man, if Cathy doesn't rank high in the "worst comic strips ever" poll, I basically don't even know you people

ACK!!

Esperanto, why don't you come to your senses? (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

huh amazingly only one of my five worst managed to make the nomination list

"amazingly"

"Post-Oven" (DJP), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

one of the alltime worst strips:

Mordy , Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:03 (ten years ago) link

i'm not a fan or anything but 'cathy' won't be on my worst list -- there are probably at least five things on the nominations list i think are worse.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:06 (ten years ago) link

I know Oglaf is basically a porn comic, but it's a surprisingly funny porn comic. It was mentioned on twitter a year or so ago by Dylan Horrocks or Scott McCloud (I don't remember which) and I became a fan pretty quickly.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:07 (ten years ago) link

omfg how the hell did I forget about PLUGGERS

xkcd may have just won a reprieve

"Post-Oven" (DJP), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:09 (ten years ago) link

i hope everyone remembers to vote for questionable content as worst comic ever, bc i'm fairly certain it is

Mordy , Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:09 (ten years ago) link

I'd never seen Pluggers before. What the fuck?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:10 (ten years ago) link

ha I have avoided QC like the plague so I can't in good conscience vote it the worst since I've never read it

"Post-Oven" (DJP), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:10 (ten years ago) link

also Pluggers has the distinction of being one of a very small number of comic strips that have caused me to scream obscenities at a newspaper

"Post-Oven" (DJP), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:19 (ten years ago) link

some other really strong eras of doonesbury?

GBT came back strong from his sabbatical, so yeah, 1984-1986 was a good Doonesbury time. That era features Inside Reagan's Brain, the USA for Africa series and Mike & JJ's newlywed years.

1988-1991 was also pretty good. (May as well just say 1984-91.) You had invisible Bush, the Persian Gulf War, Raoul Duke managing the David Duke campaign...

hated the Mr. Butts stuff and Mike's kid brother's Captain Condom phase or whatever that was doesn't rank high with me.

With sales of Bazooka bubble gum down, Bazooka Candy Brands announced in November of 2012 that they will no longer include the comic strip in their packaging. The new wrapper will include brain teasers, instructions, and codes that can be used to unlock videos and video games.

Here's a classic that wasn't nominated:

do you mean Bazooka Joe, or the detournement of it by "Robby Reed"? If the latter, how many did he do?

eau de feet (sic), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 04:41 (ten years ago) link

I meant original Bazooka Joe, sorry for the confusion.

Did White Boy get reprinted anywhere? All I've seen of it has been the few incredible strips in the smithsonian book.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 15:20 (ten years ago) link

there is a larger selection of full colour white boy strips in dan nadel's essential anthology Art Out of Time: Unknown Comics Visionaries 1900-1969, along with a number of other very interesting and obscure american newspaper strips - but no, there is no complete collection of it, sadly

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 16:49 (ten years ago) link

some of the best use of colour in any newspaper strip imho:

http://www.lambiek.net/artists/image/p/price_garrett/price_whiteboy.jpg

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link

the nadel bk also introduced me to (the comic book version) of Jack Mendelsohn's incredible early 1960s strip Jacky's Diary, which i'm sure if there was collection of it would make my top 40:

http://library.osu.edu/blogs/cartoons/files/2012/11/JackysDiaryWashington.jpg

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link

also there's an issue of the comics journal that reprints a good amount of white boy strips.
