u guys should check out my friend's awesome new camera app (not a game) called kitcam, it basically does everything you'd want a photo/video app to do in one app with a nice interface.

anyone tried xcom yet? $20 ouch.

If it's as good as the console, that's a bargain.

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 June 2013 13:47 (ten years ago) link

It's apparently the same game, modulo polygons and texture resolution and some of the cutscenes. But I just PS+'d it so I won't be trying the iOS version anytime soon.

I am thinking of finally upgrading from my iPad 1 so I can buy it. It seems like a great fit for the touchscreen

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

anyone interested in board games would do well to check out Agricola. It's $6.99 and well worth it. I've played the real life version a few times and they did a very good job with the conversion to iOS. it's probably best on a iPad but i just have an iPhone and it still works well.

for those who haven't played Agricola irl, it's a european-style board game (decent learning curve, strategic resource gathering decisions, you're looking for the most victory points at the end, etc) that has been near the top of boardgamegeek's list of greatest games for years now. it's a lot of fun!

Z S, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link

for people who just sort of dabble in those kinds of games but have only played settlers of catan - it's like settlers of catan but better

site note: every time i see Silby post i'm terrified that Morbs has found his way in here

Nhex, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

huh i didnt realize they did an agricola for the ipad.

i have it at home but no one ever wants to play with me cuz its pretty demanding

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

I think it just came out! For those who might be new and scurred to try, I would add that it has excellent tutorials.

Z S, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:57 (ten years ago) link

i was gonna whine about the $20 price tag, but eh, it's XCOM

Nhex, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:57 (ten years ago) link

if it were $20 on the mac i'd pick it up in a second. $50 for a copy of a game i already have on the 360 tho...

sad thing is that the PC version goes on sale <$15 all the time these days, but there's no crossplay Steam version

there's no cosplay version?

how is the computer opponent on agricola?

I got frustrated with Warhammer Quest cuz I really wanted my grey wizard to be a pure caster dealing damage and it wasn't gonna happen. Also the way it calculates XP screws AoE casters over.

All I want is a game where my mage gradually turns into Raistlin. Since I'm not into JRPGs, I guess I should get Baldur's Gate ...

Oh and Sorcery! is amazing. Felt like I was eight, reading 1st ed D&D manuals in a wicker chair.

blinded by aggro (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 8 August 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

ffs got up early to go for a swim, saw it was drizzling, frittered away two hours building space stations in rymdkapsel.

Fizzles, Friday, 9 August 2013 07:31 (ten years ago) link

I heard about rymdkapsel from a podcast yesterday but they didn't bother to spell out the title and I spent an irritating ten minutes trying to search for it before I gave up.

JimD, Friday, 9 August 2013 08:13 (ten years ago) link

rymdkapsel is very, very good.

for those who haven't played it, it's basically a streamlined resource management game. god, that makes it sound so terrible but it's really fun! the core resources are the reactor, which you can place anywhere) and the extractors, which must be connected to certain extraction zones that are placed throughout the map. those resources enable you to build other things, like the garden and kitchen, which generate food. food enables you to add more people to your crew (or replenish your crew when they die - more on that in a sec).

what drives the game and makes it exciting and tense are the alien attack waves that you have to periodically defend against. there's a countdown bar at the bottom of the screen that lets you know how long you have until the next invasion. in order to kill the aliens, you need to build weapon defense modules (which of course cost resources). you don't need to manually shoot at the aliens; you just assign your crew to the defense module. at first, the waves are really easy to beat, but as the game continues the difficulty really ramps up and the cyclical nature of the game really comes through.

broadly, the cycle is defend > expand your base > defend. on one hand, you're expanding your base so that you can generate additional resources so you can afford to feed more people and have more people to man the defense modules against the increasingly frequent and difficult waves of enemies. on the other, you're expanding your base to try to reach the four obelisks which are spread out in the four corners of the map. when you reach the obelisk, you can assign crew to research them. researching each obelisk takes a while, but it's essential because it gives you stat boosts (you can generate resources more quickly, or make your crew move more quickly, etc.)

so there's a nice tension between macro exploration (toward the obelisks and extraction zones that are spread throughout the map, and with the added element of tetris-like shapes that need to be strategically placed to maximize efficient exploration) and micro-management of the resources.

oh yeah, one last thing - the sound is EXCELLENT. there's a nice 5-6 minute ambient/drone loop that is pretty fantastic. i had the game on pause while i made lunch and enjoyed having the song on in the background. the graphics are similarly good. clean and simple, nice looking, very functional.

they really need to make a sequel and give it a better name. i think many more people would play it.

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 17:18 (ten years ago) link

i guess i could have just posted this instead:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsG95sWQiXw

one drawback - it's $3.99 (i think), and you'll "beat" the game in a few hours. there are 3 main objectives (build all the modules, survive to a certain wave, and research all the obelisks within 45 minutes), and once you finish that, you've beaten the game. if you're going to feel ripped off if you quit playing it after 3-4 hours, even if those hours were very enjoyable, then you should probably avoid it.

http://toucharcade.com/2013/07/31/rymdkapsel-review/

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I really like it but feels like I'm never going to get past wave 22 or so, I seem to get to a point where I can't replace dead crew members before the next wave hits. I probably just need a bigger crew before I get to that stage, plus better food processing placement.

And yep, music is fantastic.

JimD, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

yeah, i'm having the same problem. i still haven't beaten it yet, but i've gotten close and i assume others (mordy!) will annihilate it. during my last runthrough, i ran into strange issues with the AI. in some cases the crew was choosing to grab resources from the opposite side of the base even though there were available resources steps away. that obviously wasted a lot of time, especially when it came to replacing dead crew members. i didn't really notice that issue the first time through - hopefully it's not something that commonly occurs.

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:39 (ten years ago) link

nobody else on knightmare tower? I just finished and it was great.

blinded by aggro (forksclovetofu), Monday, 12 August 2013 19:45 (ten years ago) link

i plan on playing it soon, but i usually just play one game at a time, and whatever the name of the game i'm playing is seemed more appealing on first glance.

Z S, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:47 (ten years ago) link

i'm one of those losers who waits for a price drop. burrito bison was great tho.

currently playing Towelfight 2 which is a goofy dual-stick rpg-thing. I usually don't like dual-sticks but this one is goofy enough with enough weird weapons to keep my attention. They just released Quadroupus too, which is a rougelike arpg with some of the same gameplay feel.
