god if this thread didn't have 'weird shit' in the title i could have sworn it was a sebastien chikara joint

My ASMR triggers are hairdryers, vacuum cleaners and televisions on static channels, and I am often grateful for Youtube and the existence of videos of these sounds on a loop of 100 hours.

boxedjoy, Friday, 7 June 2013 07:03 (ten years ago) link

the internet is amazing, i take back anything i ever said about how it is no longer amazing

j., Friday, 7 June 2013 07:53 (ten years ago) link

Other phrases to describe the sensation refer to it as a "brain orgasm", "brain massage", "head tingle", "brain tingles", "head orgasm", "spine tingle", and "braingasm".[4][5][6][7][8]

This sounds like a lot of fun. I'm going to try it out when I get home, because I'm at work

the whole thing with people saying "omg i have that too!" when the scientific community is either staying silent or calling bullshit really echoes the trypophobia phenomenon

This is a really great thread.

sorry for spamming with newage frequency vids. just been thinking about that stuff and how it grows via the web.

I sympathize, though it were the hands/finger movements that really put me in a trance tbh

nb: i did not actually come at all watching that marbles video

Am enjoying these but can't fully let go of a fear that the next one I try will be a SCREAMER. :- (

Pyotr Ilyich Chai Latte (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 8 June 2013 19:27 (ten years ago) link

xp I used to use a freeware binaural beats program, and would always jump out of my seat when the super loud computerised voice would say "REMEMBER TO REGISTER" after 30 minutes.

the fear that the next one will be a SCREAMER has kept me away from every youtube that is supposed to help with meditation/relaxation/etc

i do not trust the internet to not want to fuck me up.

(snoball circa 2001) "oh, OK"

Trying to explain what this is, how it feels as someone who experiences it and what's out there on Youtube etc to people in real life is one of the most ridiculous things you can attempt to do.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 14 July 2013 19:29 (ten years ago) link

I don't have this but if you describe it to someone who does they instantly know what you're talking about. I hate them

Number None, Sunday, 14 July 2013 19:31 (ten years ago) link

That is very true! When I found out this thing had a name I posted about it on Facebook and a lot of people responded seemingly having a eureka moment, having never though to Google it or whatever. I get triggers less from people talking and more from electrical appliances - hoovers, lawnmowers, hair dryers, televisions on static channels - and a workmate used to really tease me for being a weirdo about it, then he realised why he loves going to the doctor and the barber, because the idea of this ~feeling~ was so immediately familiar when it was described to him.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 14 July 2013 19:46 (ten years ago) link

"now i'm going to brush the squash

that video is great & this guy's channel is amazing all round

Is anyone else sort of immune to the videos? I've experienced this feelinf all my life but something about the staged, artificial nature of the videos meant to trigger the sensation falls flat with me. Not to mention a lot of the whisper videos come across as overbearing and downright creepy. It only seems to work for me if it's organic I.E. not made with the specific intent to trigger ASMR.

i could never take any kind of "role play" seriously either

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

xp one of my friends has the same complaint. i get into it pretty easily for the most part, except for things like the gross eating videos

ogmor, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

If I put a vacuum cleaner on to do some cleaning myself I don't get it, but if I'm lying in my room and I can hear it through the walls I get it. The video loops of people hoovering for hours and hours work for me though.

I found it because I was reading Bob Ross's Wikipedia and it said his stuff was considered ASMR by some and I was like "wha?"

most of the authentic ASMRs are 20 minutes plus tho and what troll wd have the patience?

i think a lot of my favorite music & recordings trigger this for me. Morton Feldman definitely has before. A lot of noise & ambient & psychedelic rock stuff too. The Haters, New Blockaders, etc.

get this with the sonorous & moist speaking-voices of old people

actually I get it with Alpha Soixante so you can probably just edge away now while you still have a chance

This stuff is amazing. And one of the strange redeemable qualities of bad soap operas (quiet voices, sheet rustling)

I wish all of life sounded like this.

weird to imagine toddlers watching unboxing vids

nearly at the end of a long journey, very tired walking through the city centre listening to spotify's asmr selection

I am ready to accept the infinite abundance of the universe

This one is all time even though it’s very off the cuff. Doesn’t hurt that he’s a handsome guy who speaks my language but his hand gestures put it over the top.
