Hard choice. Went with 'Fakin' It'!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Sunday, 12 May 2013 15:05 (ten years ago) link

I used to think this album was really good but having listened to it recently it seems a bit flimsy

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 May 2013 15:10 (ten years ago) link

America > Hazy Shade of Winter > Fakin' It > At the Zoo > Old Friends > Save the Life of My Child > Mrs. Robinson > Overs > Bookends Theme > Punky's Dilemma > Bookends Theme (Intro) > Voices of Old People

Mordy , Sunday, 12 May 2013 15:15 (ten years ago) link

have we ever polled all the albums? for me it's either parley, sage, rosemary + thyme or bridge over troubled water. i'm pretty sure for the last decade 'for emily' has been my fave song period - just so gorgeous.

Mordy , Sunday, 12 May 2013 15:19 (ten years ago) link

America or Fakin' It. Probably America.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 12 May 2013 15:21 (ten years ago) link

Slight edge to "Mrs. Robinson" over "At the Zoo." Love both--they dwarf everything else for me.

clemenza, Sunday, 12 May 2013 15:27 (ten years ago) link

sure we've done this. "America", anyway, tho I love the title themes.

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 12 May 2013 16:11 (ten years ago) link

I did a search of the forums (as I usually do before I start a thread) and was a bit taken aback that this album hadn't been polled yet... it's been talked about, sure, but not polled yet.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Sunday, 12 May 2013 17:15 (ten years ago) link

i've always been partial to a hazy shade of winter. could have went with mrs. robinson though, which is an outstanding song that has suffered from being overplayed. i think of it as a separate thing from the movie -- about a different mrs robinson -- and that makes me enjoy the song more, even though i love that movie and don't have "mixed feelings" about it, like so many people seem to.

Treeship, Sunday, 12 May 2013 17:19 (ten years ago) link

looking at wikipedia. mrs robinson was originally titled "mrs. roosevelt" and that makes a lot more sense re. "our nation turns its lonely eyes to you."

Voices Of Poll People - The "Bookends" Poll

i know it wasn't easy to find but i knew we'd done it

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 12 May 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

is there a simon and garfunkel albums poll? i searched in the archives and couldn't find one. that would be a topic i'd want to argue about.

Treeship, Sunday, 12 May 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

as i remember there was a poll between Bookends and BOtW, not sure if there was an all albums button poll, if so it was likely at the same time as the OG Bookends poll

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 12 May 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

hmmm, when this one is finished i might start one then. i don't even really know what my answer would be at the moment.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Sunday, 12 May 2013 17:54 (ten years ago) link

whatever, this is a fun poll anyway. that was four years ago.

It's not easy, being in the harmony game.

Mordy p close except "Mrs R" a little low

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 12 May 2013 18:23 (ten years ago) link

America, just, over Mrs R and Save The Life Of My Child, which I only heard for the first time last year, and which made me go WTF big time.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 12 May 2013 18:36 (ten years ago) link

as before, "America", & for the same reasons

Euler, Sunday, 12 May 2013 18:40 (ten years ago) link

have to say America, boring as that is.

piscesx, Sunday, 12 May 2013 20:00 (ten years ago) link

'Fakin' It' just over 'Hazy Shade of Winter'

Gavin, Leeds, Sunday, 12 May 2013 21:03 (ten years ago) link

were Mrs Wagner Pies popular in the States at the time? never heard of them outside of this record.

piscesx, Sunday, 12 May 2013 21:42 (ten years ago) link

Think maybe it is some old time thing like Carter's Liver Pills, which you may only have heard of in a Funkadelic song.

Retreat from the Sunship (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 May 2013 21:46 (ten years ago) link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Wagner's_Pies

I get the impression they were more of a 'local' thing rather a 'national' thing...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Sunday, 12 May 2013 22:29 (ten years ago) link

Yeah but

In September 1940, The Newark News described F.W. Birkenihauer as president of Mrs. Wagner's Pies, the "largest pie bakery in the country, with its home plant in Newark and five branches as far west as Chicago."[2]

makes it seem reasonably big. Although maybe by their very nature bakeries often are regional. Just found out that the Girl Scout cookie known as the Do-Si-Do was not only very similar to the cookie known as the Gaucho but was in fact the very same thing, baked by the same bakery, Burry's.

Retreat from the Sunship (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 May 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link

i always imagined they were a Mr Kipling small sweet cakes kind of deal but googling suggests more of a hearty meat pie? never factored in Paul and Kathy sat eating couple of a pork pies whenever i pictured it.

piscesx, Sunday, 12 May 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

Someone voted "Voices of Old People" in the other poll! Trying hard not to vote "America" but looks like I'm going to fail.

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:08 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, wow, I thought it was more like Hostess Fruit Pies. Oh well.

Voting "Save The Life Of My Child." "America" and "Mrs. Robinson" are superior songs but I just can't hear them anymore, whereas the chorus and coda of STLOMC still give me unjustifiable goosebumps. It's nice, I think, they undercut this "message" song about troubled youth and the crowd pushing them to jump (or whatever Lord of the Flies thing is going on here) with this basically universal thing of a parent that doesn't care about anything at this moment but the kid, really couldn't care less about the political content or the troubled times or whatever.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 May 2013 12:44 (ten years ago) link

Prob a UK/America thing, but I always assumed meat pies for some reason.

the so-called socialista (dowd), Monday, 13 May 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link

"america" for the yes cover

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 13 May 2013 18:58 (ten years ago) link

I'd probably have to go for Hazy Shade just over Fakin It but feel like I'm giving Mrs Robinson the shaft because its so overplayed - mostly by me personally when I was a little kid playing my dad's records. I totally fixated on this and Punky's Dilemma for some reason.

brio, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:24 (ten years ago) link

damn, didn't mean to talk about giving Mrs Robinson the shaft there... yeesh

geez i remember Burry's Gauchos... and my mom worked at the Newark News. Didn't remember Mrs. Wagner's Pies, or that line.

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:33 (ten years ago) link

This was the gateway S&G album for me. Thanks, Dad. America is tremendous but Hazy Shade is more of a rush.

BTW, to the person asking about S&G polls, we polled Paul last year. Lots of S&G tunes made it.

that's not my post, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 05:44 (ten years ago) link

Voted for "Save the life of my child". Bob Moog set up the bass synth patch himself to demonstrate how good his modular system was. And it sounds like it was recorded in an underground car park. And it's spooky as hell. I love the whole album but that one song is immense.

Rob M Revisited, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 22:58 (ten years ago) link

Never liked "Save the Life of My Child," and the loud synth in the beginning is far too jarring an intro after coming out of "Bookends."

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 17:24 (ten years ago) link

But that's the reason it rules!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 17:27 (ten years ago) link

Should be remixed with the Doctor Who theme, or the Triple Triad music or something, that bouncy poingy Moog sound is just so awesome.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 17:33 (ten years ago) link

he wishes he was an english muffin. what more could you want from a song?

billstevejim, Thursday, 16 May 2013 05:57 (ten years ago) link

four years pass...

'Voices of Old People' into 'Old Friends' and then 'Bookends Theme' ... aw man. Yet another masterpiece from 1968.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 20:29 (six years ago) link

"old friends" is extremely haunting/sad

(to me)

brimstead, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 20:34 (six years ago) link

I completely agree, the string arrangement sounds quite mournful... that part of the LP is a bit of an emotional journey for me.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

Save The Life Of My Child is totally weird and cool

Fox Mulder, FYI (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 20:40 (six years ago) link

The bass synth and sound effects on 'Save the Life of My Child' after the opening 'Bookends Theme' too!

(x-post) Heh!

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 20:42 (six years ago) link

heck yeah, love that moog synth.

this is one of my all-time favorite fall records. i really love the sparse arrangements and shifting moods throughout. the whole album has that moody college bookworm feel to it.

fwiw i inherited a copy from my mom that she had when she was a kid so it has this wonderful hippie dippie flower doodle she drew in pencil on the inner sleeve. <3

can't remember if i voted in this or not but this may have been my vote too. i love the noisey ending. also when after singing "In a former life i must've been a tailor" it briefly cuts away to a time displacement sound collage like the song has just caught itself up in a daydream.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 00:06 (six years ago) link

might have voted for "at the zoo"

vocal work in "At the Zoo" is great. the lyrics are fantastic. that song is lovely.

Beverley Martyn, who was married to John Martyn, but Mr. Leitch refers to Donovan cuz it's his surname.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 9 November 2017 06:59 (six years ago) link

Wow, who ever knew Beverley Martyn was married to John Martyn and Donovan's surname was Leitch? Amazing.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 08:26 (six years ago) link

I'd guess plenty of people who have late '60s/early '70s folk as a musical blind spot. Do keep it up though, Thomas.
