another nice "brooklyn we go hard" one (awful brand name) - considering this for fun shirt dress-coded wedding.

i also quite like this, from same store, bit more something i'd wear under other stuff though. (this is kinda my approach to fun shirts generally.

sorry didn't realise how massive they'd be.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 22:12 (ten years ago) link

my thoughts exactly before I read your comment on the second one. i like the first one a lot.

i think maybe it's harder for a fun shirt to pull off the full-length sleeves, especially because it's a look associated with more formal wear. the second one could almost be pulled off, but it has an almost multicoloured polystyrene look going on that is texturally off-putting. wld wear w/the right kind of blazer tho.

bi goose aka the skein divider (qiqing), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:10 (ten years ago) link

I prefer long-sleeves for pretty much everything (and you can roll up the sleeves!), only reason I wouldn't wear the second one is that it's tonally quite dark and I know that doesn't suit me - it is very nice though, pretty Liberty-ish.

In any case, "Men of ILX" is a very good name for a shop.

wakaflockinihilipilification (seandalai), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:29 (ten years ago) link

I prefer long sleeves too, but rolling up the sleeves isn't always going to be a good look or option. sometimes the problem is that there's too much material, too much fun. the shorter sleeved fun shirts also tend to be 'cuffed' mid-bicep, which unless you're swole makes for a more apt casual look than you would get from an elbow-rolled long sleeve. imo, also really depends on the shirt, body shape, cut, climate etc. kinda hard not to come off like a pedantic styleforum asshole in this thread. just waiting for elmo et al to swoop.

bi goose aka the skein divider (qiqing), Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:01 (ten years ago) link

i saw a man at dinner tonight whose biceps were straining the cuffs of his short sleeve chambray, he was indeed very handsome, then i got dizzy and passed out in my grits

no but i dig short-sleeves for the most part but i wear long sleeves most of the time & cuff when needed. i don't like a lot of fussy epaulets or military details or cuff buttons or what have you, which show up on a lot of dudes s/s button shirts i feel? i feel like white mormon s/s shirt has a distinct 'nasa control room' charm if done well.

i like that first one but probly wouldn't wear it. the 2nd one, the l/s floral there is pretty great. if i wore it i would probably go for the full clown and pair it with a tartan necktie because i'm fuckin classy

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:07 (ten years ago) link

haha yes to nasa control room

but also shades of http://www.moviegazetteonline.com/images/Falling.jpg

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:11 (ten years ago) link

bi goose aka the skein divider (qiqing), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:38 (ten years ago) link

i feel like long sleeve shirts of this type that are not legit fun tend to be a bit paul smithy :-(

caek, Thursday, 25 July 2013 05:53 (ten years ago) link

I know what you mean, a bit Jonathan Ross. But it can be done. Some of the Liberty print shirts are amazing IMO, the detailing is cool and they have a really ancient vintage feel. Got a really nice one in their sale.

"itt FUN HATS" is that way -->

wakaflockinihilipilification (seandalai), Thursday, 25 July 2013 09:07 (ten years ago) link

i kinda want a pair of fun trousers - can't find one to suit the image in my mind tho, plus most "slim fit" trousers are like clown pants on me so my options are probably limited.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Thursday, 25 July 2013 09:09 (ten years ago) link

bucket hats nooooooooooooooo

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 11:59 (ten years ago) link

i mean as far as bucket hats go those are pretty nice, i guess? but it's hard to tell be cause it's a damn bucket hat. they make me think of dave matthews band

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 12:00 (ten years ago) link

slightly off topic but like, do any of you even wear hats? in summer i mean? i burn a bit through my hair and so i should, but i really can't find a hat that i don't hate.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Thursday, 25 July 2013 12:06 (ten years ago) link

I have a fun £2 hat with a pink floral pattern (probably a bucket hat, sorry) that I wear to weddings/black tie events (ok, I admit I'm that guy) but I don't know how to wear hats in a serious way.

paul smith shirts, as worn by british tv presenters ca. 2002, and every dutch office professional i've ever met (no idea how the dutch aren't a fashion laughing stock to the same extent as germans)

i wear cheap panama knockoffs/straw fedoras, currently sporting one with crown of a particularly dull shade of blue that i bought from m&s in an emergency on a day of extreme sunshine and no shade. i'm not proud of it but needs must.

fedora trilby. i'm not completely insane.

Thread needs a pic of caek's chinoiserie village fun shirt, I have witnessed it.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:58 (ten years ago) link

there are nicer paul smith shirts than those two awful ones. i am not wild about shirts that lack button down collars tho, personally. liberty tops paul smith tho.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Thursday, 25 July 2013 16:11 (ten years ago) link

i bought a fun shirt today

乒乓, Thursday, 25 July 2013 16:13 (ten years ago) link

fun fun fun, my bf recently found this shirt (not the one in the photograph but an identical one) -- apparently this is a florida turnpike toll collector uniform shirt?

http://www.dadsdumbbrains.com/901/pict2088t.jpg

you know it's a uniform because there's a little extra tab of fabric sewn on the breast where you can pin your name tag without tearing up the shirt.

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 16:13 (ten years ago) link

ha laurel there is already a pic of me in that shirt itt! itt "FUN SHIRTS"

caek, Thursday, 25 July 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

caek, Thursday, 25 July 2013 18:31 (ten years ago) link
