man, some of these combos are damn near impossible. i've spent like 15-20 min. just trying to nail a single string in the challenge/training mode. i can understand making them prohibitively difficult but some require like absolutely precise timing.

First impressions are great - glad to finally get my hands on this thing. Love most of the graphics, the colors, backgrounds and animations. Package seems quite deep - definitely seeing myself putting a ton of time into this (and hopefully getting decent). Controls mostly seems a little easier that Turbo HD. Gotta retrain myself on the two button throws, though I guess I understand why they changed it (no more happy accidents). Balrog seems weaker? Am I right in thinking focus attack let you pass through fireballs, or no?

I hurt myself playing this tonight. Also I now suck at street fighter ;_;

This "Indestructible" theme song sure is... something.

The challenge rooms don't do the best job at explaining what you're supposed to do. I got stuck on the third batch, dealing with cancelling - don't really understand what they want me to do there. Has anybody seen a nice online video tutorial that slowly goes through cancelling? Or wanna have a go at explaining it (read the manual paragraph on it, but it made my head hurt).

Seth second round ended my night. Was getting a little frustrated there, but I'm sure I'll be able to get past him tomorrow / when less tired.

Nitpick: The logo on the spine of the box.

jeff, this guy's videos will help you see the distance and timing you need for some of the challenges

I don't know but I think maybe the david sirlin super turbo tutorials (on yt) explain cancelling, possibly the intermediate one

I know, right. some of them aren't even technically difficult, like j.HP, cr.MK, cr.MK, cr.HK which is ryu's level 1 hard challenge but the timing on the combos is so new and finnicky it makes them really difficult; some of the target combos (still dunno what that means), which are only two inputs (e.g. for fuerte far st.MK, st.MK) are nails o_O

cozwn, Thursday, 19 February 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago) link

friendly technical tip: the comboing system in this one is a bit difft. to ST, where you can cancel (xx) a normal into a special, a normal into a normal, and a normal from a cancelled normal can be cancelled into a special

in SF4, you can still cancel a normal into a super and you can cancel a normal into a normal, but you can't cancel a normal into a special if that normal itself has been cancelled off another normal, so for instance ryu's fwd.HP (the overhead one) can be comboed if you cancel it into a cr.LP

because you cancelled the fwd.HP into cr.LP you can't then cancel that LP into a hadoken, what you need to do is create a link, which in this case is easiest done by putting another cr.LP after the first (which is a slower input window, kinda like a half musical beat between the LPs) which can then be cancelled into the hadoken

so you can't fwd.HP xx cr.LP xx Hadoken but have to fwd.HP xx cr.LP, cr.LP xx Hadoken; someone pls correct me if I am wrong

(suggest banning myself for this one too btw)

cozwn, Thursday, 19 February 2009 09:19 (fifteen years ago) link

jeff, at 00:15 in this vid, DS explains cancelling

cozwn, Thursday, 19 February 2009 09:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Am I understanding the Sirlin video correctly that cancelling just means doing a second move at the exact frame that your first move hits or is blocked?

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess I was thinking that cancelling meant, well, stopping your first move from coming out, as the word cancel would seem to more than imply

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i have HD now shall i buy a playstation 3 and this?

argh oh noes! \∫Öζ/ (ken c), Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

They usually don't actually mean cancelling the move, but cancelling part of the first move's recovery animation following the hit, so the next attack follows quickly in a string.

Nhex, Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:56 (fifteen years ago) link

so im basically getting killed as vega which is weird since hes been my best or second best character since turbo for the SNES but looking at the tiers i shouldnt be surprised. but the damage his combos do is just ridic

ugh i should just stick to rose soul reflect pwns so damn hard

Lamp, Friday, 20 February 2009 02:26 (fifteen years ago) link

so is everyone still just playing through the challenges??? ive started working on unlocking seth, gouken and akuma so far ive unlocked rose (with vega) and fei long (abel)

basically loving this game so far ^_^

I am getting my fucking ass kicked. I feel like I'm something like 22-100 in arcade mode. Was just playing as Abel on medium and got beat by Sagat for 45 minutes in a row.

mayor jingleberries, Friday, 20 February 2009 05:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Still can't convince myself to buy this with my current 360 controller, and apparently the fightpads are impossible to get here.

Brilli.am/writes (Will M.), Friday, 20 February 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

ive been playin on a pad it sucks, for sure, but its less of a detriment to certain characters according to srk. ill probably end up picking up a TE at some point but kind of cant justify the expense. maybe ill win one of the mini-tournies and get it for free

here is a short one-act play not about gaza:

BOSS: you look tired. out late last nite

LAMP: uh... no. [sheepishly] i was playing SFIV. and then i woke up early so i could play before work

BOSS: what's it like

LAMP: [spends exactly twelve minutes discussing the new tiers, how much worse vega is as a character, EX damage, the worthlessness of ppl that main Ken (worse than Hitler!) and on-line matching]

BOSS: ...

LAMP: so... it turns out im kinda into street fighter

My friend beat me over and over again, so I suggested he play online, where other dudes beat my friend over and over again.

So basically I am the worst at this game.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 20 February 2009 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't find the analog stick on the default 360 controller; it's a bit imprecise but it's better than trying to use the horrible d-pad. The button layout is much more problematic - the triggers are too slow to respond to be used for anything that requires timing and the left bumper above the stick is awkward to hit. It also makes throws and PPP / KKK moves more challenging.

Unfortunately word is that the 3rd party controllers won't be available in Canada until March and even then reports of reliability have been....mixed.

Despite control issues I am still having a great time online playing against friends (not Ken) and everyone else (Ken). Hope they patch in a party / lobby system soon.

What's so bad about Ken in SFIV, out of curiosity?

Nhex, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:54 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty sure "in SFIV" is unnecessary there; hasn't he been hated since forever?

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 20 February 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

nah he's pretty good (exc. he's a fanny and no ryu, obv), there's just a lot kicking around on xbl

cozwn, Friday, 20 February 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link

playing against friends (not Ken) and everyone else (Ken)

@ Nhex for me its just this ^^^. he's a generic midtier dude easier to defend against then blanka but he shows up waaay too much and it gets boring playing him all the time.

"plays Ken" is like shortform for asshole n00b/spammer now and if i had the time i might main Ken just for that surprise factor when playing good players on-line. also for lulz

you contemptibel nerd you yuppie fukkin homo (Lamp), Friday, 20 February 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

FP > Flaming Shoryuken.

The game is young though, I hope people will branch out more as the player base matures. If not, well, I have opponents to work on my Gen game with...

Matt D, Friday, 20 February 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I can only play balrog to any standard in this, cos my qcf skills are pretty rusty after caning deejay in HDR... I keep going ryu tho, my hadoken rate is up from 30% to 60%, practice practice

done all his level 1 challenges now; gets pretty hard at level 4

cozwn, Friday, 20 February 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I greatly prefer playing as Ryu and not Ken. Ryu has better flow or something.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 20 February 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link

love this game btw but def finding the learning curve pretty steep, despite the input windows having loosened for specials

picked up a stick too so that's not helping, my game's got worse, which I'm sure is natural

cozwn, Friday, 20 February 2009 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link

I got a stick too and Im sure its better than the controller but its still kinda rough going with limited practice. Its tough because this game definitely makes you pay for your mistakes if you accidentally screw up a hadoken and end up jumping (which I do all the goddamn time).

mayor jingleberries, Friday, 20 February 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I will attempt to buy this tomorrow and throw down. It's been YEARS since i played SFII more than a single match.

chars I'm digging in desc. order: balrog, rose, rufus, dhalsim, ryu, guile

rly enjoying it now I've had a proper go at it w/my HDR crew; sorely lacking lobbies and the ability to spectate but I've faith tht'll come in a future patch

anyone want to throw down w/us on 360, add me gt:cozeny

cozwn, Friday, 20 February 2009 22:35 (fifteen years ago) link

i wonder if i could get by in SFIV with my old ryu steez (rarely use special moves, just getting in there with fierce kicks and throws). probably not very well, i'm guessing.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 20 February 2009 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I've been playing the hell out of this. Can't seem to find a character that i really dig though. I can usually tear it up with M. Bison (people just don't know how to block and punish it seems) but he's kind of boring to me. Gouken seems pretty cool what with his throw-into-ultra and parries. Too bad I kind of suck with him.

So tired of people who play shotos exclusively. Especially fucking Ken.

I'm going to have to stop clicking on this thread. I don't have a PS3 or 360 - my jealousy is out of control. I will bump this thread in several years when the PS4 and the Xbox1280 are duking it out and I manage to snag a PS3 and SFIV for $120 somewhere.
