If I want a statement I'll go to my bank, not a record shop. Making a good record should be the priority. Then give it away for free if your politics are serious, otherwise you're a hypocrite.

So there is no place in music for conceptualism or statements?

― Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 10 May 2013 13:59 (2 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

No. If you want to make a political point go and become a politician. The problem with most modern music is that there is no place for music.

There was some kind of Steampunk party in Atlanta a few weeks ago (sadly i didn't get to go). I don't know how it turned out but some hip local bands played and it sounded like some kind of cool thing. It seems to sort of fit into Etsy DIY culture and "The Dream of the 1890s" etc. Next time i hear about a Steampunk party i really need to make a point to check it out.

I do wish there were Cyberpunk-themed parties though. Maybe that's what raves are like (I've never been to one).

I have a thesis about altered-scale Western music: it sucks. But it sucks kind of deliciously, these lesser geniuses trying to create a school of thought that rivalled Second Viennese School -> musique concrete & Xenakis, and basically coming up with a lot of "I like to play out of tune and I am crazy"

And sorry, I have no idea who you are or your musical background.

Gregory Bateson is always appropriate (sarahell), Thursday, 1 August 2013 01:19 (ten years ago) link

Think the point was that even in self-indictment you shouldn't deign to speak for everyone; perhaps your biggest crime (in my opinion) was to not elaborate on "I like to play out of tune and I am crazy" because I think that while *perhaps* a lot of this music does stem from a subconscious desire to push beyond, to transcend the meagre palette conventionally available, in manifesting experimentally this conceit, perhaps genuine and sincere expression is found. I suppose that would be your thesis, which would be very welcome on the altered scale thread. I'm also perturbed by "lesser geniuses" - subjectivity is permitted, of course, but it's a really loaded term regardless. Anyway, it's a fucken great thread and you've posted loads of awesome stuff there, which is the real reason you get a pass (from me at least)

imago, Thursday, 1 August 2013 01:25 (ten years ago) link

@ sarahell, a few posts later, I explained: Just to be clear, I am posting on this thread to be proven wrong. I love extended scales, my own new music uses 24-tone tunings, primarily for saturating the colours of essentially diatonic music. I've spent the last five years buying up as many records by famous scale-doctoring composers as I can find and what I've heard has been either

― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 16:26 (2 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

the racial dynamics of the performance were depressingly typical (i cosign everything in that article posted above), but other than that i think it was authentically weird. the teddy bears, the unflattering outfit... it seemed like a lynchian approximation of the lolita teenpop aesthetic sold so effectively by britney spears a decade ago. and i think this uncomfortable, dissonant quality was both intentional and, as adam said, related to drugs.

Isn't that a wee bit presumptuous to claim your own personal pronoun? Additionally (s)he wants to be called in the plural, grammatically that is rubbish. What bewilders me there is that the Guardian immediately accepts and promotes this instrumentalisation of the language for a personal cause by reprinting it. Is there no public discussion about this kind of language intervention?
