"baby" is rly good, damn

umm also gonna profess my love for the chris malinchak one. i like drippiness tho.

dyl, Sunday, 12 May 2013 23:54 (ten years ago) link

One thing I really like about "Baby" is how it builds so remorselessly (though gracefully) from airy vocal house to trippy deepness, and then resets itself back to the beginning, only to go through the process again. It really traverses the terrain of possibilities afforded by the weird dance-pop meets deep house equation of the moment.

it is brilliant how the drop is made to sound SO dramatically deep as well, a real feat of production - usually that kind of move comes off more like the sky and stars opening up but this is suddenly rushing, claustrophobic, simultaneously tinny and muffled submarine acoustics with pressure gauges off the meter and (literal) crush depth alarms ringing out of control. love as single-person bathysphere, and quite correctly so

(although truthfully speaking i did just think my mp3 was buggered at first)

i keep wanting to sing "baby, don't make me watch - if i can't ride it"

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 09:23 (ten years ago) link

i keep expecting it to turn into bashmore's 'au seve'. is that... intentional...?

✌_✌ (c sharp major), Monday, 13 May 2013 10:09 (ten years ago) link

it's like they retroactively decided to write a song that au seve could have been sampled from.

✌_✌ (c sharp major), Monday, 13 May 2013 10:11 (ten years ago) link

Speaking of the drop in Baby, it's a neat trick how the chorus IS the breakdown...!? and the drop comes just AFTER the chorus is over? Maybe this is an old trick, but it's the first time I've noticed it.

By the way don't sleep on that Hannah Wants mix

kind of weird that a huxley mix from skream & benga maybe belongs better in the bobbins thread, but hey

haha, I've actually been thinking "how much of this seeming immense deepness is in due to a fact a poor quality rip?"

Tim F, Monday, 13 May 2013 10:47 (ten years ago) link

BTW maybe my biggest critical faux pas of 2012 was almost-instantly forgetting how massive and awesome and just brilliant and etc. Kidnap Kid's "Lazarys Taxon" was and is after briefly falling in love with it way back in the first part of the year.

What other mix has it been in? I feel like i've heard it many more times than just the four or so times I listened to it then.

Tim F, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:03 (ten years ago) link

"Lazarus Taxon" is also a good tune.

Tim F, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:03 (ten years ago) link

xp re: 'Baby' breakdown: yeah you particularly notice its muddiness when you mix it in with other stuff i found. I like rtc's description of it though, I guess it must be a production choice. It also makes Sinead Harnett's verse seem more snappy when it kicks in.

Benny B, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:09 (ten years ago) link

Totally.

It is nice to see Hot Creations together with the UK stuff on this MoS mix.

I'd never heard this Ben Pearce track before the MoS collection. But then, I guess these have all been big hits...

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

Totally missed this thread and it's one I should be watching.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 17:30 (ten years ago) link

Moka, FYI the Harry Wolfman remix of the Ben Pearce is the killer IMO.

This comp is great though! They really nail the vibe and it's nice to have the legit deep tunes interspersed with more pop and/or not-explicitly-1993 material.

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:22 (ten years ago) link

it was nice to be watching music TV for the first time in months and months while visiting the family for the weekend and hearing that this vibe is now so much the standard for UK stuff, RIP Guetta and Harris, GTF Americans still stuck in that sound.

That said, 'deep house' is perhaps not the least confusing genre name MoS could have found.

ohmigud (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:41 (ten years ago) link

ooooooh shit i'd never bovd listening to the harry wolfman mix. tasty!

r|t|c, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 22:12 (ten years ago) link

xpost a lot of it really is deep though! Stuff like "White Noise" is really at one end, stuff the Wolfman mix is at the other and you wouldn't bat an eyelid hearing that in basically any "proper" deep house set.

In that regard the Needwant TRAXX comp is maybe more "pure" but I find myself getting bored of that one more easily (curiously, esp. in mixed form - as standalone tracks it's much more bearable), whereas the incursions into populism help to juice up the Ministry of Sound comp.

The really perfunctory mixing also helps, five second transitions show up the contrasts from track to track with a certain brute efficiency.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:22 (ten years ago) link

Best thing about the Wolfman remix is how it really doesn't want to try that hard to get you to like its likkle organ vamp, it's like "oh yeah, I guess you wanted this huh."

Tim F, Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:30 (ten years ago) link

O yah, this remix is nice.

Just to clarify the thing about hits, this compilation on the whole makes me feel like I'm an old guy discovering what young people's music is like.

Hannah Wants mix upthread is really great though. I think she's officially jumped to the top of my must see DJ wish list.

MikoMcha, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:53 (ten years ago) link

Heh, that's why I bought it. From Sainsburys! Awful mix out of Chris Malinchak, though. If I dare say so, Pete Tong uses Malinchak to start a much better run on his half of All Gone Miami 2013. (The other half is mixed by Skream, and it just doesn't work at all - jumps around all over the place in style and mood.)

mike t-diva, Friday, 24 May 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

Possibly the wrong tread for it, but this new Ikonika track is really fucking nice imo:

Dunno who the singer Jessy Lanza is but overall there's some very Tessio-like vibe to that song.

Quite like this new Sinead Harnett:
