i do have a soft spot for some of these 'lick my love pump' slow jams but there's only a couple mentioned thus far that i like. 'love bites' being supreme. other good ones: 'alone again' by dokken, 'don't close your eyes' by kix.

yeah "alone again" is solid and "don't close your eyes" is all-time

tight in the runs (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 01:06 (ten years ago) link

appealing to the ladies?

I would have thought love song ballads did that quite well. It just seems weird that it went from there to dealing with serious topics

tho its not all ballads

"Don't Close Your Eyes" is INSANE.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 01:23 (ten years ago) link

Does this count?

(OK, AMG says there's a mandocello on "The Flame". I'm not that familiar with that instrument tbh but yeah, it does sound more mandolin-like, for sure. I'm not sure that's not a guitar on "Nature's Way" though. Only guitars are listed in the credits on AMG. I just checked out three live clips where it is played on a guitar.)

xposts I kind of love "Don't Close Your Eyes".

"when the children cry" is the worst

Alias - More Than Words Can Say
Cheap Trick - The Flame
Peter Cetera and Cher - After All
Bryan Adams - Heaven

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 02:19 (ten years ago) link

Ha, I love that Alias song too. I honestly didn't know that its success extended beyond Canada.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 02:35 (ten years ago) link

I remember hearing it a LOT as a kid. that and the Styx song "Show Me the Way" and that Michael W. Smith crossover tune "Place in this World"

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 02:37 (ten years ago) link

Ha, Alias was a supergroup with members of Sheriff and Heart!

This was like 5 times as big as that Alias song (went top 5 twice iirc):

Wow @ the last note in "When I'm With You"

I love a lot of power ballads unashamedly and some enthusiastically, but Steelheart's "I'll Never Let You Go" is THE ABSOLUTE WORST SONG OF THE 90S AND PERHAPS THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY.

"worst power ballads" thread starts off with "to be with you," a song that totally rules, so, uh, okay

my best friend and his wife, both of whom share much of my taste, chose "Love of a Lifetime" as their wedding dance last summer.

i grimaced after reading that

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

For weeks before the wedding I was offended -- I thought they were trolling! But they genuinely love the song, and it became theirs after they heard it on a satellite radio station a few weeks into dating.

all of my high school friends listened to the infamous 103.5 THE BLAZE in chicago, which between maybe '89 and '92 was playing nothing but "metal" such as this. along with some classic rock a la aerosmith, zep, kansas, rush, pink floyd, bad company, journey, etc. i think right around the time of trixter and 'adrenalize' the station plunged. they tried to keep up by putting nirvana and PJ in the playlist but Q101 was way ahead of them and basically stole half their audience.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link

more power ballads to 'em i guess

since we're posting vg's fave music apparently then this needs to be added
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-6GvkmMPv4

honestly, I used to have a playlist of this shit for like when I was trying to get to sleep at night, cuz cheesy ballads don't require much concentration, are usually earwormy, won't sound awesome enough to keep me awake active listening, and send me to the arena of my dreams. Shit I used to have on my sleepytime mix tapes included:

Skid Row-Wasted Time
Def Leppard - Love Bites
W.A.S.P. - Hold On to My Heart
Chicago - Will You Still Love Me? (FP me if you must)
Peter Cetera - The Glory of Love
Symphony X - Candlelight Fantasia (seriously this is awesome!)
Savatage - When the Crowds are Gone (this too!)
Jimmy Harnen - Where Are you Now
Starship - Sara
Stone Sour - Bother (yes, I'm aware of how horrible and faux-Def Leppardy it is)
Toto - I'll Be Over You

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:05 (ten years ago) link

love bites is great, the production on that song knocks me out

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:07 (ten years ago) link

that got to #1 in the states didnt it?

love bites is rad

I don't really think of Winds of Change in this category, even though it is the Scorps. it's fun to whistle to in the car though so *shrug*
