Tony Levin and Terry Bozzio, awesome in the right context, couldn't possibly be any less personality-less!
OTM.
Also, I feel like I should object to calling this stuff prog except that I never actually took the time to listen to LTE or BLS.
Also also, vocals on Mindcrime are still dazzling.
are you saying you don't believe in mindcrime jjj??
There's a job for jjj in the system.

though they are really akin to the one guy who goes to concerts and yells unintelligibly that everyone else points and laughs at

Isn't that mostly just a bunch of people saying "this sucks"?

Posted by an old college friend on FB last week after a Columbus, OH show:
So, about the Queensryche show.... yes, it was Geoff "& some other guys," but those other guys kicked some serious ass (how can they not when one of those other guys is Rudy?) They did bring down the key one or two steps on pretty much everything, and there were many times Geoff decided to take the lower register instead of the high notes... but he did still hit the high notes when he chose to. To be fair, he usually made the correct choice.... he NEVER sounded bad...

Could we perhaps call it Exhibition Rock?

Haha, his synopsis is "Geoff can sing all those notes, he just doesn't want to. Greatness should be exhibited in doses."
I think I can refute Geoff still sounding great with any number of Youtube videos. I can't tell if it's because of his years of smoking, or the fact that he pretty much hates his musical legacy at this point.

I probably haven't even thought of Queensryche in over 10 years, but I'm amused by the idea that it is now "Geoff and some other guys" wherein Geoff completely blows.

The thing is, I don't think Queensryche is actually that similar to the other bands we're talking about. Except for the 10-min "Suite Sister Mary", which I always skip, there is only one song on Mindcrime that is over 6m. There are five tracks that are less than 2m. It's only proggy in the Wall sense of being a narrative-based rock opera with high-budget production. (I barely pay attention to the narrative.) The songs are mostly pretty straightforward and traditional in structure. In fact, the band was largely there to support Tate, which is very different from what Dream Theater do, let alone these instrumental exhibition bands.

"nothing is worse than Queensryche"
nonsense. Dream Theater is far far worse (I don't know why the first post says they're not allowed).

y'all should go see them with Fates Warning if they come by your town. top notch musicianship.

There's a million bands worse than Queensryche but there's few bands who ever topped their early 80s look for sheer "why would any band want to look like that" factor.

iirc Geoff Tate had to wear his hair "that way" permanently because it was a temporary bird sanctuary.

Tate has three daughters: Sabra, Bella, and Emily, along with one stepdaughter, Miranda. Tate was never married to Sabra's mother. In 2011, Miranda gave Geoff his first grandchild, giving birth to Riot Danger.[citation needed]
