i didn't ask (i agreed w/him), and i don't know him well so i'm afraid i can't answer that.

There's a promo-only M83 remix of Goldfrapp's "Black Cherry" which is quite nice - if not quite as nice as the Lawrence remix of the same track.

i like this album, but i agree with the sickly comment above. there's something curiously cheesy about it and not in the good way.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:19 (nineteen years ago) link

"sickly" = the textures, the sounds they use themselves make me feel a bit...off.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:20 (nineteen years ago) link

"run into flowers" and the jackson remix are clearly some sort of works of genius, tho.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the cheesy part is that it's an electronics album that tries to be a guitar album (yes, this is the whole point, but it's the un-authetic sounds which are the source of the cheese). Cranking it up and getting into the hugeness of it without trying to think about what instruments are being used really helps reduce the cheese factor.

In a similar way, the drum machines on S3's "Playing With Fire" bug me a lot, particularly on tracks like Suicide. So I try letting them recede into the listening background.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:38 (nineteen years ago) link

i know exactly what jess is talking about i think it is an intentional effort on the band's part to produce those retro tones (cf: every trendy dance track of the last 3 years).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:12 (nineteen years ago) link

i liked this album the first time i heard it, but now i just feel the same sweetness-twinkle-overload as mentioned above. i found it used, so i'm not even thinking about buying the us release of it, as more extra tracks might make me ill.
i do like it - in small doses - but its just so dramatic that i can't handle it for too long.
also, i just went to the website (ilovem83.com)(weird) and i almost cried b/c i thought it was taking over my computer.

stolenbus (stolenbus), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:34 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm upset that there's a great deal of love for m83 (and the rest of the gooom disques crew, to a lesser extent) but not much for DDAMAGE.

the high points on ddamage's "radio ape" are at least as good as those on the m83 album.

i think the problem might be a wee bit of overexposure to IDM on the part of the indie-mag electronica reviewers who get stuff like m83 dumped in their boxes. if you've been ignoring IDM for the last few years - as any sane person would - and enjoy m83 you will probably find ddamage well worth your time.

and lest i piss off any indie-mag reviewers i will point out that the esteemed dominique leone called my attention to this album.

Is talking like a sci-fi movie chimp part of having "humor" here?

No, really.

Anyhow, regarding M83, I think they're a very terrible case of production over songwriting ( a la Four Tet ), though maybe I'm biased, I've never been too much of a fan of the shoegazer deal.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I only listen to the album version of "Run Into Flowers", but man have I listened to it alot.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Although one might enjoy repeated headphone listens of Dead Cities,..., I can't recommend listening to it (from front to back, repeat) loudly, via a proper home stereo. Walls of sound are, generally speaking, more effective when listened to as they were intended.

Laptop speakers don't/won't suffice.

nader (nader), Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooops, I meant, can't recommend it highly enough.

nader (nader), Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I've talked about them on another thread but they're a band that were okay the one time I listened to the album -- but I haven't been compelled to give even an individual song a listen to since. Fennesz is far more interesting to my mind if we're talking laptopgaze

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:52 (nineteen years ago) link

This record (and to a lesser extent, the latest Ulrich Schnauss) leaves me with the same feeling that I get if I eat an entire family-size bag of Starburst. The first bit of it was sweet and delicious, but after about the halfway mark I feel disgusted and sick, unable to eat anything sugary or otherwise for quite a while.

bohford, Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Fennesz bundles insulin with sugar...or something.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard this loud through an incredible system and i still can't get enough. i've heard less than spectacular reviews of their live sets but it's not enough to keep me excited from seeing them next month with ullrich schnauss.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:05 (nineteen years ago) link

re: Ned's comments. It's funny but, much more than any latter day "shoegaze" band or Fennesz, I feel that "Run Into Flowers" (and maybe some Cornelius and Avalanches moments) really is trying to build upon what Kevin Shields was up to all those years ago. Someone like Fennesz has textures that are really interesting/beautiful, but the overall effect is lacking when it comes to the melody and emotion that were integral to MBV (though 'endless summer' was a step in the right direction).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Well to me Venice aims much more so at a way of manipulating those textures to good effect than Endless Summer, though I've admittedly heard far less of the latter album -- that was sort of an in-one-ear-out-the-other-listen, and I remember being vaguely annoyed that it didn't live up to what was promised for it. Venice, on the other hand, really grips me and makes me want to relisten to it, which is always my particular sign that an album has connected -- it's not enough to vaguely admire it, it *must* prompt relistening on a regular basis. As such it's probably still my favorite album of this year. There's emotion I sense there in more cryptic fashions perhaps, but the sense I felt from the M83 album -- rather like Schnauss's from last year, actually -- was of an overdetermined structure, where build becomes rote. The exception was that long final stretch of a track, where M83 broke free into a massive extended coda -- that's what really caught my ear from the listen, to give it its due.

Still, I'll see the show next month with both them and Schnauss, I figure. It might actually work more for me live!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:37 (nineteen years ago) link

At least (several of) you have the option of seeing (and further evaluating) M83 live...

Ian Faith: The Boston gig has been cancelled.

David St. Hubbins: What?

Ian Faith: Yeah. I wouldn't worry about it though, it's not a big college town.

Before the Dawn Heals Us is fantastic! Much of it is very propulsive, and of course it sounds amazing. Definitely in my top 10 of the year (whereas the last album was mostly just "Run Into Flowers" for me).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 14 November 2004 03:56 (nineteen years ago) link

"Don't Save Us from the Flames" is almost unbearably good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 14 November 2004 04:25 (nineteen years ago) link

A new album, eh? Hmmm. Your praise intrigues me (since I thought the last one was mostly just there, like you).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 06:23 (nineteen years ago) link

"gone" off of the last record is the best song on the album (yes, better than "run into flowers").

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

It's always a toss-up for me between "Gone", "Run into Flowers" and "0078h". And sometimes "Noise". I think those were the singles, so perhaps this is no surprise.

And I got my hands (er, my hard drive) on the new album today ... I will listen later ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Spencer re: Definitely in my top 10 of the year

That will be the year of 2005 ! the album gets released in January 2005 ;-)

Yeah, I just saw that on the gooom site! ILM runs on it's own calendar of course.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

on first listen I'm not hearing much that differentiates this from the last album, which is too bad. Maybe it will grow on me. As gygax would say, So... much.... rock.

I'm still miffed about their using backing tapes to do the synths live, which was lame.

Anyway I'll probably grow to like this album more, but it's not as exciting as the last one was.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm with Spencer on this one ... it's an astounding album, and it leaves the last album in its dust. The flimsy drum machine sounds that I was complaining about upthread are gone (or at least, they sound a lot more like real drums this time), the rhythms are tighter and more aggressive. If "Dead Cities" was M83 trying to replicate "Loveless", then this one is M83 trying to replicate "Isn't Everything".

More precisely, the closest kin to this record is Sianspheric's "There's Always Someplace You'd Rather Be", which also tried to be "Isn't Anything" when it wasn't trying to be Slowdive's "Pygmalion".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:24 (nineteen years ago) link

"A Guitar and a Heart" is cheesy though. The song and the title.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:29 (nineteen years ago) link

what is THIS? I've never heard of this! I must hear it immediately.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Strange then, how "Lower Your Eyelids to Die With the Sun" is not just a gorgeous, heartbreaking closer but also has a title to die for (har har).

(xpost -- Kyle, they're a Canadian band on the Sonic Unyon label. The album came out in 1998. There must be an AMG entry for them. All three of their albums are well worth your time)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:37 (nineteen years ago) link

As gygax would say, So... much.... rock.

That's why I like it so much. My main problem with shoegaze related music is the lack of rock, the lack of propulsion, especially in opposition with slower/quieter moments within the same song. Fennesz (and other laptoppers) can be beautiful and/or powerful, but there's not enough there for me to love - Endless Summer worked for me because the songs were there. I guess as much as I love 'noise', it's not enough by itself - I still need songs (which is why I loved Dntel's "Dream of Evan and Chan") and the noise must still serve the purpose of the emotion, or the melody or the groove. You could say that's it's one thing to love the feeling of the ocean, but I guess I still need to swim. Slowdive and similar slowgaze music is often too plodding and often has this odd goth affectation (which I think Ned is more fond of than I).

If "Dead Cities" was M83 trying to replicate "Loveless", then this one is M83 trying to replicate "Isn't Everything".

An interesting equation - I'd say they get even closer to the highs of Loveless on this record (although there's nothing identikit about it). They've found their own songwriting here - a continuation of "Run Into Flowers". I'll definitely have more specific things to say as I listen more.

Also, I don't really get what's cheesy about "A Guitar and a Heart", song or title-wise.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Very, very well worth your time. I highly agree with Barry's assessment of Sianspheric, they are the spiff.

You are correct, sir! But if Slowdive started off Cure they ended up Durutti.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:43 (nineteen years ago) link

The guitar solo and the more mechanized-sounding beats on "A Guitar and a Heart" scream "take me back to 1983!" to me. It's like I'm listening to Loverboy or something. Although I'm going through the album a second time now and I like it a little more ... once the song builds up more and the song becomes denser I find myself getting more into it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:51 (nineteen years ago) link

So did "Digital Love"!

(although yeah, I had actually skimmed past the beginning part before which takes a bit of getting used to. I think it's *classic* by the end!)

There are some really odd voiceover bits on this that I think people are going to hate! Also, I think some of the vocals will bug some. Luckily for me, I love it all!

okay if there's a song that is reminiscent of Kim & Jessie (probably my all time fav M83 tune), I'm interested. I hated Junk so much I practically stopped listening to this dude's music entirely

Finally getting around to Fantasy and it's kind of boring? I mean, sonically it's a massive improvement on Junk and it hits the right mood, but it also kind of feels like just going through the M83 motions. I don't know, it just made me want to go back to the earlier albums instead.
