they used to be in the yummy fur ? but the yummy fur were quite good!

my friend's quote at w/e was "franz ferdinand ? more like les ferdinand".

not funny, but nor are they.

i hear they're supposed to be much better live than on record. so far i've got the Darts of Pleasure EP and like it a bit, so if the above is true, i'll be quite happy if i get to see them. and they'll be here in March. so. :)

janni (janni), Monday, 26 January 2004 04:32 (twenty years ago) link

From a semi-attentive first listen, the single is the the best thing on the album by quite some distance.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:43 (twenty years ago) link

I randomly saw them at T in the Park last year on the wee bands stage and quite liked them in their angular pop music stompy disco german-ness. The ToTP performance was cool in its complete lack of polish; they did try to do moves together but didn't really pull it off. Best of all is their miniature gay Jim Carey/Kyle MacLachlan guitar player. Quite entertaining in a big headed sorta way.

Does anyone else find it really bizarre that they are in the top 5?

hmmmm, Monday, 26 January 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Franz Ferdinand - if The Strokes could play their instruments a bit better.

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:25 (twenty years ago) link

they would be a lot more boring

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:26 (twenty years ago) link

So, if supposedly The Strokes sound JUST like VU/Television, and Franz Ferdinand sounds EXACTLY like The Strokes, why did we cut out the middle man and say Franz Ferdinand sounds like VU/Television?

Oh right, because they don't.

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

I can't see the link between FF and the strokes, really (and I like both...maybe I AM the missing link then !?)
FF haven't released an album yet, have they ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago) link

The Strokes would never sully themselves with anything as vulgar as a tempo change.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 26 January 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago) link

Franz Ferdinand sound like Television.

There.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

Ummm....no they don't.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

Neither FF nor the strokes sound like television...they wish !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago) link

Franz Ferdinand sound like Cud or Thousand Yard Stare.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Monday, 26 January 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago) link

Well I like Cud, but TYS...that's a pretty cold insult.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago) link

Still haven't heard FF. I hope they sound like Thousand Yard Stare. TYS were extremely underrated. You've obviously never heard Comeuppance.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago) link

TYS had at least two great songs

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

"So, if supposedly The Strokes sound JUST like VU/Television, and Franz Ferdinand sounds EXACTLY like The Strokes, why did we cut out the middle man and say Franz Ferdinand sounds like VU/Television?

-- LiquidTide"

Nobody is saying anyone sounds EXACTLY like anyone else.

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

i disagree with Tico's view on tempo changes naturally - 'Batdance', 'Bo Rap' and er, 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do For That)' all cases in point

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

Stupid, read the first line of this thread. as well as all of the old Strokes threads. I finally got a copy of this album today. I actually wouldn't compare them to the Strokes at all. Except for the fact that you, you know, guitars, bands, cute boys, 4/4 time.

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago) link

Okay. Fine. I'M not saying that. I'M saying they sound remarkably similar, and are extremely dull in EXACTLY the same way that The Strokes are.

I hate it when people claim band a doesn't sound like band b simply because everyone else is saying they do. Sometimes, everybody says something because it's so fucking obvious...

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:35 (twenty years ago) link

I dunno if it sounds like the Strokes, who I've pretty well managed to avoid, but it sure sucks ass.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:52 (twenty years ago) link

Thousand Yard Stare were awful.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 11:04 (twenty years ago) link

I guess i'm just not used to ILMers so openly deluding themselves.

and how long have you been posting here? it's practically all that happens here.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

oh we're not so bad

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago) link

i'm probably including myself in this, too, btw

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago) link

FF = a little = Television.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago) link

They're boring, I'm amazed that many people are clamouring for okish indie rock

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago) link

that that that

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago) link

surely they are the first band ever band to have been influenced by the monochrome set that hasn't actually included members of the monochrome set? this cannot be all bad. also really i must say they sound nothing like any band mentioned on this thread with the exception of josef k.

Body: Ok, so my good friend turned me onto this new band Franz Ferdinand. And may I say... freakin' AWESOME!! It has been so long since I heard songs sooo good and sooo rockin' that I have to blast it and actually jump around and dance and shake my booty! Seriously, this band rocks, and I mean that cool old fashioned funk edgey raw type of rock, with the catchiest hooks, but pure music all the way thru. An album that will make your head bop and foot tap involuntarily, for sure. Everyone should run out and buy it NOW!! You will NOT be dissappointed!

OMG ROCKIN' SHUT UP AND DIE

hey everyone i have the answer.

Strokes, VU, Franz Ferdinand and Television sound like:

SHIT!

1 for 4 there, Chaki. Tough luck. Please enjoy our consolation prize, a three-year-old case of Surge(tm).

hey im not homophobic but i aint into surge

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

i was roundly disappointed upon first listen. strokes 2.0. hardly imaginative.

YET.

now i cannot for the life of me get "take me out" to stop playing in my brain. i think FF has probably cooked up the sweetest dish of 80s pop revival imaginable. i'm so like totally hurdling somewhere between the planes of "sunday bloody sunday", "puttin on the ritz", and "another one bites the dust" and the midget ghosts of kajagoogoo are dancing on my buddha belly.

for sure.

Franz Ferdinand will never be on VH-1's "I Love the 00's". They suck.

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:49 (twenty years ago) link

Surely this band doesn't sound like The Monochrome Set though. Or do they? There couldn't be very many bands smart and talented enough to rip them off successfully. If they could, I might need to hear them.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago) link

I need to listen to that Monochrome Set disc I have again. I quite like it.

jon do you have a keytar?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 13 March 2004 22:12 (twenty years ago) link

Franz Ferdinand are often compared to the Monochrome Set and Josef K. and Orange Juice.

Man people I know often argue that they sound like none of those awesome bands.

I've only ever heard the Morgan Geist remix.

Which sounds really cool.

More bands should sound like the Monochrome Set.

Belle and Sebastian, at times, like parts of the 3 eps that came out after If You're Feeling Sinister, had that El/early Cherry Red vibe, but most people didn't notice because they were too busy comparing them to Nick Drake and the Kinks. They even name-checked Felt. I'm really tired.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 13 March 2004 22:19 (twenty years ago) link
