Shaggy - "It Wasn't Me"

The Bloodhound Gang - "Your Only Friends are Make-Believe"

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Sunday, 3 November 2002 21:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

"In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins"

YES! Me too!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 3 November 2002 22:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Di just made me remember mine...

I usually can't stand Sleater-Kinney, but "You're No Rock'N'Roll Fun" is sheer brilliance.

kate, Sunday, 3 November 2002 23:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Prince - "When Doves Cry"
U2 - "New Year's Day"
I like "Summer of '69" and "Heaven"

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 3 November 2002 23:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

Another vote for Summer of 69, too.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 3 November 2002 23:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

4'39'' by John Cage. Though I have never listened to it (kind of difficult to hear it) and I probably got the title wrong. But that's probably the best he has ever done. Silence is sexy sometimes.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 3 November 2002 23:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

'into the groove' by madonna and 'the mercy seat' by nick cave

angelo (angelo), Sunday, 3 November 2002 23:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Your choice would almost fall into covers I love of songs by artists I hate, Angelo.
Into the Groove covered by Sonic Youth
Mercy Seat covered by Johnny Cash (though I don't hate Nick Cave and only hated Johnny Cash up till this album)

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 3 November 2002 23:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ooh, I really like "The Bad Touch" and hate Bloodhound Gang. ALSO "My Console" by Eiffel 85 or whatever they are called is fantastic. ALSO "Separate Ways" is the greatest song of all time, but Journey are the worst band ever. And the video is pure glory.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 4 November 2002 03:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

one month passes...
New Kid in Town by the goddamned Eagles. Great chord progression, horrible band

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Otherside" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Excellent harmonies (or whatever you'd call them in this case) during the last few choruses.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

That first single from The Eminem Show has an unstoppable hook, and that bassline is just retarded, dawg. I feel like admitting this makes me a better person, somehow.

Also: Keep on Dancing or whatever by No Doubt, sounds like some German electro from two years ago. Quality. And the second single from Jimmy Eat World's new album, that's pretty neat too.

Unlike some of you I have been gifted with an inborn hatred for the voices of Bryan Adams and Phil Collns, helping me to at least preserve that portion of my hipness no matter what.

Tom Millar (Millar), Saturday, 14 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

any good song (and they've all made a bunch) by the Police, U2, Sonic Youth, Pavement, David Bowie, LeTigre, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Blur, Beck and Moby.

There's probably other artists I'm forgetting.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 December 2002 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

six years pass...

"Take You On A Cruise" - Interpol
"Any Day Now" - Elbow
"Two Step" - Dave Matthews Band
"Maps" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Moonchild" - M83
"All We Have Is Now" - The Flaming Lips
"Disarm" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Cliquot" - Beirut
"Moya" & "The Dead Flag Blues" - Godspeed You Black Emperor!
"Girls" - Death In Vegas
"Salt" - Mugison
"Dust in the Wind" - Kansas

Turangalila, Friday, 14 August 2009 03:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I feel awful saying this but seriously, that Interpol song is so tiny and mournful, lost in the wind.

Turangalila, Friday, 14 August 2009 03:44 (fourteen years ago) link

forgot this thread! at some point i should also have mentioned Malibu by Hole. i guess Corgan is partially the reason why that stands apart, but then i'm pretty indifferent to most of the Pumpkins stuff too, so there it still is.

Kim, Saturday, 4 September 2010 14:43 (thirteen years ago) link

lol @ "moonchild" by m83. that song has probably the most unintentionally hilarious monologue i've ever heard.

teledyldonix, Saturday, 4 September 2010 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Foreigner-double vision

nakamura, Saturday, 4 September 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll take Foreigner - "I Want to Know What Love Is," and admit a little fondness for "Feels Like the First Time"

Pet Shop Boys - "What Have I Done to Deserve This" (of course, they brought in a ringer I am incapable of hating)

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 4 September 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

dexy's midnight runners - come on eileen
shakermaker - oasis (i had a brief oasis infatuation lasting about a month in which i was impressed by liam's cool charm and raunchy voice; until i stopped listening to them obsessively and finally realized how utterly fucking boring they actually are)

baddest boy on the internet (kelpolaris), Saturday, 4 September 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
Eminem - My Name Is
Radiohead - Just
Coldplay - Yellow
Madonna - Holiday

nicky lo-fi, Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Kraftwerk - Trans Euro Express (this is good but computer music has no soul)

ABBA - Dancing Queen (mindless pop for idiots but this is a guilty pleasure)

Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan (slick studio craftsmanship < raw emotion of real rock and roll)

Sara - Fleetwood Mac (the epitome of empty cocaine fueled narcisissm)

dexy's midnight runners - come on eileen

Really? This is one of the worst Dexy's songs. Have you actually ever listened to Searching for the Young Soul Rebels?

emil.y, Sunday, 5 September 2010 00:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I pretty much dislike the Rolling Stones but I like "Miss You".

optimizing the emotional effects of Redneck Hoe by Insane Clown Posse (corey), Sunday, 5 September 2010 01:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't really really hate him the way i might've when i was younger but i have listened to "dont ask me why" by billy joel like 18 times since that 80s joel poll. in terms of hugest gulf between how i feel about one song by an act vs every other song by that act winner is definitely "boys of summer" by don henley.

balls, Sunday, 5 September 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link

wasn't "malibu" pretty much straight courtney (i remember her mentioning it in an interview w/ stevie nicks like a year or so beforehand)? i thought corgan's fingerprints were all over "celebrity skin"?

i'm gradually growing more and more distant from merriweather-era animal collective. nothing has actually triggered this, but i seem to feel embarrassed whenever i listen to these guys.

WEEZER - EL SCORCHO

I don’t actually hate them but this is the only song by them that makes me want to sing my lungs out, I didn’t love any song by them beforehand but I think I started loving this one by proxy of Allo Darlin’s “kiss your lips” which hijacks the chorus from Scorcho in a really fun way.

Nah, I hadn't heard anything else that made me think listening to one minute more of Seger was a good use of my time. But I'll check it out.
