i always end up looking at baseball around july thinking i should get into it, football is still far away, basketball is a distant memory, i read up a lil then i try to watch a game and four and a half hours later i don't care anymore so i just look at the standings every few weeks and watch a few playoff games

so, fuck baseball

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 01:38 (ten years ago) link

crazy that gerald green is getting DNPs in the playoffs with sam young getting minutes

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 May 2013 15:03 (ten years ago) link

not that vogel is wrong, i just didn't think green would be this bad

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 May 2013 15:03 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, kinda sad to see Green on the bench-- he lost his spot in the rotation to Orlando Johnson late in the year. He had huge flashes of brilliance at times during the year, but dude got in a bad habit of jacking up 3s rather than driving, and his D wasn't too good. Now he's not even getting garbage time minutes. Which sucks because there were moments during the season where he looked like an instant-offense/energy type guy. And, aside from Lance and PG, the only player capable of producing highlightgifs.

Would love to read a long piece about the recent surge in Instant Offense 6th men like JCrawford/JRSmith/NRobinson/etc. Feel some teams stumbled into finding a hidden inefficiency w/r/t running offenses w/ bench players. Basically, bench players play w/ so many different teammates / mishmashed opposing lineups that they're not able to run offensive sets very smoothly. So, it makes more sense to put a volume shooter who can get clean looks (best case would be aforementioned guys; feel like starters like Rudy Gay and Danny Granger could fit the bill, too) to carry most of the load, then use those other 4 spots to shore up defense/rebounding. This would also allow that high-volume guy to play "in the flow of the game" as someone who knows he'll get his shots in ~20min/game rather than trying to "steal" shots from other players if you were running a normal offensive set.

Also why the fuck do the Knicks keep playing Jason Kidd 15+ min/game?!?! Feel like Woodson's substitutions have been demonstrably bad this whole series. Pacers aren't the most adept at attacking the worst matchup on offense, so no reason Knicks couldn't put in a defensive liability like Novak (figured he was injured, but I guess he's just not in the rotation right now?) who can put up points. Wouldn't be surprised if Kidd's #s through 10 games are historically bad.

Although since his shot left him, have been loling at the extra pride Kidd has in his passes, making them super-crisp/determined/textbook. Like, making routine passes with much purpose.

Taj Gibson Praise: THE BOY IS THE KEY (CompuPost), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

Kidd is so toast

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 18:43 (ten years ago) link

"JCrawford/JRSmith/NRobinson etc"

Harden last year, Jack this year, Bayless, Thornton, etc. Seems like every team has to have one of these.

Was Pop one of the first to do this with Ginobli?

naw instant offense off the bench has been around forever

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 20:03 (ten years ago) link

Eh, I think Manu fits the old mould more with guys like Detlef/Kukoc/Manning/Walton/McHale/Havlicek-- basically 6th starters.

Feel like the Instant Offense guys are somewhat of a new phenomenon, since they're looked at less as 2nd Unit Leaders and more Dudes Who Will Take All the Shots (rather than playing within a more normal offensive system). Like, recent 6MotYear winners like Barbosa/Terry/Crawford/Smith (Feel like Harden isn't one-dimensional enough to get thrown in w/ these guys).

Taj Gibson Praise: THE BOY IS THE KEY (CompuPost), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link

It's funny because there seems to be vague trend changes since they started giving that award out (w/ some selective memory ...):

6th Starters (Bobby Jones/McHale/Walton/Tarpley/Detlef) -> Bruisers/Hustlers (Mason/Darrell Armstrong/Rodney Rodgers/McKie/Corliss/Bobby Jackson) -> Instant Offense

Taj Gibson Praise: THE BOY IS THE KEY (CompuPost), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 20:24 (ten years ago) link

yeah feels like the 6th man used to be varied and now it only goes to bench gunner types

so weird to me that dude was born and raised in Seattle, like where are the conservatives in Seattle!

But then I was hangin out at a Portland dive last night and got Reditt Libertarianed by a dude wearing a Lincoln-as-Wolverine tshirt, who began conversation with "so what president do you think would make the best superhero?" so politically conscious shitheads don't care for geography I suppose.

I kinda mumbled something about how Taft seems like a good secret identity. Didn't really want to engage a guy who I'd overheard moments before rambling about the gold standard and how the federal reserve is "technically illegal."
