilessly taunted him with that song.
