Holy fuck, I always thought I was a 1976 partisan but this might actually be my favourite of these lists. Love all of these, with some all-time faves in there:

The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St.
2 16 David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
5 109 Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
6 137 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
8 204 Roxy Music - Roxy Music
9 250 Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?
10 251 Deep Purple - Machine Head
11 256 Nick Drake - Pink Moon
13 431 Big Star - #1 Record
14 436 Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill
15 456 Deep Purple - Made in Japan
19 584 Yes - Close to the Edge

I'll probably vote for Yes but Stevie and Roxy are close.

This is the best year so far. "Exile" is my answer to this.

Treeship, Thursday, 1 August 2013 02:08 (ten years ago) link

Would've voted Aretha or Miles, voting Stevie.

Esperanto, why don't you come to your senses? (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 1 August 2013 02:11 (ten years ago) link

Roxy just barely over Big Star, but my recent love affair with krautrock may change that a year from now.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 1 August 2013 02:21 (ten years ago) link

That first Roxy album still has a sort of otherworldliness to it.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 1 August 2013 02:22 (ten years ago) link

OTM, this year is really hard to pick just one.

Bee OK, Thursday, 1 August 2013 02:24 (ten years ago) link

Saint Dominic's Preview is too low.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 1 August 2013 02:53 (ten years ago) link

voting Stevie for the 4th time

suggest bando (The Reverend), Thursday, 1 August 2013 03:03 (ten years ago) link

it's a compilation and overly familiar besides, but soundtrack to the harder they come is a monster. love curtis' superfly, too. good year for soundtracks.

and stones, bowie, stevie, nick drake, big star, can, cap'n beef. ridiculous.

wish on the corner were an option tho.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Thursday, 1 August 2013 03:14 (ten years ago) link

lot of great stuff here but exile easy

balls, Thursday, 1 August 2013 03:21 (ten years ago) link

when I saw Pink Moon on this list I voted for it without hesitating. nb I am not twee.

loosely inspired by Dr. Dre (crüt), Thursday, 1 August 2013 05:36 (ten years ago) link

Roxy Music is one of my five favourite albums of all time, so that.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 1 August 2013 05:46 (ten years ago) link

Sailin' Shoes for me.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 August 2013 05:52 (ten years ago) link

I voted Neu!

paolo, Thursday, 1 August 2013 10:58 (ten years ago) link

Super annoyed at some of the albums that made it instead of Vol. 4 but Roxy (as well as Exile) is so good as to negate a lot of that egregiousness

chicken (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 1 August 2013 11:00 (ten years ago) link

My year! Amazing year for singles--posted a '72 poll last year: Feb. 5, 1972. From that list of albums, Something/Anything and Al Green loom large. But Exile of course.

Voted for the O'Jays because it needs a vote and for people who haven't heard it to give it a spin.

jetfan, Thursday, 1 August 2013 14:37 (ten years ago) link

Clear Spot for me but that year list is full of greatness. Also, Something/Anything, Talking Book and Ziggy all contenders for that "Best Production Of All Time" thread. (BTW, hats off to Ted Templeman for producing three of those top 25.)

1972 really feels like the year "the 70s" began

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 1 August 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

I guess it's between "Exile", "Talking Book", and "St. Dominic's" for me. I think I'll probably vote "Talking Book", partly to compensate for not voting for "Fulfillingness" in the other poll, and partly because it's just a darned great album. "Exile" will get plenty of votes without me, and besides, I think it's maybe just a smidge overrated - I mean I'm not even sure if I've ever listened to the whole thing all the way through. "St. Dominic's" is definitely too low here.

o. nate, Thursday, 1 August 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link

Vol. 4 got totally robbed here. As did Eat a Peach. I have a hard time thinking of albums from any year, much less '72, better than those.

I'll vote Made in Japan.

killer year no matter what but i voted for 'ziggy stardust' pretty much without thinking twice, i've probably listened to that album more than any other.

with that picture it seems like Marlon Brando is saying. The Rolling Stones released Exile in 1972 but...

Bee OK, Friday, 2 August 2013 01:55 (ten years ago) link

for me it the battle of Bowie, Young, Wonder, Reed, Mayfield or Drake.

Bee OK, Friday, 2 August 2013 01:57 (ten years ago) link

I think Brando is protesting the exclusion of People...Hold On by Eddie Kendricks.

Josefa, Friday, 2 August 2013 07:12 (ten years ago) link

voted superfly, which i like as much as anything on this list (impossible to pick a true favorite), but isn't so often mentioned around here as some of the others.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Friday, 2 August 2013 14:42 (ten years ago) link

taking next week off, so this is going to be the last one for awhile.

The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St.
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
The Harder They Come Soundtrack
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Yes - Close to the Edge
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Clear Spot

love all these. voted Stones as it's my all-time favorite.
I think I'm loving that Can album more and more with time.

How on earth did On the Corner miss the cut? Still needs some revisionism.

Voted Neu!

the 1st roxy just ahead of pink moon and harvest. it still sounds modern and classic at the same time to my ears.

Top 5:

Ege Bamyasi
Roxy Music
Can't Buy a Thrill

Another great year, the early '70s are such a goldmine.

'70s Steely Dan shut out--must be a first.

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 00:30 (ten years ago) link

four years pass...

While working today I had an online year randomizer choose a year for albums I would listen to throughout my shift. The year was 1972.

This is the playlist:

Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Dust - Hard Attack
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
Babe Ruth - First Base
Funkadelic - America Eats Its Young

Now that I am home, I am playing the self-titled White Witch album as a "bonus track" of sorts.

1972 is such a great year, all the albums with over three votes are 10's or very close to a 10.
