Seems they are making quite a natural soothing experience into a big thing tho, no?

Yeah those videos are insane.

this came up in a class I was teaching two months ago; a student had made a piece of musique concrete. after he played it, the whole class was sucked into the vortex going through youtubes of this for about 15 minutes. it's one thing to be sitting at a computer being intimately whispered to, it's another to have it amplified loudly through a class PA and experiencing it theater-style with 20 other kids

it's definitely onto something

two weeks pass...

i was about to start a thread on this, ~whisperers~ i love this stuff. all these ppl practising the art of gentleness, producing these peculiar hypnotic folk noise videos with extreme care. i've had this sensation for years, i remember a childhood piano teacher set them off in a major way, & it's amazing to find this huge online community producing all this stuff. i respond to quite a lot of this stuff, but i love how specific some ppl's triggers are; one of my friends only really gets it w/ paper sounds/page turning. there's loads of things on youtube that border on this too - certain pronunciation videos, games tutorials, hypnosis vids - the format is perfect for it. otoh there's something odd about these extremely meticulously produced homages to the sensory properties of objects/sounds&c., which are then digitized & broadcast to a totally passive audience.

anyway, i get the tingle, the videos do have an addictive quality, but i have no idea what's in it for the people who produce them. some of them are outrageously prolific, uploading dozens of videos a month, and i'm not clear what kick they get out of doing their role-plays &c.

the overlap w/ music is interesting to me. especially w/ solo instrumentalists & free improv. it's a shame most of the asmr stuff has such bad sound quality. listening to some toshimaru nakamura atm & it's not far off at all.

ogmor, Friday, 7 June 2013 00:07 (ten years ago) link

would be so amazing to see an asmr film in a cinema. there could be specialist theatres for them, rather than seedy porn cinemas they'd be very clean, well-maintained, tastefully decorated, staffed entirely by whispering ushers who would take great care ripping your ticket.

somehow never heard the term lowercase before, this feels like a key discovery. what's amazing to me about the asmr stuff is that this entirely DIY medium has sprung up so quickly & on such a huge scale, & it's all mnstrm ppl w/ no connection to any of the underground stuff it's reminiscent of.

you should! keep it nice & clean, sparse. i remember ages ago dominique leone reviewed/enthused about a large & prohibitively expensive boxset of improvised electronic music from japan in which he described one of the tracks as sounding like someone gently sorting through some marbles in a drawer, which always struck me as a v enticing description, and now i can binge to my heart's content...

as far as the whisper people go, i have kind of a natural aversion to mouth sounds and when someone whispers in my ear i freak out a little. could never take that sinead o'connor a capella song where i can just hear her mouth and throat making noises. automatic writing DOES freak me the fuck out. but i'm all for field recordings of pencils and marbles. there are certainly a zillion avant garde records and CDs that do similar things and i dig those too. just remember you CAN try that kind of thing at home. anyone can make great ambient recordings with a decent recording device. its fun.

scott seward, Friday, 7 June 2013 03:10 (ten years ago) link

i dig solfeggio musiks but if you go down that youtube road you end up watching too many ben stiller skits that are not actually ben stiller skits. and then i kinda wiah i could just pick up some choice tunes at the newage store.

Other phrases to describe the sensation refer to it as a "brain orgasm", "brain massage", "head tingle", "brain tingles", "head orgasm", "spine tingle", and "braingasm".[4][5][6][7][8]

This sounds like a lot of fun. I'm going to try it out when I get home, because I'm at work

by the way i tried a pair of these today:
https://www.bose.co.uk/en_gb/products/frames.html

and listening to the above clip (Virtual barbershop) was FUCKING FREAKY. literally a second after i had hit play, even though i knew exactly what i was doing, and exactly what i was about to hear, i TURNED MY HEAD the fuck around to MAKE SURE that the sounds weren't being made by something actually in the room. the guys showing it to me explained that because with the glasses nothing is on your ears, the sounds of the real world aren't getting filtered out, so it's much easier to fool your brain that the recorded sounds are integrated into the actually-existing soundscape. it isn't always what you would want i guess - often it's great to block out the sound of public transportation, etc - but... dawg. and then of course it's a whole nother level with head tracking - you turn your head and the sound of the crackling fire (or whatever) appears to stay in the same place in relation to you...

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 14 June 2019 15:58 (four years ago) link

ogmor, Friday, 14 June 2019 17:47 (four years ago) link

Well, I know what I'm buying in a year or two when the prices get reduced/competing manufacturers put out less expensive versions of the product. Hell, I'm hoping Skullcandy comes out with an equivalent product because I find their items to be more within my price range and I already use their wireless headphones on the regular. Wow.

BTW, one of my good friends has a friend (whom I've befriended on FB) who's getting her own ASMR channel off the ground. Here's one of her videos:

Kim Richards = former child star turned "Real Housewives" reality TV star.
Lisa Rinna = former TV star turned "Real Housewives" reality TV star.
Eileen Davidson = IDK. Ok, apparently she was a former soap opera star turned "Real Housewives" reality TV star.

So it looks like this is a clip from a scene from whatever version of "Real Housewives" starred all three of those people. IDK and honestly couldn't care less now I know the probable source. Yeah, I'm an ASMR snob.
