I didn't think it was their best. Could just be the sound mix, but the crowd seemed pretty unenthused too.

I'm halfway through it and it's better than most of their other live shows. Crowd response seemsv pretty on point too. Felt like Jonathan almost totally derailed the thing with his priceline.com thing, but they recovered pretty well.

i haven't heard it yet but the LA podcast fest show had dreadful sound, huge amounts of buzz, tinny, and mainly in the left ear. the whole POINT of these things is to celebrate audio so i really don't get how poor the audio quality is.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 June 2013 09:58 (ten years ago) link

even just mixing to mono would have improved the LA podcast fest episode immeasurably

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 June 2013 09:59 (ten years ago) link

I dunno if the point of UYD is to celebrate audio. Morelike to celebrate seeing George Wendt in the Sherman Oaks Whole Foods.

how's life, Thursday, 13 June 2013 10:07 (ten years ago) link

no, i meant the podcast fest. podcasts are audio. that's all they are. to have it recorded so poorly is just... like, what? okay.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 June 2013 10:30 (ten years ago) link

the normal eps of UYD are recorded impeccably, which is kind of amazing given how casual the whole thing is. but i guess jon's got a kind of audio engineer background of sorts.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 June 2013 10:30 (ten years ago) link

I haven't been to Denver in 5 years, but my main takeaway from my visit was Juggalos and Jncos, so I'm glad that that's still happening for them, I guess, and I'm glad the UYD guys got to witness.

how's life, Thursday, 13 June 2013 10:35 (ten years ago) link

sorry, I didn't mean audio quality, I meant they were kind of shitty and unfunny for most of it, they both seemed really off their game

jonathan's kidnapping routine made me wince, so did the gay dad ask amy

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Thursday, 13 June 2013 11:09 (ten years ago) link

I must have missed the kidnapping thing. Ask Amy is a tired bit. Bring back This Week in Florida or something, imo. Jonathan on issues of gender/sexuality/race: probably a bad idea in general.

how's life, Thursday, 13 June 2013 11:13 (ten years ago) link

like i said i haven't heard it yet but ime audio quality can have a profound and subtle effect on how something comes across

i also think that their show's strength is the intimate setting, you are almost literally in seth's living room sparking a bowl with these guys and cracking each other up; it feels weird to "share" that with an audience. like hey, these guys are supposed to be talking to ME not these jerks out in the audience!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 June 2013 11:16 (ten years ago) link

yeah totally

jonathan kind of seemed like he kept trying to push the envelope for the crowd, instead of engage with seth

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Thursday, 13 June 2013 11:23 (ten years ago) link

They had a pretty good connection to the audience in this one though. That's sorta been lacking in most of their live shows, I've felt. They were more confident and had better stage presence, particularly Seth.

how's life, Thursday, 13 June 2013 11:24 (ten years ago) link

Seth always seems a little overwhelmed by being up on stage. He gets all nervous. Jonathan usually copes with it by sorta half-assing it and being ruder than usual.

how's life, Thursday, 13 June 2013 11:25 (ten years ago) link

I almost always dislike live podcasts, but it's probably cool for the people in the audience. Think of them as bonus episodes or something

Yeah, they seem to deliver lesser returns across the board.

Nightline is fairly uncensored, since it usually airs around 10.30pm or later, and that particular entertainment segment which is broadcast near the end of the show has developed a self-consciously 'edgy', envelope-pushing style which has tended to allow language that wouldn't otherwise make it onto mainstream tv news. I was slightly taken aback with the mf bomb, but I've gotten used to that kind of language being uncensored whenever I catch the show. Tbh I'm more surprised that they seem to have paid for that reporter to travel to Denver to interview Seth and Jah. For a moment there I was like "wtf are UYD doing in NZ and how did I not know about it?!"

bi goose aka the skein divider (qiqing), Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

Also NZ TV is awesome and there is little bleeping.

franny glass, Monday, 22 July 2013 02:26 (ten years ago) link

Australia is the same. They would air a show like the sopranos on network tv but at 11:30pm where they could say 'fuck' and 'cunt' til the cows came home.

I love how pro-NZ seth is on the latest podcast and his vision of he and jonathon moving there, herding sheep and getting married. so great.

i finally figured out who sethro reminds me of. it's larry david! like, A LOT. another transfer to LA from the east coast.

I haven't heard this yet! I get excited whenever they mention NZ (which is like twice before now). I am surprised Seth was pro-NZ, he mentioned once that the accent gives him panic attacks lol

franny glass, Monday, 22 July 2013 17:51 (ten years ago) link

lol'ing at the thought of them ever visiting -- seth would have to be sedated with elephant tranqs and shipped in the cargo hold

but yeah it was pretty adorable how seth was giving big love to NZ

has seth ever been outside the states, or farther than mexico? haven't heard the latest ep yet, but i get the feeling they would either be whimsically romantic or patronising about it. i don't think enough weird stuff happens here for them to really enjoy it. they kind of feed off american culture in all its permutations. seth is totally in love/hate with the place, but i couldn't imagine him observing anywhere else with such disgusted fascination.

bi goose aka the skein divider (qiqing), Tuesday, 23 July 2013 01:01 (ten years ago) link

IIRC (and I possibly don't) he has mentioned a few times that he has a passport but has yet to use it.

I've been dipping back into the archives with my husband who's not heard them and we just did 60-69 over the last few days, an amazing run of episodes. Somewhere in the early 60s was the first mention of Facebook. Seth had to explain to Jonathan what it was, hee!

FYI that was one of the eps they filmed during recording and you can see it on youtube i think.

I nearly had to pull over to the side of the road during the football names segment.
