Unless you are a girl, in which case, substitute "the guy playing Mitchell"

Lauren is v.v. pretty. And I am being all heterosexual in my assumptions there.

ailsa, Sunday, 15 February 2009 22:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Best episode yet as well - it's obviously building towards some really bad shit but all the characters are very watchable.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Sunday, 15 February 2009 22:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Best episode yet, definitely. It has to start building up to the bad shit now, because there's only two more episodes left; there needs to be a doomtastic cliffhanger next week.

We were cringing and could barely look when the kid started playing the DVD. The most chilling moment: his "I'm hungry" while waiting for the train at the end.

Forest Pines Mk2, Sunday, 15 February 2009 22:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, that was excellent tonight. It's been really good so far, but is ratcheting it up towards something outstanding.

Oh yeah, i'll never not laugh at family guy, i just wish BBC Three would keep up with the episodes.

Ahhh! Just realised, maybe i shouldn't download everything and moan i've seen it when it comes on TV :(

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 23:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm now firmly on the Being Human bandwagon thanks to you guys and the iplayer. The scripts and acting are a bit rough around the edges, but it's very compelling and the small budget is used cleverly.

The comedy/drama tag is somewhat misleading - it's a good deal darker than I expected!

chap, Thursday, 19 February 2009 00:37 (fifteen years ago) link

In fact I was going to turn in, but I think I'll watch episode four first.

chap, Thursday, 19 February 2009 00:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Any further thoughts on Being Human now that it's finished? I was impressed on the whole, despite it feeling a little over-written and over-acted at times (having said that, the guy who played Herrick hammed it up something rotten and he was the best thing in it). It was in the spirit of early Doctor Who, offbeat genre television that relies on clever storytelling rather than flashy SFX. It also reminded me of a 90s Vertigo comic, I kept half expecting John Constantine to show up. Here's hoping it gets recommisioned.

chap, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

And wikipedia tells me it has, for an eight-part series.

chap, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:30 (fifteen years ago) link

The finale made even less sense than the preceding episodes but overall it was pretty good. But I could really do without that relentless post-Spaced excruciating-middle-class-tics-of-embarrassment style of acting - even the vicar or whatever did it!

Stevie T, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I agree, I think they should play down the comedy elements and focus on the supernatural drama next time.

chap, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I was a bit disappointed by the finale, thought they tried to cram a bit too much into the first half. The comic stuff mostly worked I thought but George got most of the best lines.

Roque Santa Gold (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago) link

No way they should lose the comedy! I'm glad it's less tongue in cheek than Buffy but the humour is very much at the heart of it. I thought it was great, in fact maybe one of the best new uktv series in years. They really managed to do something fresh with the genre.

ledge, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 22:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think they should lose the comedy altogether by any means. I just think less pop-cult referencing clowning around might be in order.

chap, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Also George annoys me a bit when he goes all squeaky.

It's Angry Boys, by the Australian guy who did Summer Heights High. So it's not racist, it's a well-observed sideways swipe at illiberal modern society, obviously. Or something.

possibly more worrying is that bbc three appears to be using the same criteria for its editorial decisions

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 10 December 2014 13:32 (nine years ago) link

do people even make distinctions between things that get ppl's attention and make them click because they are horrified versus because they are excited?

not that i shared that shit of course

"CBBC will close early"

there would have been riots if they treated CBEEBIES with such contempt!

calzino, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:44 (three years ago) link

but cbeebies closes at 7, the same frequency is used for bbc4 after that.

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:48 (three years ago) link

yeah but I presume they are still cutting some of the broadcasting schedule off CBBC if they are closing it earlier?

calzino, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link

not that I watch CBBC but my son does sometimes.

calzino, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:54 (three years ago) link

CBBC goes on till 9pm just now! A child would kick a ball in the street etc.

Punk's not daft (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:55 (three years ago) link

they need to move with the times and run the closing "now it's time to say goodnight at the end of a lovely day" song at 2am!

calzino, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:58 (three years ago) link

cbbc is on too late, it's true, I support all kids' TV being turned off at 8pm, also the internet if possible.

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:59 (three years ago) link

They don't even have enough stuff to fill up the time, they just endlessly recycle the same programmes. Meanwhile CITV have given up completely and just show cartoons.

Alba, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 16:07 (three years ago) link

I'll admit I am mystified by what a TV adaptation of Normal People could possibly bring to the table; literary fiction based around the inner lives of its characters seems a very bad fit for adaptation unless you go experimental with it.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 17 May 2022 10:00 (one year ago) link

I thought Normal People worked really well, but I hadn't read the novel.
