I guess acclaim like this has made NBC a 5th-place network.

you guys are kinda crazy. i watched last night's episode because of the praise you guys were giving it... it's... well, it looks good at least, though story-wise it's kind of the worst of Dexter?

Nhex, Friday, 10 May 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

the worst of Dexter? jesus, how much Dexter did you watch?

i've watched the first 2 eps and I'm def down with this!

I wasn't feeling Mads as Hannibal in ep 1 but I'm coming around to him in ep 2. at first he felt too cold? he wasn't calm/sincere/polite enough. but that's turning a corner now, he feels a bit more at ease. not relaxed, just calm. the only way the show really works is if he gets Hannibal right.

i love Dancy's Graham. the mannerisms really impress me, he feels so volatile and overwhelmed with restraint/control, those eyelid flickers and stammers, it all tracks.

dunno about Fishburne's crawford, he's kind of more ebullient and generally emotional than I would want him to be. but i guess I could grow to like his interpretation, since I do like old Fishy anyway.

the supporting cast are good so far! freddie's nice and squirrelly, she's well cast.

overall I am in love with how well it's shot, and how it still feels like a deliberate nod to Harris, like they haven't gone completely off the reservation with a loose 'based on' thing which is what I was worried about. feels like the people who wrote this are Harris nerds too, and that placates me a lot. Love the way they mix the procedure and quiet calm and brutality, they are doing a great job with that. and the way the music cues only come in at certain time, they're not overwhelming it with music but letting the quiet work too

UGH yes I'm super into it.

One of many reasons why Hulu is the asshole

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 May 2013 02:28 (ten years ago) link

(Not least of which is its chintzy 'oh sorry you can't run adblock software.' No, you fucker, I AM running it, so why am I even bothering with you.)

i remember loving hulu so much when it first started and was totally fine w/ watching ads, etc., but they can't even match the level of service they provided in 2008. now i just use netflix or (increasingly) just watch old episodes of moonlighting on youtube.

Uh, not really? It would've been all too easy to make Hannibal in the Dexter mould, as the weekly adventures of another wacky serial-killing vigilante, but this is not that show(thank goodness). Something the AV Club reviewer pointed out stuck with me, that there's a gravity to the way this series treats murder, which to my mind is the antithesis of Dexter's flippant approach to killing. While Hannibal is not without an(extremely mordant) sense of humour, it's almost refreshing how "serious" it feels.

Another important difference between the two shows is that Hannibal doesn't rely on it's supporting cast being utterly incompetent morons in order to maintain the status quo. I'm pretty sure it's not going to take six seasons for Will to suss out that Dr Lecter is not entirely normal.

we got to see Hannibal stone-cold killing onscreen, and finally the dynamic between him and other killers is starting to get rolling

Just started watching. didn't know this was a Bryan Fuller show! Would've watched right from the beginning if i had known. kind of the perfect guy for this, since all of his shows are obsessed with death and food.

On ep 4, this is excellent horror TV and Mikkelsen esp is great, but not sure I'm quite bowled over by it yet. It's not a completely humourless show, but there's something kind of oppressive about its seriousness - Fuller's shows have always treated death seriously (even on the saccharine Pushing Daisies), but they were usually good at finding the (very dark) comedy in it too. The constant ambient drone in the background isn't helping.

Roz, Friday, 17 May 2013 20:29 (ten years ago) link

this newest episode ramps things up quite a bit, it's starting to get a bit of a groove.

i kinda like the seriousness, it sets it apart from other tv for me.

and my god the way they shoot the food prepation, and the food in general is gorgeous. even when he's slicing up offal it's kinda grotesquely beautiful.

#moves like slasher

vg, did you ever watch Pushing Daisies? the pies always made me hungry.

re the drones: maybe it's because I've now watched five episodes in a row - the portentousness got a bit exhausting.

Roz, Friday, 17 May 2013 21:06 (ten years ago) link

yeah I did watch Pushing Daisies! for a while...I ended up dipping out after a while because it started to feel samey.

The use of Iron Butterfly in Manhunter in the deranged finale is really awesome and oddly out of step with Mann's usual type of soundtracking. Love that film.
