the lead guitar bit in the chorus of viceroy is classic

failures on the moon (electricsound), Friday, 17 May 2013 01:19 (six years ago) link

dry, modest and absolutely great "small" record.

Sherrill is his best song imo.

except for being a great songwriter he has a talent for creating awesome guitar lines. Sherrill is the best example of both.

nostormo, Sunday, 19 May 2013 18:17 (six years ago) link

That song reminds me of Women.

the band or the gender?

I cannot stop listening to this musical artist.

Salad Days: new album , new single:

nostormo, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:13 (six years ago) link

not sure about the keyboards but the tune is quite nice

nostormo, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:18 (six years ago) link

yeah i dig. saw his live show recently, the very lengthy covers medley at the end was fucking dreadful

displayed in brackets (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:24 (six years ago) link

what were the covers?

nostormo, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:25 (six years ago) link

taking care of business and enter sandman were two, struggling to recall the others

displayed in brackets (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:56 (six years ago) link

Ugh, sounds awful

fields of salmon, Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:15 (six years ago) link

i actually found the covers quite entertaining - when i saw him i was just a festival punter though, didn't know his music outside of "ode to viceroy" so maybe if i was more invested in him i'd've been more disappointed by a whole lot of covers.

pearly-dewdrops' bops (monotony), Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:18 (six years ago) link

had a briefly v confusing conversation with a dude abt this guy thinking he was talking about roc marciano

r|t|c, Thursday, 23 January 2014 15:12 (six years ago) link

New song sounds great.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 23 January 2014 21:58 (six years ago) link

I got a few more spins on this but did not pull the trigger on the iTunes preorder yet because, well, can anyone point me to a more humane way of preordering something?

Anyway, this is Mac Demarco's "I Am the Walrus" or something—so I predict good things.

fields of salmon, Friday, 24 January 2014 22:39 (six years ago) link

so this guy's gig is basically "the uninteresting ariel pink"?

avant gardener (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 31 January 2014 16:00 (six years ago) link

loveable dirtbag, imo

mizzell, Friday, 31 January 2014 16:13 (six years ago) link

xpost -- That's not so much setting the bar low to start with as burying it in the ground.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 January 2014 16:16 (six years ago) link

can't see the resemblance, but i like them both.

nostormo, Friday, 31 January 2014 17:57 (six years ago) link

Ariel Pink is the Frank Zappa of Mac Demarco impersonators.

fields of salmon, Friday, 31 January 2014 21:00 (six years ago) link

yeah the music is kinda lo-fi and warped sounding like AP but thats where the similarity ends. i love his breezy laid back toonage a lot. maybe hes the dirtbag jonathon richman.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 31 January 2014 21:07 (six years ago) link

he is somewhat of a one trick pony, but i still like it. who knows how long will it last

nostormo, Friday, 31 January 2014 21:12 (six years ago) link

i wouldn't bother seeing him live again, but the new stuff still sounds good

föllakzoidberg (electricsound), Friday, 31 January 2014 21:27 (six years ago) link

the song that goes "mamas in the kitchen cookin up somethin good" is great

flopson, Friday, 31 January 2014 21:37 (six years ago) link

it is, though nothing beats viceroy for me yet

föllakzoidberg (electricsound), Friday, 31 January 2014 22:06 (six years ago) link

his best song imo:

nostormo, Friday, 31 January 2014 22:17 (six years ago) link

great songwriting and underrated guitarist

nostormo, Friday, 31 January 2014 22:18 (six years ago) link

new album is kinda underwhelming, missing those tasty licks

tonga, Thursday, 20 February 2014 20:52 (six years ago) link

yeah, sounds like the previous record only with weaker, lazy melodies.
it is still good enough though.

nostormo, Monday, 3 March 2014 15:51 (five years ago) link

Changed my mind:I like it.

No opinions about the new album?

nostormo, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 07:44 (five years ago) link

The best songs are where indulges in keyboards and synths specifically Chamber of Reflection, Passing out Pieces and Johnny's Odyssey.
Hoping these songs are a reflection of where he is headed next.

scubasteve, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 13:04 (five years ago) link

first listen and i have to agree that its like the previous one but not as good. maybe it needs a few more spins.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 14 March 2014 20:05 (five years ago) link

So how come no one talks about how AWESOME the Makeout Videotape record is?

nostormo, Saturday, 15 March 2014 18:57 (five years ago) link

Those are awesome links nostromo.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 15 March 2014 19:03 (five years ago) link

I mean nostormo.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 15 March 2014 19:03 (five years ago) link

All the tracks on the new one are good but are all the same tempo, I wish there were a few uptempo songs like "Freaking Out the Neighborhood" on II. Also I wish the last track had lyrics, because then it would be one of the best tracks on the album.

crunchytunes (EssenceOfJones), Thursday, 27 March 2014 15:59 (five years ago) link

this new album is a nice, easy listen. and it's got that traditional, rockist guitar-rock vibe that still resonates with me (which makes sense, since i'm about to qualify for AARP membership).

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 16:16 (five years ago) link

i love the guitar tone on this, so... rubbery? woozy?

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:58 (five years ago) link

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 17:59 (five years ago) link

It reminds me of the Eccentric Soul series being played by white Pavement fans. The majority of the Eccentric Soul master tapes were, I believe, rescued from flood-damaged basements in cities like Miami. Literally watery.

fields of salmon, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 18:57 (five years ago) link

one year passes...

So at the end of the last track on the new one he seems to give his address and invites the listener over for coffee

calstars, Saturday, 18 July 2015 00:29 (four years ago) link

soyrev, Saturday, 18 July 2015 01:55 (four years ago) link

Another One is my favorite thing he's done, maybe the only one i really like (aside from some pleasant demos and the instrumental toss-offs on Some Other Ones). its sameyness is cozy and hypnotic, a good bit like the Green Album (hate to mention that twice on these boards in a month but i really don't know many pop records that do anything similar), and it's even more compact (like, Wild Honey compact). nice, convenient album

soyrev, Saturday, 18 July 2015 02:00 (four years ago) link

He seems like an affable dirtbag.

Sam Weller, Friday, 24 July 2015 12:46 (four years ago) link

on stage last week he just looked dirty

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 July 2015 12:51 (four years ago) link

I can't even believe this dude is so desperate to maintain a fanbase that he has stooped to inviting strangers into his home for coffee

wait yes I can

Wimmels, Friday, 24 July 2015 13:16 (four years ago) link

i'd put him above father john. teens of denial is pretty damn good in places. but yeah i definitely am not as excited by it as i am (and were) by mac's stuff

hackshaw, Monday, 14 August 2017 23:51 (two years ago) link

i don't care for either of them, but in terms of establishing a devoted fanbase that will follow you thru time, you've gotta get their hearts. MD admitted as much in a recent interview, it was sometime this year, that he did "a lot of internet stuff" at the start of his career. im sure he meets and talks to a lot of fans at his shows. he put his address at the end of a record and invited them over for coffee! it's a personal connection & also an audience that skews younger than CSH & FJM - that's important. the kid that fell in love with your record as a teenager will probably be at least peripherally aware of you the rest of their life.

flappy bird, Monday, 14 August 2017 23:54 (two years ago) link

definitely. but also car seat has a bunch of twitter fanatics into his music similar to mac. father john misty is of a different generation/time of indie music and combats that with cynicism and being a freaky hippie guy or whatever.

hackshaw, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 00:11 (two years ago) link

i could compare mac to paul westerberg omg

I’ve no idea why he released this new record, this is the aural equivalent of not giving a fuck and it’s not nice, sir.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 10 May 2019 18:32 (nine months ago) link

only heard a couple singles so far but man did he sound like he was phoning it in

flappy bird, Friday, 10 May 2019 18:54 (nine months ago) link

Yeah this is mostly terrible, I don’t get why even release it. Unless he was being pressured by the label to release something, I think he might be seriously depressed.

mac demarco has released something half-assed? say it isn't so

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:38 (nine months ago) link

i question mac demarco's giddyup

i got bag sauce in my bag (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 10 May 2019 21:30 (nine months ago) link

Oh if you thought the previous records were half-assed you ain’t hear nothing yet

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 10 May 2019 23:22 (nine months ago) link

Yeah, despite his image I never thought his records were half-assed. Particularly Another One and This Old Dog - those album sound great and the songwriting is really strong.

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 May 2019 05:21 (nine months ago) link

This guy is the definition of overrated

nostormo, Saturday, 11 May 2019 05:46 (nine months ago) link

dunno, i think mac's a good guitar player, and the songs on 2, salad days, another one and this old dog have stood up quite well. not heard new stuff

meaulnes, Sunday, 12 May 2019 01:27 (nine months ago) link

I prefer his earlier stuff, think it's been diminishing returns since 2 which is prob my favourite thing he's done. Listening to the new one now, I'll give my thrilling opinion when I'm done

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 12 May 2019 01:36 (nine months ago) link

Part of his fame is obviously for extra musical reasons (he has charismatic star quality)

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 12 May 2019 01:38 (nine months ago) link

But that's hardly uncommon in popular music

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 12 May 2019 01:38 (nine months ago) link

My verdict: seems much of a muchness to me. Obv the opening track and choose choo are throwaway but other than that I dont think it's some huge outlier. I do think it confirms I am not really into his newer stuff and can probably cease to pay much attention to him

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 12 May 2019 02:21 (nine months ago) link

He lost me after Salad Days. Minus the heavy sleaze I don't find him all that compelling.

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Sunday, 12 May 2019 02:58 (nine months ago) link

A lot of my dismissal of Mac isnt exactly his fault -- it's just that letting YouTube know that, once, you looked up "mac demarco live" means you forever get every innately possible bit of channelings straight into your recommended videos, forever. It's like the algorithm has a particular penchant for bands that encourage seeming fanaticism, and think they're doing the right thing in assuming you probably also fit the bill.

I loathe him just on basis of how much sheer content and editorial is given to him. Undeserving to an extreme. Seems like a fun guy to go camping with. Our American idol.

57mg/20floz, Sunday, 12 May 2019 11:59 (nine months ago) link

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 13 May 2019 01:41 (nine months ago) link

Sam Weller, Monday, 13 May 2019 07:30 (nine months ago) link

he truly is A. S. M. R. Cale on this new one

i got bag sauce in my bag (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 13 May 2019 21:04 (nine months ago) link

"nobody" is one of his best songs & one of my favorites of the year

the rest of the album doesn't really stick sadly even tho it's very well produced & nice to listen to. i don't think it's a question of being half assed...

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 14 May 2019 17:51 (nine months ago) link
