Hard choice. Went with 'Fakin' It'!

I used to think this album was really good but having listened to it recently it seems a bit flimsy

America > Hazy Shade of Winter > Fakin' It > At the Zoo > Old Friends > Save the Life of My Child > Mrs. Robinson > Overs > Bookends Theme > Punky's Dilemma > Bookends Theme (Intro) > Voices of Old People

have we ever polled all the albums? for me it's either parley, sage, rosemary + thyme or bridge over troubled water. i'm pretty sure for the last decade 'for emily' has been my fave song period - just so gorgeous.

America or Fakin' It. Probably America.

Slight edge to "Mrs. Robinson" over "At the Zoo." Love both--they dwarf everything else for me.

I did a search of the forums (as I usually do before I start a thread) and was a bit taken aback that this album hadn't been polled yet... it's been talked about, sure, but not polled yet.

i've always been partial to a hazy shade of winter. could have went with mrs. robinson though, which is an outstanding song that has suffered from being overplayed. i think of it as a separate thing from the movie -- about a different mrs robinson -- and that makes me enjoy the song more, even though i love that movie and don't have "mixed feelings" about it, like so many people seem to.

looking at wikipedia. mrs robinson was originally titled "mrs. roosevelt" and that makes a lot more sense re. "our nation turns its lonely eyes to you."

is there a simon and garfunkel albums poll? i searched in the archives and couldn't find one. that would be a topic i'd want to argue about.

as i remember there was a poll between Bookends and BOtW, not sure if there was an all albums button poll, if so it was likely at the same time as the OG Bookends poll

hmmm, when this one is finished i might start one then. i don't even really know what my answer would be at the moment.

were Mrs Wagner Pies popular in the States at the time? never heard of them outside of this record.

Think maybe it is some old time thing like Carter's Liver Pills, which you may only have heard of in a Funkadelic song.

i always imagined they were a Mr Kipling small sweet cakes kind of deal but googling suggests more of a hearty meat pie? never factored in Paul and Kathy sat eating couple of a pork pies whenever i pictured it.

Someone voted "Voices of Old People" in the other poll! Trying hard not to vote "America" but looks like I'm going to fail.

Voting "Save The Life Of My Child." "America" and "Mrs. Robinson" are superior songs but I just can't hear them anymore, whereas the chorus and coda of STLOMC still give me unjustifiable goosebumps. It's nice, I think, they undercut this "message" song about troubled youth and the crowd pushing them to jump (or whatever Lord of the Flies thing is going on here) with this basically universal thing of a parent that doesn't care about anything at this moment but the kid, really couldn't care less about the political content or the troubled times or whatever.

Prob a UK/America thing, but I always assumed meat pies for some reason.

I'd probably have to go for Hazy Shade just over Fakin It but feel like I'm giving Mrs Robinson the shaft because its so overplayed - mostly by me personally when I was a little kid playing my dad's records. I totally fixated on this and Punky's Dilemma for some reason.

This was the gateway S&G album for me. Thanks, Dad. America is tremendous but Hazy Shade is more of a rush.

BTW, to the person asking about S&G polls, we polled Paul last year. Lots of S&G tunes made it.

Voted for "Save the life of my child". Bob Moog set up the bass synth patch himself to demonstrate how good his modular system was. And it sounds like it was recorded in an underground car park. And it's spooky as hell. I love the whole album but that one song is immense.

Never liked "Save the Life of My Child," and the loud synth in the beginning is far too jarring an intro after coming out of "Bookends."

But that's the reason it rules!

Should be remixed with the Doctor Who theme, or the Triple Triad music or something, that bouncy poingy Moog sound is just so awesome.

I completely agree, the string arrangement sounds quite mournful... that part of the LP is a bit of an emotional journey for me.

heck yeah, love that moog synth.

this is one of my all-time favorite fall records. i really love the sparse arrangements and shifting moods throughout. the whole album has that moody college bookworm feel to it.

fwiw i inherited a copy from my mom that she had when she was a kid so it has this wonderful hippie dippie flower doodle she drew in pencil on the inner sleeve. <3

can't remember if i voted in this or not but this may have been my vote too. i love the noisey ending. also when after singing "In a former life i must've been a tailor" it briefly cuts away to a time displacement sound collage like the song has just caught itself up in a daydream.

I think we pinpointed where that film dialogue comes from at some point?

Beverley Martyn, who was married to John Martyn, but Mr. Leitch refers to Donovan cuz it's his surname.

Wow, who ever knew Beverley Martyn was married to John Martyn and Donovan's surname was Leitch? Amazing.

I'd guess plenty of people who have late '60s/early '70s folk as a musical blind spot. Do keep it up though, Thomas.
