oh I get this!! mostly with the measured speaking voices of slightly sticky-throated old men as they plough through some choice literature

think the most profound example, though, is Alpha Soixante. hairs on neck, standin'

the music-y stuff reminds me of all sorts of deep listening, lowercase, field record-y stuff that is fantastic, need to start ripping some of these i think

the sound of writing also does this for me

yayyy thanks ilx

Ppl have been talking about neck-hairs standing and spines tingling in response to sounds forever, thank god someone finally came up with an entirely stupid name for it

Dig these vids tho, a friend hipped me to this last year but I'd forgotten it

somehow never heard the term lowercase before, this feels like a key discovery. what's amazing to me about the asmr stuff is that this entirely DIY medium has sprung up so quickly & on such a huge scale, & it's all mnstrm ppl w/ no connection to any of the underground stuff it's reminiscent of.

ogmor, Friday, 7 June 2013 00:47 (ten years ago) link

you need to find good youtube channels to follow. ppl w/ good microphones or whose voice you like &c. tempted to try and make a video.

Steve Roden is yr guy to check out for the world of lowercase

i think i might spend some time overlaying some of these ASMR soundtracks in Audacity

judging by his album covers I think I am going to be a fan. ubuweb is such a gold mine.

ogmor, Friday, 7 June 2013 00:56 (ten years ago) link

you should! keep it nice & clean, sparse. i remember ages ago dominique leone reviewed/enthused about a large & prohibitively expensive boxset of improvised electronic music from japan in which he described one of the tracks as sounding like someone gently sorting through some marbles in a drawer, which always struck me as a v enticing description, and now i can binge to my heart's content...

as far as the whisper people go, i have kind of a natural aversion to mouth sounds and when someone whispers in my ear i freak out a little. could never take that sinead o'connor a capella song where i can just hear her mouth and throat making noises. automatic writing DOES freak me the fuck out. but i'm all for field recordings of pencils and marbles. there are certainly a zillion avant garde records and CDs that do similar things and i dig those too. just remember you CAN try that kind of thing at home. anyone can make great ambient recordings with a decent recording device. its fun.

scott seward, Friday, 7 June 2013 03:10 (ten years ago) link

i dig solfeggio musiks but if you go down that youtube road you end up watching too many ben stiller skits that are not actually ben stiller skits. and then i kinda wiah i could just pick up some choice tunes at the newage store.

j., Friday, 7 June 2013 03:20 (ten years ago) link

My ASMR triggers are hairdryers, vacuum cleaners and televisions on static channels, and I am often grateful for Youtube and the existence of videos of these sounds on a loop of 100 hours.

boxedjoy, Friday, 7 June 2013 07:03 (ten years ago) link

the internet is amazing, i take back anything i ever said about how it is no longer amazing

j., Friday, 7 June 2013 07:53 (ten years ago) link

Other phrases to describe the sensation refer to it as a "brain orgasm", "brain massage", "head tingle", "brain tingles", "head orgasm", "spine tingle", and "braingasm".[4][5][6][7][8]

This sounds like a lot of fun. I'm going to try it out when I get home, because I'm at work

paolo, Friday, 7 June 2013 12:35 (ten years ago) link

the whole thing with people saying "omg i have that too!" when the scientific community is either staying silent or calling bullshit really echoes the trypophobia phenomenon

Am enjoying these but can't fully let go of a fear that the next one I try will be a SCREAMER. :- (

Pyotr Ilyich Chai Latte (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 8 June 2013 19:27 (ten years ago) link

xp I used to use a freeware binaural beats program, and would always jump out of my seat when the super loud computerised voice would say "REMEMBER TO REGISTER" after 30 minutes.

the fear that the next one will be a SCREAMER has kept me away from every youtube that is supposed to help with meditation/relaxation/etc

Trying to explain what this is, how it feels as someone who experiences it and what's out there on Youtube etc to people in real life is one of the most ridiculous things you can attempt to do.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 14 July 2013 19:29 (ten years ago) link

I don't have this but if you describe it to someone who does they instantly know what you're talking about. I hate them

Number None, Sunday, 14 July 2013 19:31 (ten years ago) link

That is very true! When I found out this thing had a name I posted about it on Facebook and a lot of people responded seemingly having a eureka moment, having never though to Google it or whatever. I get triggers less from people talking and more from electrical appliances - hoovers, lawnmowers, hair dryers, televisions on static channels - and a workmate used to really tease me for being a weirdo about it, then he realised why he loves going to the doctor and the barber, because the idea of this ~feeling~ was so immediately familiar when it was described to him.

Is anyone else sort of immune to the videos? I've experienced this feelinf all my life but something about the staged, artificial nature of the videos meant to trigger the sensation falls flat with me. Not to mention a lot of the whisper videos come across as overbearing and downright creepy. It only seems to work for me if it's organic I.E. not made with the specific intent to trigger ASMR.

i could never take any kind of "role play" seriously either

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

xp one of my friends has the same complaint. i get into it pretty easily for the most part, except for things like the gross eating videos

ogmor, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

If I put a vacuum cleaner on to do some cleaning myself I don't get it, but if I'm lying in my room and I can hear it through the walls I get it. The video loops of people hoovering for hours and hours work for me though.

A philosopher reflects on ASMR.

Joey Corona (Euler), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 14:13 (three years ago) link

The ASMR videos I most enjoy are intimacy porn. They elicit the pleasures of intimacy without the difficulties and burdens characteristic of its genuine instances—in short, those associated with the presence of another vulnerable, hungering person.

this articulates my experience
