Using per36 stats to favorably assess a player who, throughout his career, has been knocked for being a really bad basketball player once he hits his exhaustion point is a really bad idea. It's like arguing that a baseball reliever/middleman w/ a 2.20 ERA should be starting because, duh, his ERA is 2.20 and why wouldn't that hold up over 9 innings.

basketball players are not like pitchers, maybe mcgee is an exception cause of conditioning or asma or w/e but i kinda doubt it, per 36 numbers so long as you have a big enough sample size tend to work v well

i think javale should get more minutes, tho i do think kosta is better. i'm more concerned with getting a real shooter

again, in his 8 highest minute games this season he produced right in line with his per 36.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 3 May 2013 22:56 (ten years ago) link

man kev I would have said that koufos should start but two consecutive playoff stinkbombs has me pretty frustrated with him

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 3 May 2013 22:59 (ten years ago) link

xps Right-- I'm just saying that presenting per36 as anything other than a hint of possible production -- esp. for a player like Javale w/ his conditioning probs -- doesn't make much sense. But yeah, agree that Javale shouldn't had more burn during the regular season, if for no other reason for experience / conditioning for playoff basketball.

Anyway, got a kinda cool Ballet Life story. Was hanging w/ a bball player dude a few nights ago who played w/ Will Bynum. Dude and his buddy were out w/ Bynum and a bunch of friends at a club, and Bynum buys everyone beers. Dude's friend accidentally drops his beer and is all Oh fuck, major faux-pas, Bynum's gonna be pissed. Bynum does get pissed ... because dude's friend was worried about it. Bynum methodically goes around the group of like ten people and, one by one, takes their beers and pours them all out on the floor. Then buys everyone another round :)

Broussard doing courside for Indy/Atl, would love to see someone shoehorn in a few non-sequitur words of support for Jason Collins.

I never knew abt kilmer, need to up my twitter game, apparently the iron sheik is all-time also

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 4 May 2013 00:02 (ten years ago) link

isn't the thing w/ javale that his teams have never been better with him on the court? like you can mince his individual numbers as finely as you want, but it's hard to find evidence that he really helps his team on a consistent basis. i buy the argument that he could play more minutes but i don't think he's some kind of victim or martyr. it's not like he hasn't been given chances. he does some things well in spurts but also does a lot of things poorly mostly all of the time.

Some of my favorite moments on The Bugle have been them discovering/talking about Iron Sheik tweets.

i guess i should clarify here that i mean "helps his team on a consistent basis more than his teammates do"

The problem I have with this line of thinking is that Javale is getting better but he's still being treated like the complete maniac from his first two seasons. And since he's been in Denver, has he really been given his chances? He'll play so well every now and then that Karl is forced to give in and play him in the clutch (even this is like pulling teeth of course) but he's never given a chance to follow up on that.

George Karl is obsessed with plus/minus and that's the fairest thing you can say about Javale not getting more minutes. But we've seen him get benched plenty for mistakes that would be shrugged off if Brewer or Iguodala made them (we also saw Fournier get this treatment in the playoffs) and it's fair to question whether there's a double standard there. And the way the media treats him kinda speaks for itself.
