feel like one of those LHC naysayers, except the resulting event horizon will be only too real. don't risk it, dan

OH NO, SECONDS LEFT, SECONDS LEFT, AND THERE IT IS. REGRET. (imago), Friday, 24 May 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

the only pizza pp and I eat is canadian bacon and pineapple, unless the kids have insisted on pepperoni

US pizza vs Australian pizza offerings are two completely different things. Australia is all specialty pizzas and US just goes by number of toppings and is obsessed with how many different cheeses are on there and how many different places they can find to stuff that cheese into. Its so weird.

I can see how people would not enjoy pineapple on a pizza. The sweet with the savory just doesn't work sometimes. For me Maple syrup on bacon and eggs is something I will never understand.

why not just top it off with gummi bears you visigoths

Or go from the opposite direction, and add bacon to an Oreo pizza.

or just go totally hardcore and get a durian pizza

Or get a salt shaker and a sugar dispenser and pour them both into your mouth at the same time.

Cheese and durian doesn't seem that much different a combination to, say, Wensleysdale cheese with cranberries in it.

all I know about durian is that the stunt eater dude with the "Weird Foods" show who has eaten hella genitals and bugs said it was the one thing he just couldn't bring himself to eat

i've had durian it's p good

乒乓, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link

is it true that it smells like rotting meat? or does it just smell like feet?

salak is a fruit that smells like old gym socks (the skin does, at least)

http://i.imgur.com/kOzcmK6.jpg

i wouldn't say that durian smells like either rotting meat or feet. it definitely has a pungent smell. i think maybe some people are genetically predisposed against the smell of durian, kinda like cilantro. i dunno though.

i've been told that there are a few dozen varieties of durian, and only some of them smell really bad.

the ones you get in the states have been frozen and shipped overseas, so they're not fresh, i'm also not sure which varietal is used.

乒乓, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:28 (ten years ago) link

the texture of durian is like a really ripe, creamy avocado

乒乓, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:32 (ten years ago) link

Everything about that description gives me a gross-out attack. Also are you sure that jpg is of a fruit because I think it might be a pangolin.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Friday, 24 May 2013 15:37 (ten years ago) link

what are other fruits with texture like avocado? I feel like there must be a bunch out there. like mango doesn't do it b/c it's too stringy.

Euler, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:39 (ten years ago) link

to me, the smell is like... a bit open sewer sulphurous, fading to a sweet rotting wood and a rich, spicy fruit smell like overripe bananas, white pepper-- i just walked over to the fridge for the third time to resmell that smell and i can't even get close to describing it. i think the sewage smell is the most unpleasant element of the scent. when you first crack into one, it's a bit overpowering.

if you're in north america, eating frozen durian, let it thaw very briefly and eat it still frozen.
no smell,
just frozen very delicately fibrous durian custard.

dylannn, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:39 (ten years ago) link

pineapple on pizza is fucked up.

dylannn, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:39 (ten years ago) link

i've had durian and i wouldn't have compared its texture to avocado, i thought it was much closer to other melons or mango especially

ciderpress, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:41 (ten years ago) link

also it didnt smell that bad but i didnt experience cracking it open, just ate some chunks out of a container that was in my friend's fridge

ciderpress, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:42 (ten years ago) link

throw some andouillette sausage on that durian za and u got urself a party

r|t|c, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

I love sweet and salty. Mascarpone-cheese on pizza is awesome. I just don't get why you would put pineapple on it to get that taste. The texture is awful, it gets wet and sticky. It's not worth it.

Just as I don't pepperoni. Why not use real italian sausage instead of industrial garbage?

Frederik B, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:48 (ten years ago) link

Because it's pizza!

llama del rey (Leee), Friday, 24 May 2013 15:49 (ten years ago) link

The answer is fennel seeds. Fennel seeds are why not to use Italian sausage.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Friday, 24 May 2013 15:49 (ten years ago) link

D'oh. Was supposed to say 'Just as I don't get that gross godawful attempt at sausage called pepperoni. Stupid phone.

Frederik B, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:50 (ten years ago) link

the nice men in the takeaways in Hull only offer industrial garbage, will suggest they start using artisanal meat sourced from Italian wholefood collectives in future

...Or does it smell like rancid spam? Tell me, tell me, Sam-I-Am!

To this day I regret not getting a photo of WilliamC's face when he tried a durian popsicle in the Uwajimaya parking lot.

Jaq, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

No pineapple or durian on my pizza please, btw. Though if it's all that's left, I won't say no to a slice.

Jaq, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link

my durian experience: smelled terrible, actually tasted really good, but the real problem was the texture. impossible to chew/bite, you just had to swallow at some point, same reason i can't deal with tripe.

precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Friday, 24 May 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

Mr. Jaq's face was equally priceless when he tried the durian popsicle! I could see him really wanting to like it, but after a few seconds he just caved. Maybe like being in a heavy BDSM scenario and having to use the safe word. "Damn it, I thought I could take it!"

xp

WilliamC, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

durian is p dope, its one of those foods like truffles or oysters that work on some other deeper level

lag∞n, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

To be fair, that popsicle was probably artificial durian flavor made from condensed sewage vapors and rancid butter. Xp

I still don't really want it on my pizza.

Jaq, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

xp The 'I can't believe I'm eating this really gross thing but it cost a lot of money so I'm going to have to' level?

go cray cray on my lobster soufflé (snoball), Friday, 24 May 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

Dear "people" who profess to like pineapple on pizza: On a cosmic level you are being punished for your sins. But if you don't want to contemplate the implications, go ahead and eat your crime against pineapple.

Word Salad Username (j.lu), Friday, 24 May 2013 17:27 (ten years ago) link

stopped enjoying this after I stopped eating meat. feel like the pineapple needs cured meat to offset it.

It's the cured meat's salt set against the pineapple's sweetness and mild acidity that people are responding to mostly.

Aimless, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

I would never order pineapple on a pizza, but if it were served to me & I was hungry, I'd totally chow down on it.

now if we were talking scallops...

Euler, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:43 (ten years ago) link

I don't eat meat. Still love pineapple pizza. Actually, went to a pizza party a few weeks ago with a group that was probably 60/40 meat-eater/vegetarian split and the pineapple-only pizza was the overwhelming favorite.

how's life, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:44 (ten years ago) link

There are few pizzerias who overload the pizza with pineapple, I can understand not liking that. It is perhaps a difficult balance, but once it hit the spot it is amazing if you don't like it you shouldn't have rights etc
