That's where I went, Zebedee. They must have sold out for a while. Mind you, I didn't ask for fear of ridicule. Who was it that said the best music makes you fell like you're sixteen?

haha, I want to ask them if they had the new Jazzman records 7" with France Gall on the A-side (it wasn't in the 7" racks) but was too scared to ask. are we sad or what?

HMV.co.uk says this was released Monday just gone. It's £13.99. I need it, don't I?

You can get it cheaper if you shop around. I don't know what the four bonus tracks are doing on it - I'd rather they weren't there at all. Not that they're bad, they just don't belong there, being from entirely the wrong period an' all.

three weeks pass...
Who does the DJ voicing on Dub Organizer? Anyone know? Dillinger possibly?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, Dillinger!

I had a listen to this on a listening post. It was good. But I didn't buy it. I did get Wailing Souls at Channel One though. 9.99 at HMV. Also available in the same shop for 16.99.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks, Tim!

trojan have bunged out Blackbd Jungle themselves as part of a 2CD set with Cloak and Dagger and Revolution Dub.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Hm I wonder if someone's pirating something?

I understand that BJD is a recognised classic but I love C&D more.

PJM: how's the mastering on that Wailing Souls comp? What I know of the content (I suppose about a third of it) is tremendous.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I love Revolution Dub the best. Funny thing is the Trojan release that I'm talking about doesn't look like a Trojan release - also it was £10 in HMV - if they'd have stuck it in a card sleeve in the new Trojan 'brand' style they could have charged £15, as with the recent T. Zukie, Sly and Robbie, etc releases. Wierd.

Less than a month after shelling out a tenner for "Blackboard Jungle Dub", this appears. Curses on you Trojan, you incompetent schwein you. But actually no, because I didn't own either "Cloak and Dagger" or "Revolution Dub" before so didn't mind getting three brilliant albums on one CD for 8 quid (from Avalance in Edinburgh folks). If you don't buy this CD you're all mad, madd I tell you. "Cloak and Dagger" is great, halfway between an Upsetters instrumental album and a dub album - actually it is a dub album but because it was released a year before "dub albums" were invented it's not usually referred to as one. "Revolution Dub" is fabulous, but where can one find the original of "Woman Gotta Have It", I believe it's by Bunny Clarke??!?!?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I have it on a Trojan LP called "Shocks of Mighty" which came out in about 1987 or '88. Yes it's Bunny Clarke. That same LP has a murderously good version of "Be Thankful (For What You've Got)" cunningly called "Be Thankful".

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh man, got to find a copy of that "Shocks of Mighty" album, I love the dub version and I love Bobby Womack's orig.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Listening to it on headphones, the usual scratchy seven-inch distorted disc dubs that Pressure Sounds fans know and love so much. Do they deliberately go out and look for extra-knackered records?

I don't usually moan about this sort of thing in case it makes me look less hardcore.

It's still nice to listen to, though.

You can get it on vinyl too, which saves you the trouble of knackering your own. It looks nicer on vinyl.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Pardon me, I went looking for a picture of the LP, and this: http://www.upsetter.net/scratch/disco/collections/collect_shocks.html says that "Be Thankful" is Bunny Clarke but "Woman Got To Have It" is Jimmy Riley. Easy mistake to make. And it's on Attack rather than Trojan but they are the same thing anyway...

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:59 (nineteen years ago) link

It sounds more like Bunny Clarke than Jimmy Riley tho

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I have got BE THANKFUL by DONOVAN CARLOS on RANDY'S 17 NORTH PARADE. On a different CD, IMPACT!, the same song is credited to DONOVAN CARLESS. Crazy, crazy, mental shit.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:08 (nineteen years ago) link

that "shocks of mighty" album is genius, except some of the dub versions are mixed with the original tracks into one big long track. bit annoying if your making mixtapes!

ten years pass...

this is a fantastic record

i've been digging into reggae lately, after really taking a liking to the studio one soul jazz comps from this year and last year, and figuring out where to find sounds i like, how to steer clear of too-ploddy roots reggae.

and i've listened to some dub before, late 90s, early 00s, on the back of mad professor dubbing 'protection' probably, and i could like it some and understand the appeal -

but this record actually sounds like all the stuff you read about dub, the playing-the-studio stuff, instruments popping in and out of the soundfield, drum hits given their own little moments of presence - not just watery echoing and big bass. but what i like most is that you can hear all these little scraps that sound like early 70s-mid 70s playing, highlighted for their lyricism.
