I once had a Waite Hoyt spoken word LP where he told this story about how the president (can't remember if it was Coolidge or Hoover) came to the park one day and they had a special thing on the field. Ruth was supposed to say some prepared remarks but when it came time, he forgot. Instead, he said something like, "Hey prez, sure is hot today isn't it?"

the usual rendering is "Hot as hell, ain't it, Prez?"

Ruth had so many great quotes--funny ones, and some that were very sentimental. Robert Creamer's biography highly recommended.

I bought that Hoyt album a year or two ago, and posted the cover on another thread.

Last Friday, July 11, was the 100th anniversary of Babe Ruth's major league debut. Picked off Shoeless Joe in the first inning.

121 today. On Thursday, I showed my class the AL league stats for 1920.

I was emphatically trying to focus their attention on the fact that Ruth out-homered every other team in the league, but the magnitude of that seemed to escape them.

Almost died during the 1918 epidemic, apparently--not because of the flu, which he did contract, but rather a quack treatment.
