Is anyone else sort of immune to the videos? I've experienced this feelinf all my life but something about the staged, artificial nature of the videos meant to trigger the sensation falls flat with me. Not to mention a lot of the whisper videos come across as overbearing and downright creepy. It only seems to work for me if it's organic I.E. not made with the specific intent to trigger ASMR.

i could never take any kind of "role play" seriously either

xp one of my friends has the same complaint. i get into it pretty easily for the most part, except for things like the gross eating videos

ogmor, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

If I put a vacuum cleaner on to do some cleaning myself I don't get it, but if I'm lying in my room and I can hear it through the walls I get it. The video loops of people hoovering for hours and hours work for me though.

i think a lot of my favorite music & recordings trigger this for me. Morton Feldman definitely has before. A lot of noise & ambient & psychedelic rock stuff too. The Haters, New Blockaders, etc.

I swear by ASMR. When I was my mom's caregiver, for the last year of it I was under tremendous stress, so I would rely heavily on those videos to relax me, and now they allow me to get some much-needed sleep and help alleviate these panic attacks I've been getting for the last few weeks. There are two people who do ASMR just *perfectly* for me, Heather Feather and ASMRrequests (Ally), and I subscribe to both of them. It's also weird knowing that this is a relatively new "craze", for lack of a better word, because I was experiencing "tingles" from "triggers" as far back as when I was four years old, back in the early '80s.

Here's one of my favorite Heather Feather videos:

https://youtu.be/mWnpMTCtNSc

And I just adore this one by Ally because it features her character Salmon and I was so very much a Salmon in grade school:

I get the same effect from watching old Bob Ross episodes on YouTube

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 11 August 2015 08:20 (eight years ago) link

That's because Bob Ross is regarded as being the father of ASMR, and I do remember feeling those aforementioned "tingles" any time I used to watch his show as a kid. In fact, I'm sure so many of his episodes are available for viewing on YouTube because of their popularity amongst the ASMR community, and I know Heather Feather did a take on his show as her character Dark Feather.

deethelurker, Tuesday, 11 August 2015 18:05 (eight years ago) link

Julia Child's show did that for me.

genuinely didn't known of this asmr/bob ross hookup before now

somehow i find watching bob showing a certain level of skill/craft, combined with the mellow vibes of his voice, to be more engaging/relaxing than the more hardcore asmr stuff, but whatever works eh

Vasco da Gama, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 18:49 (eight years ago) link

ogmor, that's an Ally/ASMRrequests video! She does devote a lot of time and energy into creating all these unique and original characters and even doing different makeup and costuming for each of them. My favorite example of this was her twelve days of Christmas-time roleplaying, where she played a bitchy tailor shop girl, a serious store manager (who had Salmon working for her in a nearly flawless split screen), a sassy tooth fairy type, a goofy candy store employee (that one actually got me to try Toblerone for the first time), and a kind domestic, qmongst other characters. Also, I confess that what I *believe* is her first video, a basic facial care and makeup tutorial, is where I stole my current skin care regimen, except I adapted the specific products to my own facial needs.
