yo i've been trying to remember the name of Liquid Tension Experiment for years. a few band kids were really into dream theater and by extension that, and even then it was just awe-inspiringly bad. queensryche is funnier.

my read on Queensryche has always been that there must be 4 or 5 good songs in there somewhere but I'm not nearly ready to go looking for them

Liquid Tension Experiment is instrumental, so it's at least got to be better than Dream Theater.

lol z s you were a crimson fan in the late 90s too huh
no way, i'd never heard of king crimson at that point! i just listened to LTE because i had read that it was associated with dream theater. LTE is so hilariously vain. i guess whoever ran the record label that their albums came out on asked mike portnoy (dream theater drummer) to put together a prog supergroup. so portnoy puts together a group with himself, john petrucci (dream theater guitarist), jordan rudess (who was soon to join...dream theater) and tony levin. can you imagine the vanity??
― Z S, Monday, 24 June 2013 00:06 (ten years ago) link
and then they play like THAT?!
hen that jam was over, Portnoy ended up taking Levin's bass and Charlie Benante ended up playing drums.

During this tour, on May 17, 2013, Tate created controversy during a show in St. Charles, Illinois. Ten minutes into the show, he grabbed an audience member's smartphone, turned around, and threw it over his shoulder into the crowd.[87]

how long before Geoff can brag he's spit on all members of both Queensryches on stage?

oh man
about 20 seconds into my research experiment on liquid tension experiment, i ran into this line on allmusic.com's review of their first album:
This is the second of Magna Carta's one-time-only groupings and the second to feature bassist Tony Levin. Fortunately for all concerned, it's light years beyond Black Light Syndrome, which paired Levin with guitarist Steve Stevens and drummer Terry Bozzio in an ill-conceived and poorly executed set of improvisations.
looks like i'm going to be listening to some black light syndrome in a second

We could probably do a whole thread on what I would call Guitar Clinic Bands -- those supergroups made up of mostly personality-less musician's musicians that always play at Zildjian events and the like, who make technically impeccable music that should ostensibly be at least interesting and yet is completely boring.

Posted by an old college friend on FB last week after a Columbus, OH show:
So, about the Queensryche show.... yes, it was Geoff "& some other guys," but those other guys kicked some serious ass (how can they not when one of those other guys is Rudy?) They did bring down the key one or two steps on pretty much everything, and there were many times Geoff decided to take the lower register instead of the high notes... but he did still hit the high notes when he chose to. To be fair, he usually made the correct choice.... he NEVER sounded bad...

Haha, his synopsis is "Geoff can sing all those notes, he just doesn't want to. Greatness should be exhibited in doses."
I think I can refute Geoff still sounding great with any number of Youtube videos. I can't tell if it's because of his years of smoking, or the fact that he pretty much hates his musical legacy at this point.

― i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 June 2013 19:16 (ten years ago) link
The thing is, I don't think Queensryche is actually that similar to the other bands we're talking about. Except for the 10-min "Suite Sister Mary", which I always skip, there is only one song on Mindcrime that is over 6m. There are five tracks that are less than 2m. It's only proggy in the Wall sense of being a narrative-based rock opera with high-budget production. (I barely pay attention to the narrative.) The songs are mostly pretty straightforward and traditional in structure. In fact, the band was largely there to support Tate, which is very different from what Dream Theater do, let alone these instrumental exhibition bands.
