1. Feist "The Reminder" Low" Drums and Guns " Air "Pocket Symphony"

2. Rockism originated in the 70's/80's as an ideaology that a traditional rock set-up ( drums, bass, guitar, vocals) is the only truly authentic form of rock. Technology and help from any of its intrumental offspring are frowned upon. Rockism seemed to be a way to claim and protect the organic quality of music: humans and their intsrumetns. During that era, technology was being introduced that, even though it may have been exciting at the time for some of our greatest musicians, has proven to be detrimental to our current state of music. Of course, some have found ways of possibly bending technology to fit into "rockism". Sadly, most haven't. It reminds me of Lars Von Trier's Dogma 95 ideaology which tried through very strict guidelines to keep film "real". I think that Rockism probably came out of a very basic need to keep music sacred. However, as Lou Reed can attest, Metal music may often benefit.

3. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a201/mydogespresso/catpower.jpg

. It is maybe difficult to compare Sufjan and Deerhoof because subjectively, I don't see any real comparison. Regarding who is a better artist, well, that is subjective as well. Deerhoof definitely pushes the boundaries, but I think that in time, things with staying power are the ones termed "important" which signifies the collective zeitgeist's opinion that said artist was "better". Within those lines, Im going with Sufjan. What started out as an interesting idea ( records about states) has turned into some very satisfying output. By following constraints, I think he was able to open himself up more. This is very much like what the serialist composers did in the 50's/60's. I am interested in where he is headed, Deerhoof, not so much

5. one invite, please

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you in the past week: The Who - Quadrophenia, Bikini Kill - Pussy Whipped, The Broken West - I Can't Go On, I'll Go On

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum): I will answer this question with another question: What isn't rockism?

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power: http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2006/09/20/arts/20cat_CA0.190.jpg

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum): Deerhoof: Cute, but absurdly annoying after a while. Same goes for the whole broken-English thing that Satomi's got going on. Sufjan: Intertwines super-religious beliefs into his songs, yet I still tolerate and enjoy them, and him, immensely. And that's saying a lot.

5) How many invites do you require? One if you please. thestarposition@yahoo.com

1.) Was on vacation for a while, three uploads were the Klaxons, Myths ...., a prerelease of Neon Bible, and Maximo Park's, Our Earthly Pleasures
2) Rockism is a popularized British music and pop culture commentary on the authenticity of music culture. Popular during the late 60's and 70's, rockism was a concept of rock and pop music structure, instrumentation, and content. Electronic based music as well as instrumentation that was outside of the guitar/bass/drum/vocal concept was felt to be unauthentic. Rocksim is just a vessal of critical analysis, supposing that there is a "right" and a "wrong" way to make rock music. Its pretty much absolute bullshit (I guess i should put bollocks).
3)www.artloversnewyork.com/.../cat_power__2.jpg
4) Tough one. Both are great live and in the studio. My vote is for Sufjan, mainly because of how unbelievable Illinois was. A masterpeice of experimental folk and Americana. "Friend Opportunity" is incredible though.

1) Damiera - M(Us)Ic, A Hawk and a Hacksaw - Darkness at Noon, Dosh - The Lost Lake

2) Rockism, to me, is the correct way of looking at music and measuring the talent of an artist. Rockism is originality and creativity. It's the state of mind that inspires the artists who strive to create their own undefined sound. Unlike the mainstream bands such as Avenged Sevenfold or Atreyu, artists like Beirut or Andrew Bird go for a sound that hasn't been regurgitated over and over again by the same bands with different haircuts. One point of rockism that I do object with is that use of electric instruments fail to enhance music and are unable to convey any true passion the performer has for the music they play. I believe that electronics are valid tools for musical expression when used correctly. Rockism is the defining factor of a band's attitude toward their livelihood.

3) I refuse to take part in this fad held by the common forum junkie. If you want to refuse me access based strictly upon this refusal, well you're entitled to that and I'll accept the rejection, but analyze it for a minute.

4) It's hard to say who is better when comparing Deerhoof and Sufjan Stevens because their styles are completely different. It's almost like asking someone if The Locust or Circa Survive is better. In Deerhoof you have the happy, almost 80's trend sound going on, but with Sufjan Stevens the folk aspect of his music is stronger than anything else. Also in Deerhoof the voice is shrill and almost unpleasant to listen to while Sufjan Stevens's voice is docile and pleasing. Even as I sit here contrasting the two artists, searching for which is better, I'm at a loss. I can easily say who I enjoy listening to more, but that holds no measure to who is more talented. They are both talented in different ways and neither is better or worse.

b) first name (no surnames): Alyssa

a) Japanther - Dump the Body in Rikki Lake
b) Horse Head - Birds and Bees
c) Tap Tap - Lanzafame

2) Rockism is what we all make it out to be. It varies from person to person; Person A may say, "Well, I like Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti but I certainly do not like System of a Down." Person B is baffled and retorts, "What kind of name is Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti?! I can't believe you think you listen to good music, let me guess, is this part of your Disney Soundtrack? I‘m not hyphy and down with this Ariel the mermaid and ‘Under the Sea‘ shit." Person A stands there and thinks for a moment whether or not to beat the shit out of Person B, but instead chuckles and replies "My friend, I'm afraid you do not understand the components of rockism. You see, you listen to Panic! At the Disco. This is just like Fall! Out! Boy! But! With! Even! More! Shitty! Sounding! Band! Members! Who! All! Probably! Appeal! Just! To! 16! Year! Old! Girls! And! This!! Annoying! Exclaimation! Mark! With! No! Point! At! All!!!!!!!! Sometimes! You! Can‘t Tell! If! Panic! Fans! Are! Male! Or! Female! Because! They! All! Look! The! Same! With! Their! Haircuts!" Person B kicks Person A in the balls for being an elitist asshole [note how it is labeled Person “A” for “asshole“, and Person “B“ is probably “bisexual“ because he/she goes both ways and listens to Panic! At the Disco]. After being hit in the balls, Person A summons one of his Pokemons from his damaged balls and it damages Person B +156 HP/156. KO’d!

She hardly ever smiles like this, she‘s always half-smiling…poor Chan. But hey, you can’t pass up a face like that.

4) Oh “deer”, what a tough decision.

Deerhoof attempted something different and won me over. With Sufjan, it’s the same thing repetitively with horns, upbeat synthesizers, ode to Steven Reich and minimalism and such to me. I lost interest with Sufjan after Illinois was released; it did not contain the quality and personal musicianship he created for Michigan and Seven Swans. The songs sounded the same, but were not as captivating. So really, if I had to say which artist was better, I’d go with Deerhoof because of their judicious metamorphose and improvement upon pleasing my oxymoronic tastes of contrasting weeping guitars with gentle childlike voices. Going from “aww bunny bunny cutie bunny” to “fucking rabbit eating my entrails while ripping out my teeth” provided me with an insight of the improvement upon musicianship. From adorable, panda-cuddly vocals, Deerhoof transformed themselves to playing a tragic-sounding lament played at the funeral of a road kill rabbit.

Crabcigar,

We at Oink sense something special here. Rather than simply gift you with a single invite we may have grander designs for you. To wit, you might be the sort of material we're looking for as a Probationary Oink Administrator.

We will update you at this location after all administrators confer.
