Also, it seems from Facebook and Britain's Got Talent (!) that Addictive have split, which seems a bit of a shame, I would have liked to have heard their attempts to feature in this new wave of urban dance pop.

Hatching some plans see Hannah Wants, Deeper Love, Warehouse, London, SAT 22...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 30 May 2013 23:26 (ten years ago) link

Next month that is.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 30 May 2013 23:26 (ten years ago) link

i LOVE the sinead harnett single

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 31 May 2013 10:48 (ten years ago) link

also yeah this prob is the wrong thread but that new ikonika single is amazing yeah (as is the album)

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 31 May 2013 11:35 (ten years ago) link

Interesting there's so many competing threads of UK house at the moment. Everything seems to be sort of overlapping.

This Zinc tune has been knocking about for a few months but is worth an airing here as well.

The groove on that Sinead Harnett single is great but the over-enunciation in the chorus is even more irritating than the AlunaGeorge faux-glottoral stop. When did British singers stop being able to sing words properly?

Matt DC, Friday, 31 May 2013 15:27 (ten years ago) link

Ikonika is definitely not allowed in the treehouse though. Could've sworn she had her own thread but apparently not.

Matt DC, Friday, 31 May 2013 15:28 (ten years ago) link

god matt, it's not a competition with your typical male chauvinist boundary policing. all about the music man.

also i asked all my friends and they can't tell the difference between a house tune and a lute solo at a rave so up yours internet nerds.

Was thinking about all this when listening to the Disclosure album this morning and I suppose what unites a lot of this stuff is a kind of High Street pop realness (any high Street almost, certainly stretching across social classes), a spirit that's been kind of lacking in the last two waves of mainstream British pop. In a way that's distinct from the more self-consciously arty end of the spectrum and certainly from forced and half-hearted VIP area anthems.

Matt DC, Friday, 31 May 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

makes you Proud To Be British. pleased to be reunited with that zinc song.

ogmor, Friday, 31 May 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

xp yeah that works for me... even when mos blithely fold in ~deep house~ it's like, hairdresser deep

i am reminded of hot natured's 'reverse skydiving' and its excruciatingly/deliciously trashy lyric "rewind, timing / this be the contract for sky i'll be signing"

incidentally on that side of things this is a bit of proper summer anthem now

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2013/may/28/jackin-dance-music-bassline-uk

Read this the other day through Sreynolds' blog. This probably isn't the right thread for it, but how does jackin' relate to the UK house chart resurgence? Hannah Wants seems like one link, but are they separate things? Does it matter?

MikoMcha, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

that's kind of a hit n hope question really isnt it

r|t|c, Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:18 (ten years ago) link

this one apparently got to no 1 the other week and i hadn't heard of it until today when i looked back at the charts?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O1_3zBUKM8

i really love it

first heard of naughty boy when wiley/emeli sandé's "your woman" cover ended up credited to him

lex pretend, Monday, 3 June 2013 20:03 (ten years ago) link

The DEVolution remix is great. I think it's mentioned upthread somewhere. Also quite fond of the TS7 remix of Fuse ODG's "Antenna" (currently #7 on UK iTunes!)

there was also this excellent kidnap kid remix of their previous single last year. kk really is the man

r|t|c, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 08:47 (ten years ago) link

People need to stop putting this Sam Smith guy on things.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 08:51 (ten years ago) link

feel like kk's 'so close' might perhaps be underappreciated itt btw

r|t|c, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 08:51 (ten years ago) link

Like I dunno if he writes his own vocal lines but they've all got this ponderous Dev Hynes-Solange recorder lesson thing going on, he's most of what is wrong with 'Latch'.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 08:52 (ten years ago) link

gone right off his pubs as well

r|t|c, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 08:55 (ten years ago) link

i keep expecting to hear former british number one tennis player and current commentator sam smith, it's all very confusing

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 08:59 (ten years ago) link

bizarrely i like "latch" a lot more in album context

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 08:59 (ten years ago) link

'so close' is a beauty, love 'animaux' off that single too and his remix of 'waiting all night' is the best version I reckon.

Sam Smith sounds great on that Naughty boy song!

It really annoys me, When A Fire Starts To Burn is such an awesome (proper) opener and then you get this limp-dick faux-schaffel thing immediately afterwards.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 09:10 (ten years ago) link

interesting to note that Champion records is now rebranded for 2013 and releasing stuff like that great DrDr single 'Addicted'. Very apt when you see the awesome back catalogue.

nothing limp about "Latch" to my ears.. it did take awhile to, er, grow on me though

I love it so much, the percussive section in the final minute or so is O_O

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

presumably u are referring to the club mix?

it's alright tho, i tend to let one run onto the other and pretend it's an epic whole. and yes that bit is amazing!

r|t|c, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

Yeah the club mix

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 19:28 (ten years ago) link

I was thinking about how on earth this stuff ever ended up being called deep house given that it really doesn't sound that much like what has historically been called deep house. But then I realized its not the latest iteration of deep house, it's a reboot. Some clever marketing type somewhere decided to reboot deep house like star trek. Well done them.

bert streb, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 06:26 (ten years ago) link

it really doesn't sound that much like what has historically been called deep house.

Actually a lot of it does!

See also UK Garage, where people used to say "it doesn't really sound like US Garage", but, of course, a lot of the time stuff like Tuff Jam really did, whereas Artful Dodger much less so and Oxide & Neutrino not at all.

Tim F, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 06:54 (ten years ago) link

mainly for those who are hopelessly behind and need to catch up tbh. Lots of tunes from this thread.

do you have that in downloadable form somewhere?

give life back to usic (The Reverend), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 09:53 (ten years ago) link

(or else it just joins the other twenty tabs I have open to non-downloadable mixes that I may or may not ever get around to)

give life back to usic (The Reverend), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 09:54 (ten years ago) link

sorta surprised that the sophie track, much as i love it, fits into this

mixcloud's non-downloadable platform remains baffling

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:04 (ten years ago) link

Second the request for a downloadable version. Tracklist looks great.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:05 (ten years ago) link

The Sophie track totally fits into this, like I don't know anything about anyone involved in it but it's totally the right vibe.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:12 (ten years ago) link

I prefer the vocal version to the dub, mind, but there's little difference.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:13 (ten years ago) link

i guess just because i first heard of the sophie track via the glasgow crowd (jackmaster etc) who are a pretty different scene to both the london tastestep crew and your black butter/disclosure axis

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:18 (ten years ago) link

Looking forward to this mix (Benny B - your mixes are always great!).

I like that Mixcloud is "non-downloadable" because it means that it is streaming at a higher quality than e.g. Soundcloud, and of course it is very hard to make something non-downloadable, anyway.

toby, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:59 (ten years ago) link

it is seriously a matter of seconds to google a way to dl mixclouds ffs

乒乓, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 11:17 (ten years ago) link

I´ll stick it up for download on zippyshare or something tonight when I get back from work, I had no idea you could dl mixclouds tbh

Benny B, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 11:20 (ten years ago) link

(What r|t|c said.)

toby, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 12:01 (ten years ago) link

How about downloading stream-only Ministry of Sound radio sets? Anyone?

(excited to hear this Benny)

Also, re Kidnap Kid, was listening to "Animaux" again today and I just die every time the groove cuts out and that woman shrieks "DREAMER!"

Dude's approach to sampled vocals feels oddly reminiscent to me of how golden age uk funky used to do it, all those unnamed tunes like the ones on that hallowed Mak 10 / Shantie deja set or the tune that sampled Jagged Edge.

if you're just after the q sets then the show puts them up themselves

I like Kidnap Kid a lot and played the Alphaville EP loads last year but it would never have occurred to me to mentally group him with any of the rest of this stuff. I'd assumed he was a higher quality version of one of those blippy blog-friendly electronica types, partly because his stuff is so brightly-coloured and melodic (and more than a bit cutesy as well).

Also, this record sleeve:
