i think nocturne is great and this recent ep is doing v little for me tbqh, i would almost venture that it's his weakest set of songs

grange hermit crab (electricsound), Monday, 27 May 2013 22:19 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I mean I can understand people's feelings regarding the new EP vs. Nocturne, and why fans of one may not take well to the other... I mean, Nocturne is very much a one-sound kind of record (although it's a great sound), and the new EP is more all over the place... I'm finding myself liking both releases a lot for different reasons. I kinda hope he experiments further on his next full-length, actually, which I think would be great if he could come up with songs that were up to snuff!

I'd say that 'Ride' and 'Data World' were my highlights of this new EP... really love those two.

two years pass...

New album is sort of meh, but the opening track has some great xylophone-sounding synths and this track is absolutely stunning:

Haven't heard this
but

This is the kind of thread I like to see

starkiller based god (Treeship), Sunday, 7 February 2016 21:28 (eight years ago) link

They are real marimbas, not xylophone sounding synths. Get yer mallet instruments straight if you're going to talk shit.

Brad Laner, Monday, 8 February 2016 04:08 (eight years ago) link

i like the songs i've heard from the new record

ciderpress, Monday, 8 February 2016 04:10 (eight years ago) link

I stand corrected.

I haven't got around to hearing this yet, but thanks for sharing that McBoing-Boing, it sounds great and on first listen sounds like one of the best things he's done to date. I take it that the rest of the album doesn't quite match up to this?

The Dave Grohl of ILX (Turrican), Monday, 8 February 2016 21:23 (eight years ago) link

Right. The rest of the album isn't bad at all, but it's not as grab-you-by-the-collar as "To Know You".

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 8 February 2016 22:01 (eight years ago) link

I'll definitely still be checking it out, loved Nocturne and the EP that came after.

The Dave Grohl of ILX (Turrican), Monday, 8 February 2016 22:04 (eight years ago) link

You could tell from the first four or five notes of Nocturne that this was an artist transitioning from cassette indie to full-on Record Collection Rock. This is a good thing, and both Nocturne and the EP-that-nobody-can-remember-the-name-of were really excellent for their depth of texture and references.

The problem, for me at least, is that the thing Tatum appears to have spent the least amount of time synthesizing is the very thing he needed more than all those Berlin-era Bowie references: how to be an engaging singer with good lyrics and varied, compelling vocal delivery.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 10 February 2016 00:48 (eight years ago) link

Massive Carole King influence on this one. Also, he's managed to produce a cover tune of My Bloody Valentine covering Wire's "41ºN 91ºW" and also cover Foxygen's "How Can You Really?" one right after the other. More to follow.

fields of salmon, Friday, 19 February 2016 19:58 (eight years ago) link

something about Japanese Alice that reminds of Clientele in the best possible way

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 20 February 2016 02:37 (eight years ago) link

Hrm I hear "for love" by lush in Japanese Alice.

lol @ "Reichpop" as a title, but it sounds amazing

anything as good as this on the new album?

Nope. That was a real high point for me.

fields of salmon, Saturday, 20 February 2016 14:33 (eight years ago) link

Album has a nice Supertramp vibe to it.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 20 February 2016 19:31 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, so having listened to the whole album twice now, I find it pleasant but mostly forgettable. :/

jaymc, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:17 (eight years ago) link

It's better than Gemini but not Nocturne.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:26 (eight years ago) link

agreed

ciderpress, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:39 (eight years ago) link

this has grown on me in the past couple days, solid record. still much prefer nocturne though

ciderpress, Monday, 22 February 2016 14:03 (eight years ago) link

Also, as much as I like it (listened to it probably a dozen times it is not what I expected the record to sound like after Empty Estate?

erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 22 February 2016 15:23 (eight years ago) link

probably a dozen times over the weekend... that should have read.

enjoying this new "shallow water" song

this guy is still my favorite Unremarkable Indie Pop act going

ciderpress, Sunday, 12 August 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

I still have a lot of time for Nocturne and the Empty Estate EP. The last album had some great moments too, although was a bit uneven on the whole. I can't get into Gemini much.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 12 August 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link

Nocturne is great

Abomination Street (Ross), Sunday, 12 August 2018 21:57 (five years ago) link

I adore the golden haze ep

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 12 August 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

Life of Pause ended up being my favorite of his, and the new tracks are super promising.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 August 2018 03:23 (five years ago) link

yeah "letting go" is real good too and "partners in motion" has a nice groove

ciderpress, Monday, 13 August 2018 03:27 (five years ago) link

When the mid 80s were over, I really missed the guitar sound in "Partners in Motion" (and in places on the Tornado Wallace album from last year) and I'm overjoyed it's finally okay to make a guitar sound like that again—because it wasn't for a very long time, unless you were recording elevator music.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 August 2018 03:31 (five years ago) link

its just chorus and reverb i think

ciderpress, Monday, 13 August 2018 03:44 (five years ago) link

There's something really crystalline and compressed about it beyond chorus.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 August 2018 03:47 (five years ago) link

sounds like they've been having a good listen to Songs from the Big Chair

com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 13 August 2018 03:55 (five years ago) link

there's still a few songs left in that chair

ciderpress, Monday, 13 August 2018 03:57 (five years ago) link

I'd assumed these were all leading up to an album, but cool! It comes out on the 31st!

i like that cover art, though i'll always enjoy the life of pause one for looking to me like he's sitting inside a set from a Myst game

ciderpress, Monday, 13 August 2018 05:28 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I like that cover art too... would have made a great vinyl sleeve circa 1983-1984.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 13 August 2018 13:30 (five years ago) link

jorge elbrecht produced this new one

calstars, Monday, 13 August 2018 13:36 (five years ago) link

xp according to photo on the Bandcamp page, the shape on the front is a transparent window.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 August 2018 15:01 (five years ago) link

Every time I listen to the Empty Estate EP, I find myself wishing he'd expanded that to a full length.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 13 August 2018 17:58 (five years ago) link

It is a full length what the hell are you talking about

fields of salmon, Friday, 24 August 2018 01:53 (five years ago) link

When the mid 80s were over, I really missed the guitar sound in "Partners in Motion" (and in places on the Tornado Wallace album from last year) and I'm overjoyed it's finally okay to make a guitar sound like that again

This is probably why I am really feeling this new album

It's an EP, not an LP - I would have thought that was apparent.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 2 September 2018 08:45 (five years ago) link

Sounds like the new one is going to be right up my street!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 2 September 2018 08:47 (five years ago) link

really enjoying this so far. it feels like he took lessons from Life Of Pause (which i wasn't super into and he, from interviews, doesn't sound like he quite was either) and just applies those sophistipop tendencies to his usual soundscapey popcraft.

austinb, Monday, 3 September 2018 01:39 (five years ago) link
