Also "we're getting a little old for this, but still trying to have fun!"

How the heck was Cunning Stunts not mentioned in this thread? Unless it was.

Filk Hollins (NickB), Friday, 28 June 2013 15:28 (ten years ago) link

Caravan were still doing really shit album titles in the 21st century btw, they have not lost it yet:

Ether Way (1998)
Surprise Supplies (1999)
A Night's Tale (2003)
The Unauthorized Breakfast Item (2003)

Filk Hollins (NickB), Friday, 28 June 2013 15:32 (ten years ago) link

there's also something slightly reactionary but post-60s about it, it's like "We don't really have a revolutionary bone in our bodies, but we have this vague sense that we're supposed to act like nothing matters anymore"

Yeah, definitely, it's very "No concept album to be found here, y'all! Just tryin' to provide some plain 'n' simple entertainment!" This doesn't apply to the prog versions of course.

Also it seems like record companies saved their laziest graphic designers and worst cardboard for records with these titles, they just always look so shabby and awful. Exceptions abound - that "Cunning Stunts" cover isn't bad aside from the title.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 28 June 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

Cunning Stunts was obviously a Hipgnosis job

Filk Hollins (NickB), Friday, 28 June 2013 18:41 (ten years ago) link

ha, I was thinking that but am not so up on my jacket designers that I was gonna stick my neck out and say it.

von LMO argonaut (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 28 June 2013 20:28 (ten years ago) link

gimme most of the album titles itt over pretentious nowadayz shit like Marni Stern or Fiona Apple's infamous "When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You'll Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You Know That You're Right"

Neanderthal, Friday, 28 June 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

I like album titles where you go "Is that...a real word?" but you don't tell anyone and you're too embarrassed to actually look it up.

tbh Caravan probably stole it off of someone's embarrassing uncle which I think is the genesis (npi) of the joke

dimension nickröss (DJ Mencap), Friday, 28 June 2013 22:39 (ten years ago) link

I love these album titles because like - - is the idea to convey that the band are just a bunch of cut-ups, some regular goofy guys who might do well as sitcom guest stars even while they make you boogie? So put 'em on and give 'em a spin!

totally OTM like "Hey pal, we're just doing a bit of rock n rollin over here nbd"

I've got to repost the Bernie Marsden solo album from upthread because the image is missing, it is sooooo perfect, cover and everything

They could've got Ian Gillan to sing on it and called it LGBT.

And then replaced Jack Bruce with Country Joe McDonald and titled it McDLT.

Not even sure this is a pun -- the monkey is not a "heavy pet"? I don't know why they're wired together. Baffling.

This whole thread is a pretty good nostalgia tour of mid-'80s remainder bins at mall record stores, btw.

Speaking of UFO ... didn't realize this was a pun until being reminded of the British pronunciation of faucet.

The "no heavy petting" was what the sign at the swimming pool would say, but what relevance the monkey has, dunno..

Mark G, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 20:50 (ten years ago) link

why are there so many water lines and faucets

Also apparently the couple on that "Force It" cover are Genesis P Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti.

feel like this horrible but not 70s album title belongs:

Never knew that, but it's another Hipgnosis cover and that was Peter Christopherson's day job so I guess it's not entirely surprising.

Not even sure this is a pun -- the monkey is not a "heavy pet"? I don't know why they're wired together. Baffling.

Presumably after having surgery (like getting a monkey wired to your neck) the doctors would recommend that you indulge in no heavy petting.

I was just thinking that "It's All Fun And Games Until Somebody Loses An Eye" would make a good one of these

^ first solo slbum by Alan Clarke of the Hollies. I have no idea what the title is suppose to mean, but it is truly fucking abysmal.

Ralph Vogon Williams (NickB), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:40 (ten years ago) link

Warren Zevon's "My Ride's Here" is the sort of poignant/sad exception to the rule of this stuff

what a ridiculous cover too. but awesome t-shirt

I googled just now to make sure "It's All Fun And Games Until Somebody Loses An Eye... Then It's Just Fun!" was not a Megadeth album title.

Vinnie, Thursday, 11 July 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link

I have no idea what the title is suppose to mean...

Harold Allan Clarke (5 April 1942, Salford, Lancashire) is a retired British singer who was one of the founding members of The Hollies.

Nah, it'd be like, It's All Guns and Fame Til Someone Oozes A Lie!, and it'd be written out on a postcard with a flourish, like they could have written ''wish you were here!'' And the band are standing around, leaning on each other's shoulders chuckling at the camera. And it'd be really brown.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 11 July 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

Horrible 90s Album Titles etc., would be a good thread...

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 11 July 2013 18:40 (ten years ago) link

What would define the 90s album-naming ethos -- one-word names that sound like chemical compounds?

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Thursday, 11 July 2013 18:55 (ten years ago) link

Hmmm, tough to say...these things break apart by genre I think. Did the "we're just a fun, no-fuss party band!" thing even exist in the 90s? I guess maybe in the land of vaguely funky major label alterna-metal. Most big rock bands seemed to take on at least a little grungey bummerdom, in image if not in song. Maybe something like Sugar Ray's 14:59.
