New Jack Rose album? (Dec 2009: RIP Jack Rose)

I suppose red horse was the first solo piece he released? arrives perfectly-formed. that bit ~1.20-1.50, gaaaah. mb the only thing that withstands comparison to the great san bernardino birthday party. it was always a beautiful, melancholy piece but it feels so sad now.

I wonder how much of this (Red Horse)was improvised? Some of it is so damn good it is hard to imagine it being so, but it seems a lot of times pieces this long are "loosely structured" so say the least. I gotta say, that interview in Arthur was really enlightening, just full of cool details. Like I said, I gotta get more Jack Rose records.

Sad doesn't even begin to describe the feeling. The way he pushed himself, and the run he was on, made it pretty evident that he had some tremendous things ahead of him. Just a shame, but at least he got a pretty decent amount out whilst charging ahead.

Yeah I have that. Pretty lo-fi (in both sound & packaging) CDr. Don't recall if I got it from Volcanic Tongue or Rough Trade.

That interview is great. There is a Coley rundown of Rose's recordings in that issue as well I believe, which is also great.

played raag manifestos again the other day after listening to kevin drumm's sheer hellish miasma. hart crane's old boyfriends still sounds like staring into a black hole & i really miss that playing & the attitude behind it

I need to go on a Rose listening spree. He was quite an individual, can't believe I missed him when he played here.

i saw him play on new year's eve in knoxville just under a year before he died. during his set, power went out, he played on. most of the crowd seemed to be more buzzed for local band for which rose was opening; a bit too much talking during his set for my taste, especially since he wasn't amplified for most of it. i was totally spellbound though and bought a bunch of stuff from him and chatted afterward. i had only discovered him in 2005 or somewhere around there. my partner had been a pelt fan for longer. his death came as a total shock to me; it was horrifying. he was only a few years older than me.

i think i still have that nice&nasty comp on itunes. email me to remind me and i'll look it up when i get home.

actually i think it was new year's day (night).

Almost five years now. Dammit.

listened to raag manifestos a few nights ago and wow -- i obviously like/love a lot of stuff that has come in Rose's wake in the past few years, but the dude towers pretty high above 'em all.

Man I wish I could go to that. I imagine that is going to be a very heavy but musically super-rich evening.

ha, i don't know -- i just assumed it was going to be a collab between all the guys playing.

I think they play periodically, see them on bills now and again. Maybe it is a Philly thing, i.e., a crew gets together to jam for momentous occasions? Sometimes Philly seems like the nexus of my musical universe, wish it was a little closer.

been heavy into this lately & absolutely loving it, esp his ragtime/old timey stuff has gone from being my least to most favourite. some combination of playing/thumbpick/micing on kensington blues makes the bass on tracks like flirtin with the undertaker bludgeon the song to death a bit, but dr ragtime & his pals sounds awesome and is pure joy

really enjoyed the remembrances, the points about his craftsmanship & attention to sonic details are very otm, and the bachman stuff in particular is v sweet and chimes with my starry-eyed memories of meeting jack

also just want to bask in this magnificent sentence again:

His ragtime songs were so powerful and executed with such precision and might that even “hipsters” got it.

the stuff about him 'owning' everything he did rang true, and makes me think more about how confidently and fruitfully he followed fahey, thriving in his shadow, following him upriver deep into the mountains in such of the source. watching some of his performances on youtube it's incredible how much he looks & dresses like fahey, as if his quest had started transformed him physically, presumably starting at that mighty right hand. and yeah, it's great to hear sundogs again, was a truly awesome piece to hear
