backwards guitar figures and music boxes, there's something untried by the ambientelectroacoustic set! still, sounds pretty, and i'm willing to forgive colleen a fair bit.

and it turns out her real name is Cécile Schott.

okay, i'm listening properly now, and cynicism aside, this is like... REALLY pretty.

Anyone else digging the new one?

i haven't given it a proper listen. the album this thread is about is easily the weakest colleeen album imo.

I have no problems calling it the best.

"Les Ondes" is really wonderful stuff, and I'm annoyed that I didn't find out about her until recently when eMusic promoted it. Reminds me a bit of some of Simon Fisher Turner's stuff (e.g. the Nadja soundtrack) without the special effects. She was on Active Suspension at one point, right? Between her and Konki Duet, I'm getting the impression that I need to do some serious research on the French electronic-acoustic scene.

what did she say?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 08:48 (eleven years ago) link

I emailed first about how transcendant one of her shows was to me, and that hopefully she will be able to make it to the US again. Unfortunately, the logistics don't look good.

Leeeyoncé (Leee), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

I have to say I'm not that familiar with her music but I found her writing on her blog quite inspiring

Good news! That's a lovely cover too.

btw I would totally recommend Julia Kent to people who want to find more good cello stuff in the same sort of ballpark as Colleen

It's a lovely cover indeed. The write-up by Fact makes me highly curious to see what direction she turns next with the new LP. The album this thread is named after has been a steady fave of mine ever since it came out, but I do enjoy how she comes up with something really different every time.

Holy holy i just saw this thread and had no idea she's putting out a new album. "Everyone Alive" was BRILLIANT but i hadn't heard anything else since then. I did read her blog for a bit and especially all those wonderful animated gifs she was doing.

Looking forward to the new stuff!

This is a good read, she comes out and says some things that don't get said often enough imo. Sometimes you are a musician and you really don't feel like making music, or even listening to music, yet you have this role of Musician, and so you feel guilty about something that isn't entirely in your control. Really glad she is feeling the music again!

i don't think i'd heard of her before, but i have the new one and it is quite nice. i get an arthur russell vibe.

tylerw, Thursday, 2 April 2015 22:26 (nine years ago) link

funny how she has only 9 tour dates in the US and one of them is in New Hampshire. I bought a ticket to see her as well (but haven't heard the whole album yet)

I kind of miss the deeply melancholic Colleen, but this sunnier Colleen still makes pretty songs.

Madison Dumbbarfer (Leee), Thursday, 14 May 2015 21:43 (eight years ago) link

Wish we had a recording of her 2006 ArthurBall performance, it was a fest highlight, gorgeously psychedelic. Anyways. Here's an article we pub'd on her around that time... "UNDER A BLANKET: Amidst the culled samples and loops of antique instruments, where in Colleen‘s music is Cécile Schott?" By John Adamian

Short show!

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 03:30 (eight years ago) link

Short? She played for over an hour, though it was a good length. Very...satisfied with the show. Didn't blow my mind but pleased me and was a long time coming (to the states).

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 12 June 2015 08:16 (eight years ago) link

It didn't feel like an hour! Maybe because I'd already seen her full setlist, anything fewer songs would feel abbreviated.

Were you as hypnotized by the drum circle hypnosis as I hypnotically was?

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 17:25 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that was my favorite part. I would watch her do a whole set of dubbed out echo-ey drum things. She has done a couple of dub mixes to promote this album and they are very good!

last night's show was great! a lot of the live tracks were more chaotic/fux0red than the album versions — I loved the rapidfire knob-twiddling at the end of 'I'm Kin' and the chopped-up drum loop in 'This Hammer Breaks' (I was expecting her to use the drum onstage to generate the loop, but she used a prerecorded sample). her version of the Night of the Hunter lullaby (mentioned in the setlist Leee posted) was one of the highlights of the set; she got a cool oscillator effect by bowing her instrument while running her fingering hand rapidly up and down the strings. hopefully she'll release it someday because it seems to be a mainstay in her sets.

^wow, it is. Listened to it while waking up in bed this morning, it's gorgeous and mesmerising. Only faintly familiar with Captain of None, looking forward to catching up with the albums since then.

It's really good, but I went back to some of her older, dubbier records and still prefer those

These days it seems like I find out about records as often as not by thinking "I wonder if so and so put out an album this year? Oh they did, and I didn't see it anywhere." So I'm looking forward to checking out the new Colleen record today (sorry I missed your thread bump Leee).

New Colleen is good but not my favorite. It’s fully instrumental and gets a little samey as it goes. I miss her flat vocals.
