the best player in baseball would help his team, and that includes not leaving his starting pitcher susceptible to getting triple-teamed.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 26 July 2004 14:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Did someone order a tasteless reference?

Kaz Tadano (mattbot), Monday, 26 July 2004 14:56 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah that was a batting practice pitch for ya, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:00 (nineteen years ago) link

"the best player in baseball" = highest salary obviously.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:03 (nineteen years ago) link

VB, I was going to include a lame lengthy disclaimer re: big pecs != HR power, but, shit, if you have that sort of physique, don't swing DOWN on the ball like a Walt Hriniak reject. Rob Deer that shit, Kapler!

Also, I thought the pitch hit Senora A-Rod (oh snap!) on the elbow. Regardless, that was a strange time for "the best player in baseball" to Cowboy Up to the original Marlboro Men. Also, I've never heard of a team headhunting a player for hitting the game-winning SINGLE in the previous contest. Unless Bob Brenley was the manager.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:08 (nineteen years ago) link

gygax, seriously, WHY DO YOU CARE

i mean, in that other thread you were hinting that jeter might be a better shortstop, which would've gotten you strung up or worse in most parts a year ago. and he's had an off year, but it's not THAT off.

first of all, the best player in baseball tag is 75% agent hype from his free agency period after the 2000 season, a season in which he really WAS the best player in baseball. the tag stuck because in every year since he's been the best player in the american league, and the best all-around player in the game. even if he IS past his prime, you have to a allow a window for that perception to fade (especially now that he's a yankee(?)). and i'd still say he's probably the best all-around player in the game. IT IS JUST NOT A BIG DEAL OK. this is just some my-guy's-dick-is-bigger-than-yours-and-well-i-hate-the-yankees-too thing i'm sure, but gimme a break, like bonds is underrated by anybody?? get over it.

(and now i've really opened myself up so you're gonna continue to pull that shit just cuz, grr)

getting on topic now, i'm glad a-rod did what he did, and i don't think it was less about HIM being hit than it was about the yankees getting drilled left and right all year (and all last) by the sox and left unable to retaliate because of warnings issued. if a pitcher couldn't put a stop to it, a player had to, and a-rod did for this series. tell em when enough is enough, you know?

John (jdahlem), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:41 (nineteen years ago) link

as a red sox fan i for one want to thank a-rod for waking this team up. they've been sleepwalking since may day and that fight was the first sign of life they've exhibited all summer. i'm actually hopeful they can win the wild card now.

thanks a-rod!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I ain't thankin' no one for no thing until the Sox can actually beat the Orioles.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:33 (nineteen years ago) link

hi john,

are there any yankees that are having "all-star seasons" other than rivera?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Tom Gordon, the best reliever in baseball.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/rrereport04.html

A-Rod, Sheffield and Posada are all in the AL top 15 in Equivalent Average. Even as a Yankee hater, I can acknowledge they're legit All-Stars. A-Rod falls short only by his previous Olympian standards, and unlike hstencil, I don't think he's overpaid by a cent.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

of course he's overpaid, just not by the yankees, who're paying low market value.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Judging by Tom Gordon's career #s (and there's quite a sample size in his case), he's due for quite a few shellings.

But John seriously why you want to get ALL CAPS on me?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Former Cardinals prospect Adam Kennedy, currently an Anaheim Angel, went to war with Rangers catcher Gerald Laird while the teams were warming up for their Tuesday night game.

"I've seen a lot of brawls," former Angel Bobby Grich told he Los Angeles Times, "but never during batting practice."

So what happened? The night before, Laird accused Kennedy of leaning into a pitch, hoping to get hit with the bases loaded to force in a run. He told him as much during that at-bat.

Kennedy sought to revisit the issue the next day . . . and one thing led to another. It started when Kennedy glared at his accuser.

"Do you have a problem?" Laird asked.

"Don't be trying to show me up," Kennedy said.

And then the two became entangled. Rangers outfielder Brian Jordan, the former Cardinal, jumped in and applied a headlock on Kennedy as the two teams converged.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:48 (nineteen years ago) link

As even the sponges on BBTN pointed out, it's because Kendall is one of those assholes who stands on top of the plate and leans into pitches... cf Carl Everett.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:32 (seventeen years ago) link

you're insane if you think it wasn't barrett's fault.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:54 (seventeen years ago) link

i know it was barrett's fault, and he appeared to after the game.

We know from the brawl chart in BB Between the Numbers they don't "fire up" win totals of crappy teams, too.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Yay to the girl in the black top and the 70's-80's style White Sox cap = I'd hit it.

This is a great picture, but the fan reactions are a reminder of my unfulfilled dream to be in attendance at a true bench-clearing brawl.

There's a better photo out there that has Pierzynski's undeterred face a fraction of second before Barret's fist hits it.

lol the one ump looks like he ate a couple fans during the brawl

( ´_ゝ˙) (Dr. Phil), Thursday, 6 August 2009 04:20 (fourteen years ago) link

The huge ump who hits the turf is John McSherry, who died on the field of a heart attack on Opening Day 1996 in Cincinnati.

What doesn't that brawl have? Bat wielding, fan trying to swipe helmet, fans in cuffs, multiple Tim Flannery eruptions, etc.

maybe not... I think that's future Yankee blowhard John Sterling in the Braves' booth.

I know the '84 Padres were filled with crazed John Birchers, I think Flannery was one of them.

From the SI vault:

Umpire-in-chief John McSherry, who ejected 13 players altogether and cleared both dugouts after the ninth-inning fracas, said afterward that this game was "the worst thing I've seen in my life" and that it had "set baseball back 50 years." Williams, who is 55, hasn't been in the game that long, but he's definitely a baseball man of the old school. "We had some honor to defend," he said at a press conference Friday. "Perez is a headhunter. There's no question we went after him. I'm responsible for it. I'll accept the penalty, but I think it's pretty steep." Perez, who had hit only two batters in his previous 135 innings, denied he had been throwing at Wiggins, but was fined $300.

I don't think Flannery was one, but I could be wrong. Eric Show was the ringleader.
