I just looked at the New Jetta colors--they are so drab and they don't even offer red. So there is no way I am getting a New Jetta. I don't like how the New Jetta is more rounded and sedan like, I like the boxy Old Jetta.

I thought the Beetle would be a lot chepaer than the Jetta, bc: tiny, 2 doors, twee, but the standard package is just like 1,500 cheaper than a Jetta. Why?

I have a vague hankering for another "classic" SAAB 900, argh begone.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:35 (eighteen years ago) link

the Beetle is what's referred to as a "Boutique" car, eg they know you ain't buying it out of pragmatism or you'd just get a golf or a jetta. The thing IS a golf for the most part, just with an Xtreme Makeover applied and the $$$ to match.

Personally I think if I ever actually purchase an automobile again it will either be some kind of scarily pragmatic asian jobbie like I pictured above, or a Lotus Exige:

I currently drive an '03 Jetta (silver) which I love I had a very slick Audi A4 back during dot-com mania, but the payments and *insurance* were killing me. The new Jetta exterior is terrible and makes it look like it's trying to be a corolla, which is a nice enough car, but why do this to the Jetta?!

I'm thinking about another A4 in black this time next year, maybe two or three years old as the new one's (with the full "Auto Union" style grill) aren't really that special to me. I'm also considering the Prius and the Toureg (but only because the interior is so beautiful).

While the new Jetta's styling is a mis-step, the upcomig Passat is beautiful!

My ideal ride is probably an Audi A8L or S8, or an early seventies Charger or Challenger. I agree with Toraneko upthread about F1, but I also love Le Mans.

How do you guys get away with black cars in SoCal?

Try to park in the shade. Use windshield sunshade. Leave sunroof popped up. Sometimes leave windows cracked. Sear ass, backs of legs and hands on hot leather seats.

OH! I'm also considering the new Mustang, which isn't really my usual style of car, but it's so beautiful and seems to be an amazing value! I like the sort of charcoal metallic version. The interior has little odd bits and pieces, but the overall shape - especially the hood and front end - is sublime.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the Mustang is a good choice if you're looking for something to have fun in for a few years and then get rid of. it's cheap for a reason --- don't be surprised if it self-destructs at 80K miles or less.

The new Mustang is one of the few new cars I solidly like. Too bad the Ford dealerships have been nothing but asses about it - putting a $6000 to $7000 dealer "markup" on it and refusing test drives to people interested in the GT. I was able to test drive the V6 though and concluded that the GT is the only way to go - it'll pretty much pass anything except for gas stations.

Mary, the mini is a good car, estate agent associations aside. It's mini BMW with handling and build quality to match although I'd imagine it also has servicing costs to match a BMW as well. Built in Oxford by stout yeomem of Englande etc. It is a very small car though. Real adults can't really sit in the back, at least not for very long.

Do you get renaults in the states because a turbo Diesel renault megane might be right up your street. Quirky styling cheap to run, quite quick, easy to drive. Loads of room in the back and boot whilst still being a little smaller than a golf on the outside. My cousin and his wife have them and think they are great and I've had them as hire cars a lot and think a great deal of them. Also the safest in the class I think. They have a service interval of about 20,000 kilometers as well.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 07:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Aparently, mexico is the closest place you can get a renault. Oh well.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 07:28 (eighteen years ago) link

My family had a Renault for a few weeks in the '80s. It prompty broke down and we went back to our old German-car buying patterns. It is cute though, now that you mention it.

I'm disappointed that Jetta is no longer looking toward the youth market. They are trying to hold on to the youths who bought before but are now grown up and married--but what about the people who are still youthful?

Re the Mini: I'm sure it's a great car for dashing around the city, but I'm not sure it is a suburban dream. I've read reports that it is a bit sluggish to accelerate and can be a bit patchy on the open road. Also, the dashboard looks hella confusing to me.

I think the Golf could be a good compromise. Not particularly cute, but with a certain oafish charm. Cheaper than a Beetle (with more room) and less aspirational than a Jetta.

six years pass...

Maybe it's just the adjustment, but I had to take a rental for a few days and it's a Honda Fit and so far I fucking HATE driving this thing. Weird ass hatchback rear view, strange shape, handles weird, cannot get my spatial bearings whatsoever, driver seat sits uncomfortably. I feel like this thing was just invented to convince people to pay for the more expensive rental next time. I want my bougie accord back.

two years pass...
