I like this record a lot, even if sometimes it reminds me that point in the mid-90s where everyone was doing crunchy, dreamy guitar alt rock. Some of it is a bit "inside" for my taste (there's a particular moment where one of the guitarist does that "raking a pick behind the bridge" thing that makes me cringe (it's something Billy Corgan would do, for example).

Weird. I love that sound.

Really liking the new album, by the way.

I will have to wait till November to see them.

This is really good. I keep forgetting about these guys though, it's weird. I never really think I like them all that much, but whenever I do pull out their first album or the new, I find myself really liking it.

Oops, I actually meant their second album. I always forget they had one before Are the Dark Horse that I've never heard.

"devastation" is one of the most immense songs in a looooooooooong time

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 02:25 (ten years ago) link

This has almost completely missed out in the AOYL. It sounds pretty great to me (better all round than Are the Dark Horse but, perhaps, the highs aren't quite as high). Surprised it hasn't made it's presence felt a little more.

The version of 'Devastation' on the Casino EP crushes

I think the other two tracks on the ep are better, esp the last one (in the forest)

anyone know what instrument the new woman in the band plays, or who she is?

calstars, Wednesday, 25 November 2015 23:22 (eight years ago) link

She was playing keyboards, singing, and occasionally rattling a tambourine when I saw them last Friday. In addition to her name I want her mobile number.

Almost 8 minutes per track average sounds fantastic to me.

They have the oddest album titles

calstars, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 22:10 (three years ago) link

That's great. I tend to prefer them at their most succinct ("Albatross" 4ever) but didn't want that to end.

The other two Bandcamp tracks sound fantastic, excited!

Maresn3st, Friday, 29 January 2021 13:08 (three years ago) link

Got excited for a second, but my physical pre-order isn't due out until next Friday, so a little more patience required! I haven't checked out the latter two Bandcamp tracks yet, want to hold the rest to hear all at once. I've read some really glowing reviews already.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 29 January 2021 14:49 (three years ago) link

I realised that BL are pretty much how I imagine certain other bands to sound in my head when I read reviews, but then those bands generally turn out to be v dreary (post-Baker Mercury Rev, for instance) but Besnard Lakes deliver those cinematic psyche goods.

Maresn3st, Friday, 29 January 2021 15:11 (three years ago) link

one of those bands that does the same thing over and over but it doesn't matter because they're so good at it

Aside from the unfortunately terrible first track, their latest, thunderstorm, is really good. Parts of it are “propulsive” in one way or another but it still maintains a slowly dripping molasses quality
