i have been so busy these days. ironically, mostly writing about things to do in montreal...perhaps go out to the insectarium on friday if still here then? there's this thing at olympic stadium, which is close by to the botanical gardens/insectarium, called First Fridays, in the afternoon, where there are food trucks and activities for kids.

olympic stadium is a giant concrete behemoth far from downtown (though has two metro stations!) that the city/province has been trying to revitalize with events like this. but the stadium just dwarfs everything and makes people, well, me at least, feel insignificant and alone. i still have a weird hope for it though.

tbr the terribleness of the jfl website was factor #2 in not coming to Montreal this week

though just noticed on twooter two Mexican friends from Sydney are there today, d'oh
realized that if you click on any 2-for-30 show and click the "buy with another show for 30" button it BRINGS YOU TO A LIST THAT YOU CAN COPY INTO NOTEPAD OR EXCEL
WHY IS THIS NOT AVAILABLE IN AN EASIER WAY
anyway i am picking shows in fucking excel now so THAT'S better

we've already been to the botanic garden and the biodome, so i am very familiar with the olympic stadium. but i didn't know about first fridays so thanks for that tip!
we have just for laughs in chicago too and its website is also hard to navigate. we managed to go and see maria bamford anyways.

oh also, there is this free outdoor circus show with 40 acrobats climbing a tower thing at square/park at the corner of berri and ste-catherine every night at 7 and 10 - http://montrealcompletementcirque.com/en/evenement/babel/ i know downtown is not the place one always wants to be, but this is pretty cool i think, esp for kids
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 4 July 2013 03:03 (ten years ago) link
also there should be a food truck or two around there too, but I don't know which ones
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 4 July 2013 03:04 (ten years ago) link
There are a million websites that purport to show you the location of the food trucks, but none can seem to manage the incredibly complicated operation of putting a pin on a map and then taking it away again.
Had an idea. What about a food truck that's just a bakery that drives around and has fresh bread.

I will be there in October for a bachelor party. Montreal seems to have a certain reputation for debauchery. Residents, is this truly the case?
― More Than a Century With the Polaris Emblem (calstars), Friday, 5 July 2013 13:12 (ten years ago) link
I wish my passport was up to date -- I'd drive up to MTL next week.
― WilliamC, Friday, 5 July 2013 13:16 (ten years ago) link

my own bachelor party was in montreal, and when i told the canadian immigration official at the airport why i was visiting, she gave me a dirty look
we just went to a habs game and got drunk and saw quebecois ac/dc cover bands tho
― mookieproof, Friday, 5 July 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link
I don't know if the debaucherous reputation is justifiedbut it's got some good male nudie barscan't fap because deadlines but if you see me working in the mornings at Olimpico say hi

my move was talked about in the Toronto thread but yeah, I moved here last December. I have never been happier in a city as I have been these past months :)

we're leaving early tomorrow, sorry we couldn't meet up with anyone but we had fun. i liked doing the touristy stuff but had the most fun just wandering around mile end/plateau. best places we ate were petit alep, st-viateur/fairmount, beauty's, aux vivre (twice), and au kouign-amann (twice).
― congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 6 July 2013 00:25 (ten years ago) link
au kouign-amann (twice)
What the hell is this?
― fields of salmon, Saturday, 6 July 2013 01:13 (ten years ago) link
bakery with delicious croissants and kouign d'amann.
i figured you'd already know about it since you already know about the "terrible food" in this city.

i'm glad you all had fun, n/a! :)
i went to the Guy Maddin open filming at the Phi Centre today - it is really great! like, just fun, and he is so nice! the "audience" area is small but really close to the set(s). it's all quite efficient really, since he's filming 12 films in 13 days. Saw Roy Dupuis acting as some kind of caveman character today.

Taking the train from Kingston to Montreal today, traveling with the family, staying in a hotel in the old city for 3 nights. Any suggestions for family friendly activities or endroits? We've got a 6 year old and a 3 year old. Any restaurants we should check out?

OK so what are some good neighborhoods in which to stay Montreal for a couple of nights? I am looking at AirBnB.
― Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Thursday, 15 August 2013 15:52 (ten years ago) link
plateau mont-royal, mile-end, outremont, villeray, little italy
― socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 15 August 2013 16:00 (ten years ago) link
also WHEN~
Probably weekend of August 30th - it's our 10th wedding anniversary. Don't worry - we'll be back! (unless it sucks)
― Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Thursday, 15 August 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link
I am enjoying staring at Montrealers apartments on AirBnB to see how you people live. So you all have antique sewing machines, guitars hanging on the walls, vintage furniture, scarves and very high ceilings?
― Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Thursday, 15 August 2013 18:00 (ten years ago) link
this is the place we stayed when we were there, it was not super-fancy but it was clean and in a great location: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/466550

Great! Well maybe we see you? What are the things first-time visitors have to do? What things can I buy? Where are the best low and high end dining experiences? Odd museums and nice walks, etc.?
― Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 16 August 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link
I have eaten poutine at Animal in Los Angeles but I'm sure it doesn't compare.
― Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 16 August 2013 15:12 (ten years ago) link
That was my only poutine, is what I'm saying
honestly the city's croissants and so on are more exceptional than its poutines
― sean gramophone, Friday, 16 August 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link
that said, the best places for poutine are: Patati Patata, La Banquise, Au Pied de Cochon (just go for the regular one).
― sean gramophone, Friday, 16 August 2013 21:08 (ten years ago) link
Le Petit Alep cannot be enough recommended imo

(not poutine, for must-visit Montreal eating)
Poutine is great but Montreal is really about bagels.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 16 August 2013 21:40 (ten years ago) link
yeah, def bagels.
croissants, i wish there were more great croissants in montreal! i feel like this city kinda coasts on its french pastries...
