two weeks pass...

Guys, get Knightmare Tower. It's great.

blinded by aggro (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 8 August 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

ffs got up early to go for a swim, saw it was drizzling, frittered away two hours building space stations in rymdkapsel.

Fizzles, Friday, 9 August 2013 07:31 (ten years ago) link

I heard about rymdkapsel from a podcast yesterday but they didn't bother to spell out the title and I spent an irritating ten minutes trying to search for it before I gave up.

JimD, Friday, 9 August 2013 08:13 (ten years ago) link

rymdkapsel is very, very good.

for those who haven't played it, it's basically a streamlined resource management game. god, that makes it sound so terrible but it's really fun! the core resources are the reactor, which you can place anywhere) and the extractors, which must be connected to certain extraction zones that are placed throughout the map. those resources enable you to build other things, like the garden and kitchen, which generate food. food enables you to add more people to your crew (or replenish your crew when they die - more on that in a sec).

what drives the game and makes it exciting and tense are the alien attack waves that you have to periodically defend against. there's a countdown bar at the bottom of the screen that lets you know how long you have until the next invasion. in order to kill the aliens, you need to build weapon defense modules (which of course cost resources). you don't need to manually shoot at the aliens; you just assign your crew to the defense module. at first, the waves are really easy to beat, but as the game continues the difficulty really ramps up and the cyclical nature of the game really comes through.

broadly, the cycle is defend > expand your base > defend. on one hand, you're expanding your base so that you can generate additional resources so you can afford to feed more people and have more people to man the defense modules against the increasingly frequent and difficult waves of enemies. on the other, you're expanding your base to try to reach the four obelisks which are spread out in the four corners of the map. when you reach the obelisk, you can assign crew to research them. researching each obelisk takes a while, but it's essential because it gives you stat boosts (you can generate resources more quickly, or make your crew move more quickly, etc.)

so there's a nice tension between macro exploration (toward the obelisks and extraction zones that are spread throughout the map, and with the added element of tetris-like shapes that need to be strategically placed to maximize efficient exploration) and micro-management of the resources.

oh yeah, one last thing - the sound is EXCELLENT. there's a nice 5-6 minute ambient/drone loop that is pretty fantastic. i had the game on pause while i made lunch and enjoyed having the song on in the background. the graphics are similarly good. clean and simple, nice looking, very functional.

they really need to make a sequel and give it a better name. i think many more people would play it.

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 17:18 (ten years ago) link

i guess i could have just posted this instead:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsG95sWQiXw

one drawback - it's $3.99 (i think), and you'll "beat" the game in a few hours. there are 3 main objectives (build all the modules, survive to a certain wave, and research all the obelisks within 45 minutes), and once you finish that, you've beaten the game. if you're going to feel ripped off if you quit playing it after 3-4 hours, even if those hours were very enjoyable, then you should probably avoid it.

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I really like it but feels like I'm never going to get past wave 22 or so, I seem to get to a point where I can't replace dead crew members before the next wave hits. I probably just need a bigger crew before I get to that stage, plus better food processing placement.

And yep, music is fantastic.

JimD, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

yeah, i'm having the same problem. i still haven't beaten it yet, but i've gotten close and i assume others (mordy!) will annihilate it. during my last runthrough, i ran into strange issues with the AI. in some cases the crew was choosing to grab resources from the opposite side of the base even though there were available resources steps away. that obviously wasted a lot of time, especially when it came to replacing dead crew members. i didn't really notice that issue the first time through - hopefully it's not something that commonly occurs.

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:39 (ten years ago) link

nobody else on knightmare tower? I just finished and it was great.

blinded by aggro (forksclovetofu), Monday, 12 August 2013 19:45 (ten years ago) link

i plan on playing it soon, but i usually just play one game at a time, and whatever the name of the game i'm playing is seemed more appealing on first glance.

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:47 (ten years ago) link

i'm one of those losers who waits for a price drop. burrito bison was great tho.

currently playing Towelfight 2 which is a goofy dual-stick rpg-thing. I usually don't like dual-sticks but this one is goofy enough with enough weird weapons to keep my attention. They just released Quadroupus too, which is a rougelike arpg with some of the same gameplay feel.

I need a recommendation for something two player and questy/rpgish/fantasy but not hardcore resource mang and not mmorpg. Two player in the sense of passing the same phone back and forth would even be fine. Basically my wife and I are d&d nerds and I want something we can play together on one or both of our phones.

Spot Lange (Jon Lewis), Monday, 12 August 2013 20:03 (ten years ago) link

knights of pen and paper is great fun but its really just a one-player game. i could imagine divvying up party members and passing back and forth between their turns. but i don't think it would work particularly well :-(

stefon taylor swiftboat (s.clover), Monday, 12 August 2013 20:09 (ten years ago) link

xp how about some of the board game ports? my wife + i play small world on her ipad and it's a lot of fun.

Mordy , Monday, 12 August 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link

My favorite RPGish game for the iPhone is still Dungeon Raid or maybe King Cashing, but that's not what you're looking for. Stuff like Warhammer Quest or Knights of the Old Republic are great but maybe a little more complicated than you're looking for. Mage Gauntlet was a fun NES/SNES style RPG. Or maybe Slayin'? Or Pocket RPG?

polyphonic, Monday, 12 August 2013 21:59 (ten years ago) link

Small world seems to be iPad only. I'd totally play that. Will check out the other recs!

tell me another totally fantastic game like trainyard with original logical puzzles that don't require split-second timing or pixel-perfect accuracy or some match the colours bejewelled bullshit, also with great graphics and gorgeous sound.

TELL ME NOW

ON IPHONE good call, sadly i've already played it on xbox. not into replaying really.

pixel defenders puzzle is like triple town meets an rpg, and while its partially random, there's no time constraints and different levels have different overall mixes of units and enemies. dream of pixels also has a really good puzzle mode.

stefon taylor swiftboat (s.clover), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 13:12 (ten years ago) link

Hey you didn't say it had to be one you hadn't already played. xp

I'm only partway through Color Zen (it was free from within the apple store app last week, not sure whether that's still the case) but it might fit at least some of those criteria, starts out very simplistic but by the third set of puzzles it starts to feel pretty chewy.

JimD, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 02:20 (ten years ago) link

aye that looks pretty good. also got the crystal maze on a whim, as it's free (haven't tried it yet or even got a vague idea of the gameplay). and hashi, which is a sudoku-ish puzzle but not half as infuriating. and mind wall which is pretty shallow and has a time element, but it's fun as far as it goes and surprisingly tricky.

PvZ2 is actually really good? there's not a paywall that i can find! and i've got hours in already...

still running after i started it this morning. not surprising as i think it will take nearly two weeks.

This is very frustrating. Prioritising rooms helped. Have accomplished first two goals. No interest in going for 45 minute research as stress would be too much. I love the snappy start up time. If only more of them did that!

just about to finish this one as well, but i'm a little annoyed at myself for not remembering that i played through this about a year ago as a flash game, for free, on kongregate or one of those kinds of websites.

Z S, Friday, 16 August 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link

You like it? I thought it was pretty perfect.

blinded by aggro (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 August 2013 01:10 (ten years ago) link

it's pretty good! i didn't mind playing through it again even though i had been through it once before, so that's a definite plus. also, the music in the menu screens reminds me a lot of final fantasy tactics, so there are subliminal good vibes there as well.

you need an option to build a fucking school where they learn *how to read a fucking map*. there was one in particular in my last abortive attempt who seemed to treat the alien invasion klaxon as an invitation to have a stroll round, maybe explore a couple of interesting hitherto undiscovered banlieus, pop to its old manor for a cup of tea, loiter uncertainly on corners etc.

Fizzles, Saturday, 17 August 2013 06:54 (ten years ago) link

I suppose they are made of sludge tho.

Fizzles, Saturday, 17 August 2013 06:54 (ten years ago) link

in fact I have some sympathy with the aliens, trying to nip this colony of congenital idiots in the bud before they infest the universe with their long-winded and purblind meanderings.
