Jodorowsky's Dune documentary coming soon

Moodles, Monday, 20 May 2013 15:32 (ten years ago) link

excited

also for Dune doc!!

I've still never seen The Rainbow Thief, either, but I bought that boxed set that came out a few years ago (El Topo, The Holy Mountain, Fando y Lis and some short films, plus the soundtracks to El Topo and The Holy Mountain), and I got the recent DVD of Santa Sangre too. Would love to interview Jodorowsky.

he's disowned the Rainbow Thief fwiw, dunno if its worth watching

I feel pretty safe skipping TRT, and also that children's movie about elephants that he did. But yes, I'm super pumped for this as well!

want someone to finish making jodo's dune.

some dune projects have begun, then been abandoned, over the past few years. i realize it's a very hard story to convert into a film, but so was the lord of the rings trilogy, and that was done very well.

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 14 February 2014 17:44 (ten years ago) link

I like the Lynch version fine, altho obviously its totally different than what Jodo would've done with it

you mean the theatrically-released version or the "director's cut"? i hear they're very different.

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 14 February 2014 18:45 (ten years ago) link

I was just reading about the propsed soundtrack for this thing, supposedly going to be split into thirds with Henry Cow, Pink Floyd and Magma.

Rad movie. Best parts were Jodo's stories about trying to recruit Dali and his reaction to seeing the David Lynch "Dune" but the whole thing was delightful.

jmm, Sunday, 2 November 2014 22:12 (nine years ago) link

such a lively character (84 year-old Jodorowsky), his conviction (enthusiasm, bitterness etc.) is so apparent, it's really inspiring.

xelab, Monday, 3 November 2014 00:17 (nine years ago) link

I've no doubt his Dune would have been a royal mess. I get the impression Jodorowsky has a lot of interest in the visual, stylistic, and iconographic potentialities in Dune, but he hardly talks about the story at all.

So uh... a customer brought in an old, illustrated/storyboarded script for Jodorowsky's Dune. I'm going to try to get photos of the illustrations because they're kind of awesome. Don't know who did them - doesn't look like Moebius or anything. This doesn't look exactly like the book in the documentary, btw.

that's harsh. i have to admit he comes across as really charming in the documentary about his abortive attempt at "dune", but i still couldn't help thinking "if this movie ever got made, it would be terrible." i kind of like some of jodorowsky's films, but they're essentially kitsch.

I dunno. (amateurist), Saturday, 28 February 2015 09:14 (nine years ago) link

he has really clean veneers these days

I dunno. (amateurist), Saturday, 28 February 2015 09:14 (nine years ago) link

although interestingly i think the david lynch dune has the same essential problem as i imagine a jodorowsky dune would have. lynch doesn't seem very engaged in the complex story and it comes across as incoherent, so it's really just one stunning visual after another with not much to anchor them.

I dunno. (amateurist), Saturday, 28 February 2015 09:16 (nine years ago) link

i still enjoy watching it, though, almost as an art installation rather than a narrative.

Like, I have no idea who drew these. They may actually be early sketches by someone connected to Jodorowsky himself. They don't have the finished look of the things I've seen in the movie.

‘The Holy Mountain’ is way more preposterous and lurid than even films like Fellini’s ‘Satyricon’ or Pasolini’s ‘Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom’

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:41 (two years ago) link

It is the ultimate 1973 film

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:42 (two years ago) link

of the experimental films from that era, though, I liked Kenneth Anger's 'Lucifer Rising' (1972) and its Bobby Beausoleil score

still haven't seen Pink Narcissus (1971)

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:51 (two years ago) link

There were regular double bills of El Topo and The Holy Mountain in Toronto for many years while they were being kept out of distribution in the States by Allen Klein. Apparently it was a contractual requirement for them to be shown together; I watched them both on the same night and that was WAY too much Jodorowsky at once.
I just saw Santa Sangre recently, with no particular expectations, and was really pleasantly surprised. For a filmmaker who I tend to think of as having a narrow range of effects (doing one particular thing very well), there was a lot of humour and emotional depth to the story that was entirely compatible with the usual grotesquerie. The Dance of Reality, which I saw a few years ago, was soulful in the same way, but I had supposed that that was a recent development in his style, related to the film being autobiographical. I'd probably rank him above Fellini now.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 16 April 2022 01:05 (two years ago) link

he doesn't even come close to Fellini

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 01:14 (two years ago) link

Love Jodo for the most part but no way he even touches Fellini as a filmmaker.

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 16 April 2022 06:47 (two years ago) link

Fantastic Planet would be my 1973 experimental pick.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 16 April 2022 08:05 (two years ago) link

The comparison of the two came to mind because of the circus milieu of Santa Sangre. My personal view on Fellini is that he peaked early with I Vitelloni, and got bigger not better.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 16 April 2022 14:35 (two years ago) link

Sante Sangre is included in my Kanopy subscription, I will watch it

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 23:43 (two years ago) link

Wish there were more films like it. Bit of a shame it isn't as well known as El Topo and Holy Mountain

i finally saw Holy Mountain, last night, in a small room. the colors were bright, the sounds were loud. i thought all the scenes with the fool carrying his replica around were so good. climbing that giant tower, then the alchemist descending the staircase in the slowest of realtime motion. at the end, the alchemist sending the fool home with the woman and chimpanzee who have been following him, before he can reach the top of the mountain. lots to think about.

i wish i were a little more versed in all the symbolism that permeates the film. for example, i recognized these symbols when they appeared and thought it was from the i ching,

https://i.imgur.com/4JcA7v9.png

but they're from something else in taoism, the eight trigrams, and represent Heaven and Earth

https://i.imgur.com/C6kfw7n.png

i might do some internet hunting and see if i can find a shot-by-shot breakdown of the symbolism throughout the movie. would like to watch El Topo soon as well! also, are his 21st century films good?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Sunday, 9 April 2023 15:52 (one year ago) link

i think the new ones were supposed to be a part of a 5-film autobiographical series? i wonder if that's been abandoned or if the scripts/screenplays are somewhat developed

I think Santa Sangre and Dance Of Reality are his best

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 9 April 2023 15:58 (one year ago) link

Maybe I posted on another thread, I got the incal a couple of christmases ago. It was abysmal.

ledge, Sunday, 9 April 2023 15:59 (one year ago) link

He's been paired with some truly stunning comic artists. His plots are nonsense, but I'm willing to roll with it and enjoy the art.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Sunday, 9 April 2023 17:20 (one year ago) link

I gave up on The Incal pretty early. Moebius was not fully operational and I think even Jodorowsky was disappointed in his work there.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 9 April 2023 19:20 (one year ago) link

Santa Sangre is great, an ultra-lurid telenovela-style horror movie. But it's a regular movie-movie, with a plot and whatnot, not a pure yank-your-brain-out-your-ass shotgun blast of symbolism like The Holy Mountain. I don't think any movie on earth is like The Holy Mountain, really.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 9 April 2023 19:41 (one year ago) link

I will not stand for this nonsense Incal talk. Moebius "not fully operational"?!? As opposed to...?

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Sunday, 9 April 2023 21:44 (one year ago) link

I think all his famous comics from before that had better artwork. I wasn't that impressed by his art on Madwoman Of The Sacred Heart either

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 9 April 2023 22:05 (one year ago) link

Incal is 3rd tier Moebius in my view
