"Forever" by the 80's incarnation of KISS is always overlooked.

honestly, I used to have a playlist of this shit for like when I was trying to get to sleep at night, cuz cheesy ballads don't require much concentration, are usually earwormy, won't sound awesome enough to keep me awake active listening, and send me to the arena of my dreams. Shit I used to have on my sleepytime mix tapes included:

Skid Row-Wasted Time
Def Leppard - Love Bites
W.A.S.P. - Hold On to My Heart
Chicago - Will You Still Love Me? (FP me if you must)
Peter Cetera - The Glory of Love
Symphony X - Candlelight Fantasia (seriously this is awesome!)
Savatage - When the Crowds are Gone (this too!)
Jimmy Harnen - Where Are you Now
Starship - Sara
Stone Sour - Bother (yes, I'm aware of how horrible and faux-Def Leppardy it is)
Toto - I'll Be Over You

love bites is great, the production on that song knocks me out

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:07 (ten years ago) link

that got to #1 in the states didnt it?

love bites is rad

I don't really think of Winds of Change in this category, even though it is the Scorps. it's fun to whistle to in the car though so *shrug*

"Love Bites" does exactly what it sets out to do. Joe Elliott's meek vulnerability on "When we make looooooooooooove", the wall of voice harmonies that come in on the pre-chorus, and the monstrous chorus....boom.

sadly, on Spotify, they only have a shitty live version of it.

is "Hysteria" a power ballad? I hope so. That thing glistens.

Yeah I prefer 'Hysteria' 100 x more than 'Love Bites', and I love that whole album a TON.

'Hysteria''s awesome.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

I consider it one. at least with Def Leppard ballads, they knew how to do em right, with delightful bombast.

I know it ain't cool for us metal headbangaz to admit we like Hysteria but well I do... a lot. it's a great pop album.

omg lol @ your sleepytime playlist,

in partic

Chicago - Will You Still Love Me? (FP me if you must)

and that Toto song.

yeah its the type that I have to play at low volume in my room so my housemates don't burst into my room, pointing and laughing.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:19 (ten years ago) link

make no bones tho, other than that song, "Africa", and "Rosanna", if I hear Toto I drop what I'm doing and kick the nearest person's ass.

the thing about "I'll Be Over You" is just how wonderfully over the top it is, just imagining a bunch of well-to-do studio musicians rock stars laying out their 15 year old melodrama without any irony.

Some people live their dreams
Some people close their eyes
Some people's destiny
Passes by

lol 'destiny'

and then I like how Lukather sets it up in the pre-chorus to be like "but y'know, I'll be ok with the next line"

It takes some time
God knows how long
I know that I can forget you

and then hits you with the punchline

As soon as my heart stops breakin'
Anticipating
As soon as forever is through
I'll be over you

That Toto song is closer to Richard Marx.

is "Hysteria" a power ballad? I hope so. That thing glistens.

I just looked at four undergrad textbooks on popular music or rock music. The only one that lists "power ballad" in its index is Covach's What's That Sound?. All he says is "[ i ]n a power ballad, the singer ... is given a chance to display his sensitive side, as the song often begins with a quiet expressive section, before the heavy guitars and drums enter to pump up the arrangement." He gives "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" as a representative example. This is pretty close to how I understand power ballads: the soft-loud contrast seems important to me. So in this sense, "Hysteria" wouldn't really be a power ballad in the way that "Love Bites" (or "Bringing On the Heartbreak") is. I don't know that there's any real hard-and-fast definition, though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:55 (ten years ago) link

textbooks that don't cite Home Sweet Home as the textbook-definition of a power ballad are suspect imo

every rose is a ballad but it's kind of on the limp side ie lacking POWER

anyway I'm subverting the conversation to BEST powerballads

'every rose' and 'silent lucidity' and 'when the children cry' and 'more than words' err too much on the side of sensitivity, you need to have less wimpy 'why is the world sad' proselytizing or james taylor begging and more 'momma let me tell you' type testifying.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 00:00 (ten years ago) link

silent lucidity is def the worst power ballad in the history of putting words to music
cf Queensryche stink like a big stinky turd anyway

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 00:01 (ten years ago) link

i should say 'why is the world sad, let me offer a vague unrealistic solution for all of us to follow'

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 00:02 (ten years ago) link

lol totally agree about silent lucidity
i hate that song
it's no "heaven" lemme tell ya

Hush now, don't you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is, another chance
Wide awake you face the day
Your dream is over... or has it just begun?

There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly you hear and see
This magic new dimension

I- will be watching over you
I- am gonna help you see it through
I- will protect you in the night
I- am smiling next to you, in Silent Lucidity

[spoken during solo]
(Visualize your dream)
(Record it in the present tense)
(Put it into a permanent form)
(If you persist in your efforts)
(You can achieve dream control)
(Dream control)
(How are we feeling today, better??)
(Dream control, dream control)
(Help me)

If you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see
The walls you built within
Come tumbling down, and a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize
Your dream's alive, you can be the guide but...

I- will be watching over you
I- am gonna help to see it through
I- will protect you in the night
I- am smiling next to you....

wtf kind of robot writes a song like that

I always hated how Tate said "of life" in an intense whisper, as if he had just blown our minds with that 'out of nowhere' metaphor.

or how in live performances, he would point as his head, indicating, when he sang "in yr head"

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 00:09 (ten years ago) link

or how in live performances, he would point as his head, indicating, when he sang "in yr head ZOMBIE ZOMBIE"

I still refuse to consider that song any sort of power ballad, unless you're also going to call "Comfortably Numb" and "Hey You" power ballads.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 00:11 (ten years ago) link

consider it more a 'faux-new-agey soft-serve assed' ballad

A thread for the worst ballads/power ballads by rawk bands

its not just power ballads itt

Like, those are not power ballad lyrics, you get that? These are power ballad lyrics:

I never needed love like I need you
And I never lived for nobody, but I live for you
Oooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with you

Maybe it's the way you touch me with the warmth of a sun
Maybe it's the way you smile, I come all undone
Oooh, babe, lost in love is that I feel when I'm with you

Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with you
Baby, my world stands still when I'm with you
When I'm with you

I never cared for nobody like I care for you
And I never wanted to share the things I want to share with you
Oooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with you

Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with you
Baby, my world stands still when I'm with you
When I'm with you

Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with you
Baby, my world stands still when I'm with you
When I'm with you
When I'm with you
When I'm with you...

I actually agree: it was a really weak example for Covach to use! "Bringing On the Heartbreak" is my go-to example.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 00:15 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, but somebody called it a power ballad.

And a few people were attacking it on grounds of not being a good power ballad or not as good as "Heaven" when I think it's going for something completely different.

I have no problem with calling "Jet City Woman" a power ballad.
