kitty halftime is pretty boring if kittens leave you cold (i know; i'm abnormal).

lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

oh man ny-petrescue has some serious cuties

bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:54 (sixteen years ago) link

i forced myself not to look.

lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:55 (sixteen years ago) link

bell, i think it depends on the shelter. i know some places like to make sure your housing situation is up to snuff first (not saying that yours isn't, obv., but i've seen some whack regulations like "must own residence"). i think, though, it varies from place to place.

i completely, 100% recommend volunteering at a shelter. dog-walking and socializing was the best! i grew up with a schnauzer, and was used to smaller to medium breeds. it was a little bit of a leap, but i started walking the bigger dogs at the city shelter, and almost came home with a pitbull mix named walter. he was the coolest dog. he got adopted by a family w/ a yard, so it was all good.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:58 (sixteen years ago) link

awwww.

have you done dog-walking at barc, bell? i think might do it this evening after all of this dog talk.

is walking dogs the worst part of having dogs?

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

as the person on morning (6am) and afternoon (3-4 pm) poop duty in chicago in the winter, i would say yes.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

but it's not so bad. i think rain is way worse than snow. picking up the poop is no big deal.

in fact, i'm about to walk these mutts right now.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:33 (sixteen years ago) link

picking up poop vs cleaning cat box

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link

cleaning cat box is really easy when you have awesoem litter. i am in love with fresh step so much that mr. pike has renamed biff "DJ FRESH STEP".

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

generally, you just scoop the poop up with a trowel or a scooper and you're done. emptying out a big box filled with shit and urine-soaked clumps is way worse, imo. having to look after two giant cats who pooped about 9 times a day traumatized me.

lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i will never go back to other brands. /end free advertising

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

at least with the shitbox you don't have to go outside in the winter or carry a bag of poop with you. the box gets taken care of in 5 minutes.

i can't remember what kind of litter i use, it's the stuff in the orange boxes? my friends got some hippie shit that you're supposed to flush down the toilet.

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:40 (sixteen years ago) link

the crystal cat litter is the best. it absorbs the pee so it doesnt stink or get clumpy.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link

arm and hammer! yeah, i used to use that stuff. it's good, but the Fresh Step will Blow Your Mind.

It clumps like a dream.

(ewww)

I'm afraid of the flushable stuff. I've already had a world of misery re: plumbing in the place I'm in now. Nothing would make me want to revisit that hellish experience (our place is a new build, and the main sewage line collapsed - yeah, gross back up IN OUR KITCHEN).

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Walking a dog is way less gross than cleaning a cat box, esp. if you have a backyard. My brother bought a miniature septic system for his two dogs - just use a scooper to pick up the crap and drop it in the septic bucket.

milo z, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

i read an article awhile back that said it's illegal to throw away cat waste in the trash in my town? fuck that, no way i'm clogging up my toilet with that shit.

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

whaaa? that is absolutely bonkers.

also, good luck trying to find someone to enforce that law, town.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:47 (sixteen years ago) link

honestly, carrying a bag of poop is not that big of a deal. i don't really know much about cat boxes, but it's not a big whoop either way.

this trip outside was harrowing, on the other hand:

-- 15 year old cocker spaniel who cannot walk up/down 3 flights of stairs, needs to be carried
-- skittish shepherd mutt who hates rock salt because it hurts his feet
-- v v cold outside
-- ancient cocker decides that he doesn't want to walk anymore at all, sits down in the snow and refuses to move
-- forced to carry ancient cocker and drag skittish mutt up the 3 flights of stairs while trying not to slip/fall on snow/ice

the whole "taking them out" thing is not a big deal. it's the circumstances. our enemies are: mud, cold, ice, rain, rock salt.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

haha, you can take dogs to baseball games?

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

you can take them to the Sox stadium on "dog day"!!

La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

awwwh! i love them.

when my schnauzer max got old, he did the same thing. he would just park it, and refuse to deal with 2 feet of buffalo snow. i'd shovel paths for him b/c if he did try to forge the snow, he'd get stuck.

i think, though, walking yr dog and cleaning the shitbox is no big deal. i mean, it's your pet, and of course you're going to do it. you love the little buttheads.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

exactly. it sucks momentarily but then you realize that hey, they don't have thumbs/fingers and cannot get their own meals or poop hygienically. they need a little help. might as well help them, as they are helpless buttheads.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

do dogs like baseball?

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

mine did; he also got to parade around beforehand!

La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:12 (sixteen years ago) link

cats do a funny sweeping thing, esp. if some litter gets outside the box. my one cat gertrude can often be seen sweeping up around the box, trying to get the stray litter back home. it's cute. i always make sure to thank her for trying.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:12 (sixteen years ago) link

wow! my cats specifically kick litter outside the box. i have to sweep it up every day. they are bitches.
