To this day I regret not getting a photo of WilliamC's face when he tried a durian popsicle in the Uwajimaya parking lot.

Jaq, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

No pineapple or durian on my pizza please, btw. Though if it's all that's left, I won't say no to a slice.

Jaq, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link

my durian experience: smelled terrible, actually tasted really good, but the real problem was the texture. impossible to chew/bite, you just had to swallow at some point, same reason i can't deal with tripe.

Mr. Jaq's face was equally priceless when he tried the durian popsicle! I could see him really wanting to like it, but after a few seconds he just caved. Maybe like being in a heavy BDSM scenario and having to use the safe word. "Damn it, I thought I could take it!"

xp

WilliamC, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

durian is p dope, its one of those foods like truffles or oysters that work on some other deeper level

lag∞n, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

To be fair, that popsicle was probably artificial durian flavor made from condensed sewage vapors and rancid butter. Xp

I still don't really want it on my pizza.

Jaq, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

xp The 'I can't believe I'm eating this really gross thing but it cost a lot of money so I'm going to have to' level?

Dear "people" who profess to like pineapple on pizza: On a cosmic level you are being punished for your sins. But if you don't want to contemplate the implications, go ahead and eat your crime against pineapple.

Word Salad Username (j.lu), Friday, 24 May 2013 17:27 (ten years ago) link

stopped enjoying this after I stopped eating meat. feel like the pineapple needs cured meat to offset it.

It's the cured meat's salt set against the pineapple's sweetness and mild acidity that people are responding to mostly.

Aimless, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

I would never order pineapple on a pizza, but if it were served to me & I was hungry, I'd totally chow down on it.

now if we were talking scallops...

Euler, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link

I don't eat meat. Still love pineapple pizza. Actually, went to a pizza party a few weeks ago with a group that was probably 60/40 meat-eater/vegetarian split and the pineapple-only pizza was the overwhelming favorite.

how's life, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:44 (ten years ago) link

There are few pizzerias who overload the pizza with pineapple, I can understand not liking that. It is perhaps a difficult balance, but once it hit the spot it is amazing if you don't like it you shouldn't have rights etc

Just as I don't pepperoni. Why not use real italian sausage instead of industrial garbage?

durian tastes nice once you get past the smell, and it's true, if you have it semi-frozen the smell isn't so bad.

someone upthread mentioned andouillette -- i've only read about it and seen pictures, but i think i will give a WIDE berth to that one.

leno dunham (get bent), Friday, 24 May 2013 19:41 (ten years ago) link

stronger in scent when the colon is used

...think I'll be skipping that one. Colon on my pizza is going too far.

All have a strong, distinctive odor related to their intestinal origins and components. Although sometimes repellant to the uninitiated, this aspect of andouillette is prized by its devotees.

lolololol

The French parliamentarian Edouard Herriot and Mayor of Lyon once said talking about the "Andouillette de Troyes"; "Politics is like an andouillette – it should smell a little like shit, but not too much."

I looooooooooooove andouillette.

"La Politique, c'est comme l'andouillette. Ça doit sentir la merde mais pas trop."

Euler, Friday, 24 May 2013 19:54 (ten years ago) link

it doesn't smell that much usually. just enough that you know what you're eating.

I mean, if you eat hot dogs...

Euler, Friday, 24 May 2013 19:57 (ten years ago) link

I do not eat a lot of hot dogs tbh

and, when I do, they have been processed so much that they don't smell like shit

Andouillete is one of the three sort of meat that I miss since I became a vegetarian, along with foie gras and merguez.

Tbs, it doesn't make much sense on pizza.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 24 May 2013 20:00 (ten years ago) link

andouillette on pizza would be hilar

was gonna link to photos of examples but it reminded me of why one is best off avoiding pizza in France

Euler, Friday, 24 May 2013 20:04 (ten years ago) link

I would try a foie gras pizza, mostly because lol

Am I going to have to tell you all about the greatest pizza in Europe? It won a continent-wide award, and I ate it, for 7 euro and 50 cents. It was every bit the hype.

Its primary topping was cured pork fat.

scientist: ... confused look... "absolutely not."

Every pizza thread on every chat board i've been on (and folks, i've been on them all ;) ) there's always the moment when the pizzafuckers arrive. Welcome sir!

waterface, Friday, 24 May 2013 21:35 (ten years ago) link

Those balls of corruption got no place on pizzas, that is horrible. Pineapple is fine !

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 24 May 2013 21:36 (ten years ago) link

in my experience green onions are not slimy, etc. on pizza - they're not cooked before hand, just tossed on raw, so they dry out, get a little singed maybe - very flavorful

is there meat somewhere on that egg pizza?

j., Friday, 24 May 2013 21:40 (ten years ago) link

i love leeks on pizza -- just the white part, finely chopped

leno dunham (get bent), Friday, 24 May 2013 21:47 (ten years ago) link

the greenish-white part, not the white-white part.

leno dunham (get bent), Friday, 24 May 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link

oh damn i'd so love a florentine pizza right now

r|t|c, Friday, 24 May 2013 22:15 (ten years ago) link

I had an awesome pizza with leeks on it too. Need to start cooking more with leeks. leeks leeks leeks

whoever made that egg pizza should have a drone sent to their house and a photograph of their respective head of state grinning, thumbs aloft, next to the charred remains of their house printed on their tombstone.

That's what I was talking about upthread, the runny egg on top of the pizza! I had this in Bordeaux and it's great, I swear to God.
