that song is kinda worthless post-calabria 2007 huh?

what was the song she did w/ t.i.? that one was good

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

that was "whatever u like", and it was just a less good version of kelis' "blindfold me"

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:50 (fifteen years ago) link

it had an incredible video though - she was on some ring type shit there. her terrifying stare in the pool scene, the body contortions, the hot coals

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the video was hot

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

whatever u like >>>> blindfold me, imo

brainless popcorn (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I still don't get why her solo career was such a failure, I mean she was totally set up to be massive

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I still don't get why she attempted a solo career, given that PCD is essentially her solo vehicle and was already massive

brainless popcorn (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago) link

her last name is hard to pronounce

loll

i remember when she performed "whatever u like" at a vmas PRE-SHOW

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

the way Wayne filled in for T.I. and did a whole new remix verse (that AFAIK was never released as a studio version) was pretty cool.

brainless popcorn (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:00 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah with lil wayne, that was kind of hot

anyway glad Keri Hilson got a hit finally so people can stop using this:

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

ya im pretty sure he just freestyled it - it was funny too because id doubt scherzinger knew what he was going to do and he started rapping about sex and he started grinding on her and she had to pretend to be like really into getting spontaneously humped by lil wayne

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:02 (fifteen years ago) link

wayne doesn't freestyle dude

brainless popcorn (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

I still don't get why her solo career was such a failure, I mean she was totally set up to be massive

too soon - should've been after two PCD albums...as big as they were she wasn't well-established enough, wasn't perceived to have paid her dues.

t.i.'s verse on 'whatever u like' is pure, raw sex.

i'm listening to it b2b with 'blindfold me' now - i thought they were on a similar level at the time but wow, listening back 'whatever u like' is so ridiculously far ahead. kelis sounds strained and vaguely wheezy compared to nicole's whiplash agility.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago) link

oh yeah another reason for 'whatever u like's superiority is obv t.i. being fine & sexy rather than nas talking about hugh grant

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

talking of hilson, this is still my favourite cut by her, and i'm still sure it was meant for scherzinger

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah t.i.'s verse is sexy - "eat it beat 'til it's swollen/you 'gon need an ice pack" jesus! but kelis still winz though because... she's Kelis!

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yess "Hands and Feet" is massive... my fave Keri is "Where Did He Go?" though.

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link

t.i. is reeeally nasty on that justin leak "if i"

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

okay listening to both "whatever you like" is better - i concede.

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

thank you Tape Store.

this song is definitely mindnumbingly wow.

sean garret is so gay I swear, he has written like every 'bad bitch' anthem of the past 5 years

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I should start a sean garrett appreciation thread

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago) link

ya "whatever u like" is crazy - too bad that beat got wasted

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago) link

lol t.i. didn't even show up for the video shoot

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago) link

oh i guess that's him in the box :/

sean garrett probably is gay. who isn't?

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago) link

his fail of a solo career is lol too

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah he did he's in the video she's all on him

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

yes his solo career is a big LOL

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i can't hold Garrett's hubris against him, when The-Dream and Ryan Leslie are releasing albums and having solo hits, who's to tell him his voice isn't good enough or he's not handsome enough to be an artist?

brainless popcorn (some dude), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah you're right

i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:27 (fifteen years ago) link

talking of hilson, this is still my favourite cut by her, and i'm still sure it was meant for scherzinger

kinda doubt it, considering it was originally released as part of the "In the Mix" OST way back in '05!

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago) link

was gonna put this in the vacuous pop thread, but in the interests of saving teh zinger from undead cassiedom --

rather than once again scrutinizing the secretly interesting thing inside the trojan horse of tim's pussycat dolls analogy, i was thinking wouldn't it be more illuminating to assess the contours and grain of the horse itself? (cos yknow, generally speaking troy fell in like 2001 amirite.) because without the dolls scherzinger is nothing, yet with them one wagers even her rankest flop mightve gained chart purchase, however counterintuitively ('i hate this part' being just as first person intimate as 'supervillain', for instance).

putting aside the eye candy canard for a sec, i'd venture that the dolls manage to diffuse the scherzinger signal without diluting it, creating like an acephalous zone of pop crowdscene that opens up an avenue into the songs that avoids the intimidating one-to-one r&b artist eye contact poetix the lone scherzinger implies. but then in a sense the horse isn't trojan at all, because everyone knows by now that the dolls do nothing whatsoever; an in-joke turned outward. if the boundaries of that zone, then, are already explicitly agreed upon by all parties, the dolls become something more like a visual autotune for scherzinger - an accepted gimmick vehicle for extremes of emotion, that the listener also employs for it to be enjoyable.

in breaking that contract, and provoking a backlash against her supposed hubris, scherzinger solo was bound to fail really. what i *think* mightve worked is if she'd first done a big cover ballad that didn't necessarily depend on establishing a brand new her, but would still be just too silly if it was a pcd group session. 'save the best for last', i'm telling you!! but oh well.

has anyone else come around to loving the Diddy single she did? i mean i liked it at first but i gradually got really into it.

yeah basically if this still fantastic song had been a PCDs single it could've been a #1 np

yathink? maybe it's just her name. scherzinger.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I think maybe you all are vastly overrating how good "Whatever You Like" actually is.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

yea i'm still warming up to that a bit.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:41 (fifteen years ago) link

nicole's a slightly colder (or um hotter) fish than yr average

^^this point from way upthread might also be key to the scherzinger's solo failure - in a group this isn't so much subsumed or diluted as transformed into high camp, but solo r&b females don't really seem to have the option to work the superbitch persona. like how girl groups can get away w/misandrist and even misanthropic female anthems, but once you go solo it's all crazy-in-love sexuality or broken-hearted balladry.

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:09 (fifteen years ago) link

but yeah the whole PCDs/nicole package is pretty unique. are the PCDs doing badly w/the new album btw, or is that just idolator's wishful thinking?

i don't know if i buy this 100%

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

the 2nd PCD album is kinda skidding along, not a flop but definitely not as big as the 1st, hasn't gone gold yet. that's only 2 singles in, though, who knows how the next one will do.

ya, total classic - i always forget this was her actual first solo appearance and the whole reason anyone ever got excited. IT'S BAD BOY, BITCH + that cold gleaming beat >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> trashy "whatever u like".

all of which reminds me!

r|t|c, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I could totally see a Nicole version of "Saved The Best For Last". I think I agree with both r|t|c and lex on this one: the Pussycat Dolls foil makes Nicole's extremism seem less extreme, more like costumery. Moreover (and this is probably just making r|t|c's point more obviously) b/c one can't really identify with "the Dolls" as such, it's very effective at promoting the good-song-ness of the songs - while at the same time they're memorable enough and actually-well-known enough that their blankness doesn't have the deflationary drag of anonymizing their songs.

Also I think visually the most important thing about PCD (who are not eye candy really - Nicole's the best looking of the lot) is their capacity to sort of stride/saunter in a line through all of their video clips, a bit like that weird fembot in the Maxi Priest "That Girl" video. It's exactly the right "look" for all the uptempo PCD songs.

Tim F, Friday, 20 February 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I would have thought that the first PCD album, rather like P!nk's I'm Not Dead and the Fergie album, would have gotten a lot of its sales from people going "okay I like at least three of the singles on this."
