yes, that is the consensus. my theories as to why:

1) it's the least "pop", and so of least interest in the critical sense. this ties into my pet conspiracy theory that kompakt gets lots of attention because there's lots to write about. i don't think speicher courts our intellectual kicks as much as other kompakt releases. to use an analogy from the language of, um, fashion magazines it's certainly the least directional collection. ("pop" is probably the wrong word to use up there, but "diverse" doesn't quite nail it either)

2) aside from "love is stronger than pride", "fieber" and "regensburg", most of the tracks go nowhere - although i have heard love from various sources for "supertiel" (nope don't get it), "irre" and "musick".

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

"Vision 03" and "Unter Null" are great too!

But I think Vahid is mainly right - a lot of those Reinhard Voight-style bangers don't seem to have much purpose except banging, so they're harder to latch onto or become emotionally involved with.

Has anyone else heard Wighnomy Bros' "Bodyrock"? Luvvit luvvit luvvit.

the pop aspect of Kompakt is so insidious. Coming from an almost purposely anti pop viewpoint, the dance aspect interested me at first but its the hooks that keep me coming back.

now I am finding myself slipping into pop and grooving when I hear kylie

Ha ha another victim succumbs to the Freaky Trigger ethos!

alext (alext), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

'irre' was perhaps the biggest club track of 2002 round my way.

stirmonster, Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:39 (twenty years ago) link

i put a post on my blog about kompakt and pop over the weekend, it's not that intricately thought out but it works...

"it's not that intricately thought out but it works..."

it = Kompakt or your blog?

"i put a post on my blog about kompakt and pop over the weekend, it's not that intricately thought out but it works"

hey that is a great post! It makes the point that I was trying to above, the pop is what keeps you coming back.

Coversely, and quite wonderfully, my wife, who is an avowed Kylie fan, and who rarely listens to any kind of music, especially dancefloor/electronic music, thinks this is excellent. Check that universal appeal!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

I thought your wife was some sorta Punk Planet indie person.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

Well, whatever made you think that? Cos she's from Chicago?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:57 (twenty years ago) link

No, because you said something once about her making fun of you because you didn't know what Punk Planet was!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:59 (twenty years ago) link

I think you have me confused with someone else, Ned. Avril Lavigne, perhaps?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:02 (twenty years ago) link

I prefer my bias, I like creating a fictional you. DANCE FOR ME, puppet!

haven't heard the mix yet (i mentioned upthread that a record shop in dublin was supposed to have it for a tenner, but then when i went in they didn't have it) but i'm listening to the track bring me closer by richard davis which is appearently on it, (its on the free cd with jockey slut this month, and yes i know everyone hates jockey slut and its the dance nme and all but i quite like it and am a sucker for half decent magazines)and its really really good
the strings are excellent

robin (robin), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

the rest of the (jockey slut) cd is awful though
who the fuck are all these people?(john cale aside)
usually theres a few good tracks on their free cds

robin (robin), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

I'm listening to it now and I really like it. Also, on the Fabric website it says Mayer's favorite band is Alan Parsons Project. Also, I concur re: Richard Davis and excellent strings

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

After getting it on Friday and having the weekend to think of it there are quite a few qreat tunes:

the Heiko Voss is insidious
Villalobos - Easy Lee is just cool
my wife loves the Superpitcher track the best
&
Le Dust Sucker has something to it that just works right where it is in the mix

the whole thing does have kinda of a goth/industrial/pop/house sheen to it which is just kinda like magic

hector (hector), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

where's the love for the m83 track

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:37 (twenty years ago) link

c'mon i just got it 2 days ago, i didn't want to gush

hector (hector), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

The M83 thing is brilliant, do you know anything else about them, Ronan? I downloaded the original and it's not as good :(

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

yes it is!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:49 (twenty years ago) link

anyway, they're not a dance act.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:49 (twenty years ago) link

when i put in "M83 and benoit villeneuve" into google there you were at number 2 Ronan so you must be giving big love to this track.

by the way did you ever live in london?

hector (hector), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 02:40 (twenty years ago) link

Having reevaluated, the original is probably "as good".. it just wasn't what I was expecting when I downloaded it, so I didn't give it the attention it needed. I still prefer the version on the mix - i need that bouncy rhythm, I don't have time for build-ups!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 02:55 (twenty years ago) link

I got the CD and it is fucking ace.

But it made me realise how ignorant I am about this kind of music -- I don't even know what to *call* it: it's some sort of house, right? (and yeah yeah names aren't important, but they at least send you to the right section of the record shop). Forgive my ignorance, but where would I go to find more stuff like it?

alext (alext), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 11:31 (twenty years ago) link

haha Hector I wrote about it on my blog so maybe! Yeah I lived in London for about 2 months in 2002. I am a frequent visitor also, why do you ask?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 11:44 (twenty years ago) link

i'm w. sonny on the m83 issue.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 11:56 (twenty years ago) link

"w. sonny" ??

i've seen a lot a raves for m83 off-ILM. primarily by indie types (i make no judgements in saying that).

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 12:57 (twenty years ago) link

I lived there for a while back in the mid 90s or so and met the only person I have ever known named Ronan. So I was just looking for the degrees of separation. Last time I saw him there was 98 though so it must not be you.

He was also way into dance music.

tried it again today; track 1 ("i think about you (Geiger Mix)") is crushing me.

This is getting a new life on the walkman and might take me through the Spring. Awesome awesome.
I've been trying to mix Bring Me Closer with We Need a Resolutin but somehow it doesn't work that well..

well, i still prefer the 1st craig richards cd (fabric 15). I still think 'old school baby' is just ok-ish.

I heard this at a HIPSTER COFFEE SHOP yesterday.

I knew that I knew it, but I couldn't place it right away. It sounds better with headphones, I think.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

as opposed to reading about it on a hipster message board?

Right at divsion and damen in chicago, this hipster coffee shop can get your buzz on. Serving some of the strongest brews of regular coffee I've ever had, while being super tasty at that, Jinx brings a level of laid back that is so desperately needed at times. They also serve bagels and sandwiches for those in need of some grubbin. You can catch me there most mornings on my way to work or sometimes in the afternoons when I need my fix. Sometimes they have small shows for bands. Come check it out, mehbe you'll see me there (but you won't know who I am )

I dunno man, last time I was there (which was a while back when I lived in the hood), I caught a real "hipper-than-thou" hipster vibe from the place...
The coffee was good. The food was good. But the people seemed kinda snobby. Or maybe I'm just not cool enough.

I have listened to this six times in the last two days. the westbam track - actually that whole first four-five tracks, just fantastic.

is bookending your mix with two versions of the same track sort of cheating a bit?
