help's dancefloor is full of callgirls. it's famous/infamous and if you're in rio already, you're probably heard of it by now.

note: i haven't actually been there or to even rio myself, but i hear it's way on the mark if you wanna like bargain and pick up a mulatta cutie for under 60 euros. why the f do i know this?

ONE 20 minute walk is not far, DV. There's just a series of them between landmarks that appear to be very close together.

is what i meant to say

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Ken, not sure. There was some scaffolding at the base where they're doing some restoration work. That might be what you're seeing the lower left foreground.

The museum pictures are great. #223 reminded me of a Bond villian's hideout.

#177 just amazes me.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:42 (eighteen years ago) link

It is *exactly* like a bond villain hideout! I'll have a few more of it tomorrow - it was a highlight, especially because of the views back to Rio.

The one that's my "favorite" is from the tram leading to Sugar Loaf. It was shrouded in cloud and it of course seemed heavenly - especially because once there, you were actually above the cloud and could still look down from it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:12 (eighteen years ago) link

waxyjax (waxyjax), Sunday, 12 June 2005 20:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I was just at the annual Portuguese festival nearby in Newark, NJ. Lots of vendors, people drinking out in the open and a happy atmosphere. I was kind of bored, though, because it was so...mellow... so during the parade I went off to one of the little side streets where a stage was set up with a BIG soundsystem and lots of younger folks wearing Brazil t-shirts hanging out by the beer/sangria/caipirinha vendors. This was the local Brazillian contingent (huge population and growing in Newark). I got to talking to a fine girl originally from Sao Paulo who told me to hang out until evening when it was "going to be fun". Everyone - including me - just hanging out in the sun getting drunk. I was already buzzed from 4 strong caipirinhas in the sun so I split shortly after. I'm sure it's going to go off there tonight. Here I am posting on ILE. Am I a dope?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 12 June 2005 21:35 (eighteen years ago) link

dude...i was actually planning on going to newark tonight to at this brazilian restaurant and had NO idea there would be some awesome festival! where exactly were you?

waxyjax (waxyjax), Sunday, 12 June 2005 21:58 (eighteen years ago) link

The festival was/is on ALL of Ferry St. (ends tonight around midnight). The Brazilian Independence festival is coming up in a couple of months. I'm definitely heading back for that. Sure it'll be waaay nutty.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 12 June 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

nice! i went to the brazilian independence festival in manhattan last year and it was weak. i'll definitely make mental note to check it out in newark this year.

I'd celebrate maybe watching this:

or

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svh-lGcSDmU <- documentary on the beginnings of the labor movement of the steel workers in São Paulo led by Lula. no subtitles, but it's pretty chilling
