harden is the ideal two for one player because of his three point shooting and how quickly he can get to the rim imo

doesn't need to be a 3 tho, all those guys i mentioned barrel into the paint for quick layups all the time too. a layup's about the same EV as a 3

even a long 2 i don't hate in those situations, all the guys who actually consciously do this are good shooters and you're still probably talking about positive value even with a less than ideal shot

Yeah, if you have a player who can drive / pull-up 3pt at a decent percentage, 2-1 is a no brainer as long as you're leaving yourself like +7 seconds.

to clarify/expand on this a little (i'm bored), i would argue that efficiency actually becomes virtually irrelevant in the context of a 2 for 1. let's say you take two mid-range jumpers - the league average from 16-23 feet is 38%, which is 0.76 PPP. take two of those shots, and your expected return on offense would be 1.52 points (and arguably would be higher if guys like chris paul and james harden are taking the shots). now let's say the other team, in their one possession, gets a wide open corner 3, which would be worth about 1.2 points, assuming a 40% hit rate. in other words, it's better to have two offensive possessions with an efficiency worse than the bobcats than it is to have one offensive possession with the thunder's efficiency.

this is also why i would disagree with matt when he said we could look at their PPP to see if 2 for 1s work or not - the reason that PPP is a good measure of efficiency when comparing teams is that teams generally get the same amount of possessions. what a 2 for 1 does is allow a team to get an extra possession. so even if your 2 for 1-ing brings down your overall efficiency, there's still value there and you should do it
