I loved the chaotic-shelf video game rental experience, especially given that the huge number of NES titles meant that going with your friend to the place their Mom usually took them meant an entirely new, weird selection of games. No rhyme or reason - seemingly high-profile things would be quite scarce. I remember the only time I played TMNT: Manhattan Project, it was rented from a Stein-Mart at a mall I never otherwise frequented.

yeah, if you REALLY dug in you could often find some real high-profile games jammed into a corner where some kid hid them to save for later. I think that's how i finally played startropics.

woah, missed this - way to go closing that mystery out after 4.5 years!

flipside of the rental experience is, obviously, bringing home impenetrable impossible crap where you couldn't get past the first level and it suuuuuuucked. I have had many people defend "Legendary Wings" to me over the years but I cannot shake the sad, hot summer day's memory of just being frustrated to death and having nothing on which to direct my rage.

i was terrible at legendary wings, but i used to a watch a friend (who was great at it) play all the time. i think the music was pretty nice?

nope, but you are on to something re: theme. it might be a criminally neglected game for all i know, but i can vouch for it being totally awesome.
