Top two winningest NBA coaches, Lenny Wilkins and Don Nelson, both were NBA players.

serious question from someone with limited knowledge of nba history: has anyone been given a coaching job like kidd has and been successful? (define success however you want.)

fit and working again, Saturday, 15 June 2013 19:53 (ten years ago) link

do coaches usually walk into the job like that? no time spent coaching d-league teams or something like that?

fit and working again, Saturday, 15 June 2013 19:57 (ten years ago) link

can somebody tell me wth is going on with this doc rivers traded to the celtics bullshit

乒乓, Saturday, 15 June 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

xp Avery Johnson retired in like 2004 and was head coach within a year iirc. Was named Coach Of the Year in 2006.

vdn jumped straight to head coach and i think has actually been mostly ok, certainly not a disaster, though he probably could have used a couple of years as an ass't under someone

ilh favorite hand down man down went straight from broadcaster to warriors head coach and has remarkably been pretty good!

i do think kidd will actually be fine because the other straight-to-coach examples are similar- longtime veteran point guards mostly. he also has experience playing for some very good coaches which i think is really a thing, and he's going to bring lawrence frank with him, who was cursed with that garbage pistons roster the last few years but i think is very good

no clue really but it has broussard all over it which means it's not actually happening

though they are definitely talking abt kg & pierce b/c they (clips) are desperately trying to impress cp3 before july 1st, so i wouldn't be surprised if they were just like "hey we need a coach too, if you trade us those guys doc is just gonna bail and do tv, can we just take him too?"

if i were danny and it were really happening i would rake the clips over the coals for it, doc is his best asset at this point

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 15 June 2013 21:49 (ten years ago) link

xp yeah not knocking kidd at all, just that it seems weird to me that someone with zero formal experience gets employed in a position like that, particularly at a team with high expectations.

fit and working again, Saturday, 15 June 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

right, totally. as far as i can tell don nelson did it too- went straight to coach AND gm of the bucks! i think the pendulum is swinging more towards it lately b/c statistically brand new guys do about as well or better than retreads (i think there was a good zach lowe article on this recently), and someone along the way realized you can flip the role of asst coaches and use veterans there to shore up a new head coach versus using them as a training ground

i think we might have just also hit a saturation point by around 2010 where the retreads were fully retreaded and not going to go around again, a few possible guys coming up through the ass't ranks flunked out (iavaroni et al) and we're down to just a handful of proven veteran name head guys who are gonna cost a LOT to get in the seat (van gundys, phil), so there wasn't much downside to trying out some new blood

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 15 June 2013 22:43 (ten years ago) link

i would bet in kidd's situation his former coaches might also have chipped in and said basically what the heck is he gonna learn as an ass't that he doesn't know as a 40 year old veteran already

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 15 June 2013 22:43 (ten years ago) link

if they wanna try out new blood they should try importing some eurocoaches

i wanna be a gabbneb baby (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 16 June 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

Thinking that former players don't have an instant leg up coaching-wise is a really strange POV. Would love to see some aggregate winning% stats of former NBA players vs. non. Obviously being a former player isn't a definite prereq or anything (of the final four teams this year, three -- Spo, Vogel and Pop -- never played NBA), but former players have a massive bank of info to draw from that non-players can't really have access to.

Really looking forward to Kidd's first year-- feel like it could be really intriguing watching him develop Deron Williams, although outside of him and Lopez that Nets roster isn't much fun. Have absolutely no idea what to expect from Kidd coaching. BUT PLEASE JKIDD PLEASE PLAYER/COACH A FEW GAMES PLEEEEEEEASE. Kidd filling that spot just means one less team that'll snatch up Brian Shaw; amazing the chips haven't fallen his way for past few offseasons. Not as surprised by Ewing continually getting passed over, though.

And holy fuck these weird Celtics/Clips trades. When was the last time a coach was used as tradebait?

IM ME, I DO ME, AND I CHILL (CompuPost), Sunday, 16 June 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

i don't really even understand the argument about coaches--spo played pro ball in germany, pop played for the air force and tried out for the '72 olympic team, vogel played jv at kentucky. basically all coaches are "former players," i'm not so sure it's important what level they played at.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 16 June 2013 19:43 (ten years ago) link

my question on this was based on my surprise at kidd's appointment. i figured the head coach of an nba team would be expected to have spent several years being an assistant or coaching lower league and/or foreign teams, regardless of playing experience. it seems this is the case for most coaches, but there have been plenty of exceptions.

yeah. i think these days i'd rather have a dude who's been thinking about the game longer than he's been playing it

lol what does that even mean

The higher you ascend in terms of competition, the less likely it is you can get by without thinking about the game. A lot. NBA point guards ALL think about the game. A lot. No exceptions.

the whole idea of trading a coach is completely bonkers

Clay, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link

like this would only ever occur to two drunk people. no sober pair of gm's would have this idea.

Clay, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 21:09 (ten years ago) link

well they explain why tbf

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 21:19 (ten years ago) link

it is true that no one not on a basketball court should be wearing a basketball jersey, but the addition of sleeves isn't going to help things all that much.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 21:20 (ten years ago) link

let me know when a team starts wearing sports tuxedos

keyser saucy vagina (DJP), Wednesday, 19 June 2013 21:22 (ten years ago) link

it's also like, i don't think anybody who owns a basketball jersey was ever prevented from wearing one because they wanted to wear short sleeves instead... they just put on a white tee underneath the jersey

乒乓, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 21:40 (ten years ago) link

otm I'm not sporting a tight ass cap-sleeved game jersey

so the celtics trade rivers to the clips but the league isnt gonna let them move garnett too even in a separate deal figuring the teams will conspire to link the two
